2024-08-12 Rights Group Sues US for Placing Palestinian American on ‘Illegal, Racist Watchlist’ The largest U.S. Muslim civil rights group on Monday announced it is suing Attorney General Merrick Garland and other federal officials for placing one Palestinian American on its “no-fly” list and for seizing another’s electronic device and interrogating him about his constitutionally protected organizing for a free Palestine.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations and its Los Angeles office (CAIR-LA) are suing Garland, Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Christopher Wray, Terrorism Screening Center Director Michael Glasheen, and other national security officials on behalf of Mustafa Zeidan and Osama Abu Irshaid.

According to the lawsuit, the men “are both United States citizens of Palestinian descent” who have never “been charged or convicted of a violent crime.”

“Yet, recently, the federal government has placed Dr. Abu Irshaid and Mr. Zeidan on a secret list, subjecting one to a humiliating process of detention, questioning, and phone seizure at the border and barring the other from flying altogether,” the filing states. Irshaid is on the terrorism watchlist while Zeidan cannot fly. https://www.commondreams.org/news/cair-lawsuit

2024-02-09 U.S. Intel Contradicts Netanyahu’s Big Claims On Gaza War; ‘Israel Not Close To…’ | Watch      US intelligence officers told members of Congress this week that Israel has degraded Hamas’ combat capabilities, but eliminating the terror group is far away. It said that Israel is yet not close to achieving its war aim of annihilating the Palestinian terror group, according to a New York Times report. The Biden administration has also raised doubts over how realistic Israel’s stated war goal of destroying Hamas was, as per a NYT report citing American officials. 2024-08-16 UNRWA Says There Is ‘Nowhere to Go’ as Israel Orders Evacuation of Gaza Safe Zones      Following a series of evacuation orders this week, Israeli forces issued another on Friday for areas in central and southern Gaza, including “safe zones,” leaving Palestinian families gripped with fear and with “nowhere to go,” according to the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.

Israel’s Arabic spokesperson announced on social media that people in six neighborhood blocks in various towns, several of which were part of a proclaimed humanitarian zone, must “immediately move,” leading to a scramble of evacuations in those areas.

“Once again, fear spreads as families have nowhere to go,” UNRWA wrote on social media. “People remain trapped in an endless nightmare of death and destruction on a staggering scale.”  https://www.commondreams.org/news/gaza-evacuation-unrwa-nowhere-to-go

2024-07-30 Over 200 UNRWA Workers Have Been Killed in Israel’s Genocide   The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), the primary humanitarian aid provider for Palestinians in Gaza, reported a tragic milestone on Tuesday of Israel killing over 200 UNRWA employees in Gaza in the last 10 months.

According to the agency, Israel has killed 202 UNRWA workers in Gaza since it embarked on its genocidal assault in October, some of them killed while providing desperately-needed humanitarian assistance to Palestinians amid the famine and epidemics caused by Israel’s relentless bombardment. Others were killed while at home with their families or seeking a safe place to shelter.    https://truthout.org/articles/over-200-unrwa-workers-have-been-killed-in-israels-genocide/

2024-07-15 Israel Has “Flattened” UNRWA HQ in Gaza in “Blatant” War Crime, Agency Says       After months of successive attacks on humanitarian aid facilities, Israeli forces have now “completely destroyed” the headquarters of the primary aid group for Palestinian refugees in Gaza, the agency reports.

Israeli forces attacked the facility as they carried out their horrific raid of Gaza City last week, leaving nothing but rubble in its place. The building was one of many operated by the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), the largest aid group for Palestinians in Gaza and beyond.

UNRWA Commissioner Philippe Lazzarini said that Israel’s attack on the facility represents a “blatant” war crime.https://truthout.org/articles/israel-has-flattened-unrwa-hq-in-gaza-in-blatant-war-crime-agency-says/

2024-05-25 Italy to resume UNRWA funding as Gaza faces humanitarian crisis    Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani says most of the $38m in funding will be allocated for food in Gaza.   Italy has announced it will restore funding for the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) months after it suspended aid to the agency over Israeli allegations linking UN staff to the deadly October 7 attack.

Rome joins several Western donors in resuming aid after an independent review of UNRWA, led by French former foreign minister Catherine Colonna, found that Israel had not provided any evidence to back its claims. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/5/25/italy-to-resume-unrwa-funding-as-gaza-faces-humanitarian-crisis

2024-05-21 UNRWA says food distribution in Rafah suspended, citing insecurity   The UN agency for Palestinian refugees also cited a lack of supplies as Israel continues closure of border crossings.    The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) says that food distribution in Gaza’s southern city of Rafah has been suspended due to a lack of supplies and insecurity in the densely populated city.

UNRWA said in a statement on X on Tuesday that only seven of its 24 health centres were operational and that it had not received any medical supplies in the past 10 days due to “closures/disruptions” at the Rafah and the Karem Abu Salem – known in Israel as Kerem Shalom – crossings into Gaza.https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/5/21/unrwa-says-food-distribution-in-rafah-suspended-citing-insecurity

2024-04-22 UN Review: No Evidence UNRWA Staff Are Terrorists     Today the UN released its “Independent Review on UNRWA Adherence to the Humanitarian Principle of Neutrality“, which “confirms that the Agency has systems to address allegations of neutrality breaches, including through disciplinary sanctions”, according to the press release.

This review was commissioned by the UN Secretary-General on February 5, after the Israeli government claimed that staff members of the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), the key humanitarian aid organization operating in the Gaza Strip, of participating in “Operation Al Aqsa Flood”, the Hamas-led attack in Israel on October 7, 2023.

Israel timed that accusation to coincide with the preliminary measures issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on January 26, which was clearly an attempt to deflect media attention away from the ICJ’s order for Israel to take steps to comply with its obligations under the 1948 Genocide Convention, ruling that Israel is committing a plausible genocide in Gaza.

The review is separate from an ongoing investigation by the UN Office for Internal Oversight Services into Israel’s allegation that UNRWA employees were involved in the 10/7 attacks.  https://www.jeremyrhammond.com/2024/04/22/un-review-no-evidence-unrwa-staff-are-terrorists/?

2024-04-22 ‘Damning’ Independent Probe Finds Israel Has Yet to Provide Evidence Against UNRWA    The U.S. House on Saturday passed a bill including a prohibition on funding the agency, due to Israel’s unsubstantiated claims that UNRWA employees have terrorism links.

Countries that have continued to suspend their funding of the United Nations’ top relief agency in the occupied Palestinian territories were left with “no room” to justify their decision, said critics on Monday as an independent investigation into Israel’s allegations against the organization revealed Israeli officials have ignored requests to provide evidence to support their claims.

Nearly three months after U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres commissioned the report, Colonna, the former foreign minister of France, said Israel “has yet to provide supporting evidence” of its allegation that “a significant number of UNRWA employees are members of terrorist organizations.”

Colonna’s findings were bolstered by an investigation led by the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law in Sweden, the Chr. Michelsen Institute in Norway, and the Danish Institute for Human Rights, which separately sought evidence from Israel.

“Israeli authorities have to date not provided any supporting evidence nor responded to letters from UNRWA in March, and again in April, requesting the names and supporting evidence that would enable UNRWA to open an investigation,” said the Nordic groups.  https://www.commondreams.org/news/unrwa-2667835600

2024-03-22 Just 22 House Dems Oppose Bill That Bars UNRWA Funding While Giving Billions to Israel    The House of Representatives on Friday approved a sprawling government spending package that prohibits U.S. funding for the United Nations’ Palestinian refugee agency for at least a year and hands Israel billions of dollars in unconditional military assistance, even as the country massacres and starves Gaza civilians.

The 1,012-page legislation passed in a 286-134 vote, with 112 Republicans and just 22 Democrats opposing the bill. All but one of the bill’s Democratic opponents are members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC).

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), the chair of the CPC, said in a statement after voting against the measure that she is “very concerned that this package continues funding for the Netanyahu government with no conditions, while at the same time prohibiting funding” for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA)  https://www.commondreams.org/news/us-house-unrwa-israel

2024-03-22 US Pariah Status Grows as Finland Resumes UNRWA Funding    As the United States doubled down on banning funds for the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, Finland said Friday that it would resume contributions to the lifesaving organization in an implicit rebuke of unsubstantiated Israeli claims—reportedly extracted via torture—that staff members were involved in the October 7 attacks.

UNRWA employees say they were tortured into making false confessions about involvement in Hamas and October 7. The staffers accuse Israeli interrogators of severely beating and waterboarding them, as well as threatening to harm their relatives.

The European Union and nations including Canada, Sweden, Denmark, and Australia subsequently resumed funding for UNRWA, while other contributors including Saudi Arabia increased their donations.   https://www.commondreams.org/news/unrwa-funding-2667580373

2024-03-21 ‘Starvation Caucus’: US Lawmakers Push Spending Bill That Bars Funding for UNRWA     U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders slammed members of Congress who are “happy to cut funding to UNRWA and make it harder to get aid to Palestinians in the midst of this crisis.”

Buried at the end of 1,012 pages of legislative text unveiled early Thursday is a section that says funds appropriated under the bipartisan bill “may not be used for a contribution, grant, or other payment” to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), which Gazans rely on for food and shelter. The U.S. is historically the largest donor to UNRWA.

The proposed freeze would last through March 2025. Many Republican lawmakers are calling for a permanent end to U.S. funding for the agency, which has faced shortfalls since the Biden administration and other Western governments paused donations in late January following Israel’s unsubstantiated claims that UNRWA staffers took part in the Hamas-led October 7 attack on Israel. https://www.commondreams.org/news/starvation-caucus-unrwa

2024-03-18  US State Department Claims It Hasn’t Seen Reports of Israel Torturing UNRWA Staff     Ryan Grim, The Intercept’s Washington, D.C. bureau chief, asked deputy State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel if he believes the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) staff members who say they were tortured by Israeli interrogators into making false confessions about involvement with the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which led the October 7 attacks on Israel. Israeli officials claimed that at least 12 out of UNRWA’s 13,000 staff in Gaza had ties to Hamas and October 7.

“When you originally talked about the allegations against the 12 staff, you have said that UNRWA itself was the one who forwarded those allegations alone. You said you found them credible, but since then UNRWA itself has said that its staff were tortured by Israel in order to get some of those confessions extracted,” said Grim. “Does that change your view of the evidence that was presented by Israel, and if UNRWA was credible enough for you believe the allegations the first time, is UNRWA credible enough when they make an allegation of torture against its staff?”

Patel replied, “I’ve not seen that reporting, Ryan,” adding that “we continue to find the allegations that were laid out a number of months ago to be credible.”   https://www.commondreams.org/news/unrwa

2024-03-17 Van Hollen Says Netanyahu Spreading ‘Flat Out Lies’ About UNRWA     U.S. Senator for Maryland Chris Van Hollen continued his defense of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East and its work in Gaza in an appearance on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday.

“The claim that Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu and others are making that somehow UNRWA is a proxy for Hamas are just flat out lies, that’s a flat out lie,” he told journalist Margaret Brennan.

The U.S. was one of many Western countries that paused funding for UNRWA after the agency announced in January that it had fired 12 staffers over Israeli allegations that they had been involved in Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel. However, some countries including Canada, Sweden, the European Union, and Australia have since restored funding. A report has also emerged that Israel tortured UNRWA staffers into falsely confessing to involvement in the Hamas attack.  https://www.commondreams.org/news/van-hollen-netanyahu-lies-unrwa

2024-03-15 The Democrats’ ‘Aid Package’ Will Accelerate Gaza Genocide      But one point can’t be overemphasized: This bill would have a genocidal effect on Palestinians—or, more precisely, it would accelerate the genocide that is already underway.   And despite their boasts that it provides “humanitarian aid” to Gaza, the bill permanently cuts off all funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), a group other relief agencies describe as “irreplaceable.” That will result in additional civilian deaths.

That’s not rhetorical overkill. In its present form, the bill would provide Israel with $10 billion in additional weaponry and $4 billion in other military support. Although Democrats coyly describe its Israeli aid as “security assistance,” its real purpose is to reload a massive killing machine. Its passage would give Israel a green light to continue the slaughter.   https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/democrats-aid-package-gaza-genocide

2024-03-15 Australia Restores UNRWA Funding as Israel Kills Aid Workers, Starving Gazans   Australia said Friday that it would reinstate funding for the United Nations United Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, which has lost hundreds of millions of dollars in international financing due to unsubstantiated Israeli claims that UNRWA staff participated in the October 7 Hamas-led attacks on Israel.

“The best available current advice from agencies and the Australian government lawyers is that UNRWA is not a terrorist organization,” Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said in Adelaide while announcing a new funding package for the agency, which works to aid Palestinians forcibly displaced during the Nakba, or “catastrophe” through which the modern state of Israel was established in 1948, as well as their descendants.

“The Labor government must publicly pressure Israel to allow aid into all parts of Gaza,” Sen. Mehreen Faruqi of New South Wales and the Australian Greens stressed. “Starvation is a weapon of war, and Israel is blocking aid to reach the people of Gaza in brazen contravention of the [International Court of Justice’s] ruling” ordering Israel to prevent genocidal acts.  https://www.commondreams.org/news/australia-unrwa

2024-03-13 IMEU Policy Analysis #10 | UNRWA: Implications of Cutting Off US Funding      President Biden cut off funding for UNRWA, an agency which has provided basic services to Palestinian refugees for the past 75 years, based on unproven allegations against a small fraction of UNRWA employees which were extracted under torture.

Several bills introduced in the current Congress contemplate permanently cutting off US appropriations to UNRWA in a bid to undermine Palestinian refugees’ status and right to return home.

Any effort to cut off funding to UNRWA either temporarily or permanently will greatly exacerbate the catastrophic humanitarian conditions faced by Palestinians under Israel’s blockade of Gaza, leading to further deprivation, including starvation and dehydration. https://imeu.org/article/imeu-policy-analysis-10-unrwa-implications-of-cutting-off-us-funding

2024-03-09 Canada, Sweden Restore UNRWA Funds as Report Accuses Israel of Torturing Agency Staff     “The work that UNWRA does cannot be overstated,” said Canadian lawmaker Salma Zahid. “It will save lives as we have seen the visuals of children dying of hunger in Gaza. The need for immediate aid is non-negotiable.”  https://www.commondreams.org/news/unrwa-funding-2667469058

2024-03-05 UNRWA Chief Accuses Netanyahu of ‘Concerted Campaign’ to Destroy Aid Agency     The head of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees told the U.N. General Assembly on Monday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his allies are intentionally trying to decimate the critical aid body as mass starvation looms in the Gaza Strip.

“UNRWA is facing a deliberate and concerted campaign to undermine its operations, and ultimately end them,” said Philippe Lazzarini, the agency’s commissioner-general. “Part of this campaign involves inundating donors with misinformation designed to foster distrust and tarnish the reputation of the agency. More blatant, is the Israeli prime minister openly stating that UNRWA will not be part of post-war Gaza.”

“The implementation of this plan is already underway with the destruction of our infrastructure across the Gaza Strip,” he continued. “Attempts to evict UNRWA from its headquarters in East Jerusalem, and from a nearby vocational training center for Palestine refugee youth, are underway. Draft legislation in the Israeli Knesset seeks to prohibit outright any activity by UNRWA on Israeli territory.” https://www.commondreams.org/news/unrwa-chief-netanyahu

2024-03-04 Biden’s Middle East Policy Trades Humanitarian Aid for Endless Warfare    On February 13, the U.S. Senate passed a $95.3 billion supplemental funding package that will fund weapons, war, and militarism in Ukraine, Taiwan, and Israel. The bill would also further entrench the Biden Administration’s cruel and unnecessary decision to cut all funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) by prohibiting humanitarian funds from going to the agency. UNRWA serves almost six million Palestinian refugees and is the main provider of aid in Gaza. Further restrictions on funding could result in a complete collapse of the already restricted humanitarian response and many more preventable deaths.

It is important to place Biden’s actions in a historical context. Weakening and dismantling UNRWA has been a long-standing strategy by successive Israeli administrations. In 2018, the Trump administration cut all funding to UNRWA, brandishing it as “irredeemably flawed,” just a year after Netenyahu had told Nikki Haley, then U.S. Ambassador to the U.N, that UNRWA should be dismantled.https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/unrwa-israel-gaza

2024-02-07 War on Gaza: After Unrwa cuts, congressional staffers organise Gaza fundraiser   After the Biden administration abruptly suspended funding to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (Unrwa), amid congressional calls for that aid to be permanently stopped, a group of appalled staffers on Capitol Hill have taken matters into their own hands.

Rather than following their bosses in Congress or agreeing to the administration’s aid suspension, staffers are organising a fundraiser next week in DC to help raise money for humanitarian assistance in Gaza, as well as for organisations working to free the remaining Israeli hostages in Gaza.    “We feel like we have a responsibility to do more when you see our members and our president and the administration refusing to do so,” an organiser with Congressional Staff for Ceasefire Now said in a phone interview with MEE.

The fundraiser will take place next Thursday. Organisers also plan to create a GoFundMe page and open up their fundraising efforts to the public.   “While we’re obviously not going to be able to raise the millions of dollars, or the billions of dollars, that Congress could appropriate for this aid, we can certainly do our part and make our splash.”   https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/war-gaza-after-cuts-unrwa-congressional-staffers-organise-gaza-fundraiser

2024-02-06 ‘Scandal’: Israeli Dossier ‘Provides No Evidence’ for Claims Against UNRWA Staff     An Israeli dossier that more than a dozen countries have cited to justify cutting off funding to the United Nations’ Palestinian refugee agency “provides no evidence” that a small number of the key U.N. aid body’s employees were involved in the October 7 Hamas-led attack, according to an investigation released Monday by the British outlet Channel 4.

The dossier merely states that “from intelligence information, documents, and identity cards seized during the course of the fighting, it is now possible to flag around 190 Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist operatives who serve as UNRWA employees.”

“More than 10 UNRWA staffers took part in the events of [October 7],” reads the six-page dossier, which Israel provided to UNRWA donor countries—including the agency’s top contributor, the United States—shortly after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) handed down an interim decision ordering Israel to take concrete steps to prevent genocide in the Gaza Strip.  https://www.commondreams.org/news/israel-dossier-unrwa

2024-02-05 Senate Deal Would Block All Funding to UNRWA as Gazans Starve     As the United Nations warned Monday that at least a quarter of civilians in Gaza are suffering from “catastrophic” food insecurity and the collapse of the healthcare system is causing disease to spread, the U.S. Senate doubled down on cutting funding for the U.N.’s top humanitarian agency serving Palestinians by including in a bipartisan package a provision that would block aid for the body.  The proposed $118 billion Emergency National Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, chiefly negotiated by Sens. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.), and James Lankford (R-Okla.) includes $14.1 billion for Israel, which has killed at least 27,468 Palestinians in Gaza and at least 360 in the West Bank since beginning its assault on the occupied territories in October.

But a provision notes that none of the $10 billion in humanitarian assistance for Palestinians and Ukrainians “may be made available for a contribution, grant, or other payment” to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

Just after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) said in an interim ruling late last month that South Africa’s claim that Israel is committing a genocide in Gaza is “plausible,” Israel announced it had discovered that 12 of the agency’s 13,000 employees in Palestine had been involved in the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7.https://www.commondreams.org/news/senate-deal-unrwa

2024-02-02 A New Phase for Gaza: The War on Humanitarian Aid   Israel’s systematic destruction of essential infrastructure has left the people of Gaza largely without food, clean water, and shelter. There is no functional health system. Famine and disease are spreading rapidly among the nearly two million Palestinians displaced from their homes, forced to bear the brunt of winter in densely packed camps. Even if and when the guns go silent, the future for Gaza is devastatingly dark: Israel has also demolished universities, mosques, churches, government buildings, libraries, bakeries, and countless other institutions.

Now, the political fight over humanitarian aid represents a new front in Israel’s war on Palestine.

Last week, the U.S. and at least eight other nations suspended funding to UNRWA, the U.N. agency that serves as the principal aid distributor and shelter provider amid the Israeli-engineered humanitarian crisis. The timing of the decision was unconscionable, coming the day after the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the U.N.’s highest court, issued preliminary measures against Israel requiring that it cease any violations of the Genocide Convention, and ordered Israel to “enable the provision of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian assistance to address the adverse conditions of life faced by Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.” A hollowed-out UNRWA will make that task impossible. By many accounts, the defunding of the U.N. agency represents an act of collective punishment against the Palestinian people.

UNRWA has provided Palestinians with essential humanitarian assistance since 1949, when the U.N. General Assembly tasked it with supporting a refugee population of 700,000 who were expelled by Israeli forces. Those numbers now exceed five million.    https://prospect.org/world/2024-02-02-new-phase-gaza-war-on-humanitarian-aid/

2024-02-02 ‘We Will Shut down by End of February’ – UNRWA Warns against Suspension of Funding     The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has warned that it would “most likely” be forced to shut down its operations in the besieged Gaza Strip as well as across the region by the end of February if funding remains suspended.

Several Western countries, including the US, Canada, and France have suspended funding worth $440 million to the UN relief agency after Israel alleged some of its employees were involved in the October 7 operation carried out by the Palestinian Resistance.  UNRWA terminated the contracts of the staff members concerned, asking for an independent investigation.

UNRWA is the largest humanitarian organization in Gaza. Of its 13,000 staff, more than 3,000 continue working, they are the backbone of the humanitarian aid operations, the statement said.  “As the war in Gaza is being pursued unabated, and at the time the International Court of Justice calls for more humanitarian assistance, it is the time to reinforce and not to weaken UNRWA,” said UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini.   “The Agency remains the largest aid organization in one of the most severe and complex humanitarian crises in the world,” he stressed.

Lazzarini further said, “I echo the call of the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to resume funding to UNRWA. If the funding remains suspended, we will most likely be forced to shut down our operations by end of February not only in Gaza but also across the region.”   The colossal humanitarian needs of over 2 million people in Gaza now face the risk of deepening following the decision of 16 donor countries to stop financial support to UNRWA, the statement said.   https://www.palestinechronicle.com/we-will-shut-down-by-end-of-february-unrwa-warns-against-suspension-of-funding/

2024-01-31 Defunding UNRWA aimed at starving Palestinians to death and completing Israel’s plans for ethnic cleansing   The US immediately suspended all funding to UNRWA. Washington was followed by 10 other states, including Germany, the UK and France.   Some 21 international aid agencies, including Save the Children, ActionAid, Oxfam and the Danish Refugee Council, wrote that they were “deeply concerned and outraged” at the decision taken “amid a rapidly worsening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.”  Without blinking an eye, Israel and its allies have now signed a death warrant for tens of thousands more.

Death by starvation is the clear intent of Israel and all of its backers, no matter what cynical statements to the contrary they may occasionally make. All of the imperialist powers have unwaveringly defended Israel’s supposed “right to defend itself,” as its armed forces slaughtered around 30,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, wounded 65,000 others, razed more than half Gaza’s essential infrastructure to the ground and left 1.9 million people (85 percent of its population) internally displaced.  https://countercurrents.org/2024/01/defunding-unrwa-aimed-at-starving-palestinians-to-death-and-completing-israels-plans-for-ethnic-cleansing/

2024-01-31 By Hurting UN Agency, the West Sides With Genocide   Israel has long plotted the downfall of UNRWA, aware that it is one of the biggest obstacles to eradicating the Palestinians as a people, writes Jonathan Cook.

There is an important background to the decision by the United States and other leading Western states, the U.K. among them, to freeze funding to the United Nations’ Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), the main channel by which the U.N. disseminates food and welfare services to the most desperate and destitute Palestinians.  The World Court judges quoted at length U.N. officials who warned that Israel’s actions had left almost all of the enclave’s 2.3 million inhabitants on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe, including famine.

The funding cut — which has been also adopted by Germany, France, Japan, Switzerland, Canada, Netherlands, Italy, Australia and Finland — was imposed even though the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled on Friday that Israel may be committing genocide in Gaza.

The West’s flimsy pretext for what amounts to a war on UNRWA is that Israel claims 12 local U.N. staff — out of 13,000 — are implicated in Hamas’ break-out from the open-air prison of Gaza on Oct. 7. The sole evidence appears to be coerced confessions, likely extracted through torture, from Palestinian fighters captured by Israel that day. https://consortiumnews.com/2024/01/31/by-hurting-un-agency-the-west-sides-with-genocide/

2024-01-30 Amnesty Says Cutting Off Aid to UNRWA While Arming Israel Is ‘Stark’ Hypocrisy    Amnesty International on Monday joined the growing global chorus denouncing Israel’s allies for suspending aid to the United Nations’ Palestinian refugee agency even as they continue to support the Israeli military’s war on the Gaza Strip, risking complicity in genocide.

Agnès Callamard, Amnesty’s secretary-general and the former U.N. special rapporteur on extrajudicial killings, said that while Israel’s claim that a dozen staffers at the refugee agency played a role Hamas’ October 7 attack is “serious and must be independently investigated,” the “alleged actions of a few individuals must not be used as a pretext for cutting off lifesaving assistance in what could amount to collective punishment.”

“Some of the very governments that announced they will cut off funds to UNRWA over these allegations have, in the meantime, continued to arm Israeli forces despite overwhelming evidence that these arms are used to commit war crimes and serious human rights violations,” said Callamard. “Rushing to freeze funds for humanitarian aid, based on allegations that are still being investigated, while refusing to even consider suspending support for the Israeli military is a stark example of double standards.”  “Instead of suspending vital funding to those in need,” Callamard added, “states should be working to halt arms transfers to Israel and Palestinian armed groups and pushing for an immediate and sustained cease-fire and full humanitarian access to help alleviate devastating suffering.”

The United States announced last week that it would temporarily cut off UNRWA funding as it reviews Israel’s allegations against the low-level agency employees—a decision that came just hours after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Israel must ensure the provision of humanitarian aid to Gazans, tens of thousands of whom have been killed or wounded by Israeli bombs and shells in less than four months.    Francesca Albanese, the U.N. special rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territories, said that “defunding UNRWA at this critical time overtly defies” the ICJ’s ruling. https://www.commondreams.org/news/amnesty-unrwa-gaza

2024-01-29    20+ NGOs Condemn ‘Reckless’ Decision to Cut Off UNRWA Aid    More than 20 humanitarian aid organizations on Monday condemned the decision by the United States and a growing list of nations to suspend funding for the United Nations agency that provides vital services to Palestinians suffering through a genocidal Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip.

Following Israeli claims—reportedly extracted from Palestinian prisoners in an interrogation regime rife with torture and abuse—that 12 of the more than 13,000 United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) workers in Gaza were involved in the October 7 Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel, the United States and nine other nations cut off funding to the largest humanitarian aid organization operating in the besieged coastal enclave.

UNRWA has fired several employees in the wake of the Israeli allegations, while the U.N. Office of Internal Oversight Services, the world body’s highest investigative authority, has launched a probe of the matter.    “We welcome UNRWA’s swift investigation into the alleged involvement of a small number of U.N. staff members in the October 7 attacks. We are shocked by the reckless decision to cut a lifeline for an entire population by some of the very countries that had called for aid in Gaza to be stepped up and for humanitarians to be protected while doing their job,” the 21 NGOs said in a statement.

According to UNRWA chief Phillipe Lazzarini, more than 2 million of Gaza’s 2.3 million people depend upon UNRWA for their “sheer survival.” With more than 90% of Gazans displaced by Israel’s bombardment and invasion, over 1 million Palestinians are living in UNRWA-run shelters. As Gaza teeters on the brink of famine and hundreds of thousands of its residents suffer infectious diseases, the agency is providing critical food, medicine, and healthcare. It also runs hundreds of schools in the strip.   All this while working under relentless Israeli bombardment that’s sometimes targeted UNRWA convoys, schools, shelters, and other facilities. The agency says at least 152 of its employees have been killed by Israeli bombs and bullets since October 7. Overall, more than 26,600 Palestinians have been killed and over 65,300 others wounded during Israel’s 115-day onslaught, according to Gaza officials. Most of these casualties have been women and children.  https://www.commondreams.org/news/unrwa-funding-2667115244

2024-01-29 Ocasio-Cortez: US Should Restore UNRWA Funding ‘Immediately’       “Cutting off support to UNRWA—the primary source of humanitarian aid to 2 million+ Gazans—is unacceptable,” Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) wrote on social media. “Among an organization of 13,000 U.N. aid workers, risking the starvation of millions over grave allegations of 12 is indefensible. The U.S. should restore aid immediately.”

The U.S. State Department announced last week that it would temporarily pause any additional funding for the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East as it reviews Israel’s allegations that a dozen of the agency’s employees were involved in Hamas’ October 7 attack on southern Israel.   Several countries have followed the U.S. in suspending aid to the UNRWA, including Germany, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Japan, putting the agency’s critical operations in Gaza at risk of total collapse.

Observers noted that the U.S. and other Israel allies were quick to suspend aid to the UNRWA but have refused to cut off military assistance to the Israeli government despite the overwhelming evidence that it is committing war crimes in Gaza.  https://www.commondreams.org/news/ocasio-cortez-unrwa

United Nations Security Council

United Nations Security Council

Updated 2024-07-30

2024-06-10 ‘Glimmer of Hope’ as UN Security Council Approves Gaza Cease-Fire Resolution   In a move that boosts the three-phase plan announced by President Joe Biden late last month, the United Nations Security Council on Monday voted 14-0—with permanent member Russia abstaining—in favor of a U.S.-sponsored resolution for a cease-fire in Gaza.   Russia chose not to exercise its power to veto the resolution, which urges Israel and Hamas to “fully implement its terms without delay and without condition.”

Responding to the vote, Nihad Awad, national executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said in a statement that “although the Biden administration should have allowed the U.N. Security Council to pass a permanent cease-fire resolution many months and many slaughtered Palestinians ago, we welcome today’s development as a positive and long overdue step toward ending the genocide.”

“The Biden administration must now use American leverage to force [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu to agree to a permanent cease-fire so that the massacres of Palestinian civilians can end, all hostages and political prisoners can safely go free, international tribunals can begin holding those responsible for war crimes accountable, and the world can finally begin pursuing a credible end to the illegal occupation of Palestine that has fomented decades of injustice and oppression.”https://www.commondreams.org/news/cease-fire-resolution-passes

2024-03-25 US Abstains as UN Security Council Demands ‘Immediate Cease-Fire’ in Gaza       “This resolution must be implemented,” said U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres. “Failure would be unforgivable.”

The U.S. on Monday declined to veto but still abstained from a United Nations Security Council on Monday to adopt a resolution demanding an “immediate cease-fire for the month of Ramadan” in the embattled Gaza Strip, a move that came amid an ongoing Israeli genocide in which more than 114,000 Palestinians have been killed or wounded and hundreds of thousands of others are starving.

The Security Council voted 14-0, with the U.S. abstaining, to approve a resolution for the cessation of hostilities during the Muslim holy month after member states overcame a sticking point over the removal of the word “permanent” from an earlier draft version. Instead, the resolution calls for an “immediate” cease-fire.

“Humanity prevails. Humanity always prevails,” Palestine’s U.N. mission said on social media following the vote. “Today’s historic vote by the Security Council for a #ceasefire and an end to Israel’s crimes is a first step towards justice. The resolution is binding.”    https://www.commondreams.org/news/u-n-cease-fire-resolution?

2024-03-25 UN Security Council passes resolution calling for Gaza ceasefire The UN Security Council has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, after the US did not veto the measure in a shift from its previous position.  It also demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.  It is the first time the council has called for a ceasefire since the war began in October after several failed attempts.    The move by the US signals growing divergence between it and its ally Israel over Israel’s offensive in Gaza.   https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-68658415?

2024-03-11 UN Chief Warns Rafah Invasion Would Plunge Gazans Into ‘Even Deeper Circle of Hell’   United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres marked the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan on Monday by reiterating his call for an end to Israel’s war on Gaza and warning against a ground invasion of Rafah, a small city near the Egyptian border in which more than 1.5 million people are sheltering.

“My strongest appeal today is to honor the spirit of Ramadan by silencing the guns—and removing all obstacles to ensure the delivery of lifesaving aid at the speed and massive scale required,” said Guterres. “At the same time—and in the Ramadan spirit of compassion—I call for the immediate release of all hostages.”

The U.N. chief described the level of death and destruction that the Israeli military has inflicted on Gaza since October as unprecedented during his seven-year tenure as secretary-general. Most of the territory’s population is displaced, over 60% of housing has been destroyed or damaged, and at least 21 children have died of malnutrition and dehydration.   https://www.commondreams.org/news/guterres-rafah-invasion

2024-02-07 UN chief warns of ‘age of chaos’ as Security Council stays divided on Gaza     UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that the world is entering into an “age of chaos” as the UN Security Council remains sharply divided over Israel’s war on Gaza.

Guterres said he was “especially alarmed” after Israel said last week that it intends to focus its military assault in Gaza on the southern city of Rafah, where more than a million people have sought shelter.   “Such an action would exponentially increase what is already a humanitarian nightmare with untold regional consequences,” he told the UN General Assembly on Wednesday.   “It is time for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and the unconditional release of all hostages,” he added.  https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/2/7/un-chief-warns-of-age-of-chaos-as-security-council-stays-divided-on-gaza

2024-02-03 ‘Destruction and Chaos’ – Russia Condemns US Aggression on Middle East, Calls for UNSC Meeting   The United States has “once again demonstrated its aggressive essence and disregard for international law,” Maria Zakharova, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, said in a statement, adding that the attack led to the destruction of civilian infrastructure and casualties among ordinary people.    “The obedient participation of the British Royal Air Force in the US attacks should not create the illusion of some kind of ‘international coalition’ for anyone,” Zakharova said.   “We strongly condemn the new blatant act of American-British aggression against sovereign states. We are seeking urgent consideration of the current situation through the UN Security Council,” the ministry’s spokeswoman added.   https://www.palestinechronicle.com/destruction-and-chaos-russia-condemns-us-aggression-on-middle-east-calls-for-unsc-meeting/

Updated 2024-02-26

2024-01-30 Turning War Rhetoric on Its Head From Ukraine to Gaza     These are different wars under different circumstances, but they share a similar fate: each is caught in a recurring cycle of violence, a continuous loop without a terminating condition and with the potential of escalation.   Two wars are burning intensely before our eyes, each engaging the U.S. as an ally, arms supplier, and global power. The war in Gaza has drawn attention away from the war in Ukraine momentarily, but we have witnessed in both places the appalling loss of life and staggering destruction in cities large and small.    https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/ukraine-gaza-war-rhetoric

Project Nimbus

Project Nimbus

Updated 2024-02-26

Project Nimbus -Wilipedia     A cloud computing project of the Israeli government and its military. The Israeli Finance Ministry announced April 2021, that the contract is to provide “the government, the defense establishment, and others with an all-encompassing cloud solution.” Under the contract, the companies will establish local cloud sites that will “keep information within Israel’s borders under strict security guidelines.

The contract has drawn rebuke and condemnation from the companies’ shareholders as well as their employees, over concerns that the project will lead to further abuses of Palestinians’ human rights in the context of the ongoing occupation and the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. Specifically, they voice concern over how the technology will enable further surveillance of Palestinians and unlawful data collection on them as well as facilitate the expansion of Israel’s illegal settlements on Palestinian land.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Nimbus

2024-01-19 Companies across tech have powered the current genocide of Palestinians in Gaza    Over the last 100+ days, Israel has escalated its assault on Gaza in what’s being called the first AI-facilitated genocide in human history. @amazon @google & companies across tech have powered the current genocide of Palestinians in Gaza & the surveillance & oppression of Paletinians across historic Palestine for years, revving up Israel’s genocide machine that has led to the murder of 32K+ Palestinians, according to @euromedhr.

Last November, a @972mag investigation revealed the Israeli military’s use of a new AI-based system called Habsora (“The Gospel”) to automatically generate bombing targets & kill Palestinians in Gaza at an unprecedented rate.   Google & Amazon are also providing powerful AI tech to the Israeli military through the $1B Project Nimbus contract, which was signed while Israel dropped bombs on Gaza during its May 2021 assault.

In 2022, a @theintercept investigation confirmed @Google is offering advanced AI & machine-learning capabilities to Israel via Nimbus. The docs indicate that the new cloud would include facial detection tech & even sentiment analysis that claims to “assess the emotional content of pictures, speech & writing” to Israel. Any of these capabilities supercharge Israel’s ability to surveil Palestinians & collect/process data on Palestinians—key strategies of the Israeli occupation.   https://www.instagram.com/p/C2S3m5uOq8C/?img_index=1

2022-07-24 DOCUMENTS REVEAL ADVANCED AI TOOLS GOOGLE IS SELLING TO ISRAEL     The Intercept confirm that Google is offering advanced artificial intelligence and machine-learning capabilities to the Israeli government through its controversial “Project Nimbus” contract. The Israeli Finance Ministry announced the contract in April 2021 for a $1.2 billion cloud computing system jointly built by Google and Amazon.

In 2021, both Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International formally accused Israel of committing crimes against humanity by maintaining an apartheid system against Palestinians. While the Israeli military and security services already rely on a sophisticated system of computerized surveillance, the sophistication of Google’s data analysis offerings could worsen the increasingly data-driven military occupation.   https://theintercept.com/2022/07/24/google-israel-artificial-intelligence-project-nimbus/

2021-10-21 We are Google and Amazon workers. We condemn Project Nimbus    We cannot support our employer’s decision to supply the Israeli military and government technology that is used to harm Palestinians https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/oct/12/google-amazon-workers-condemn-project-nimbus-israeli-military-contract

Pelosi, Nancy

Pelosi, Nancy

Updated 2024-07-30

2024-04-23 Student ‘forcibly thrown out’ of Nancy Pelosi event in Dublin over ‘Zionist warmonger’ comments     n Irish student has been “thrown out” of a Nancy Pelosi event in Dublin. Martha Ní Riada, President of the Students’ Union at University College Dublin (UCD), expressed her outrage after being “forcibly removed” from the ceremony.

The former speaker of US House of Representatives was in the Irish capital on Monday to receive the Fulbright Commission’s public service award and an award in memory of former attorney general Peter Sutherland at UCD.

“Why does UCD continue to platform Zionist warmongers whilst silencing students?” Sharing images of her arms, which are visibly red after the encounter, Martha continued: “The two individuals who forcibly removed me from the room, unlawfully without any verbal warning, were @gardainfo supported by UCD security.

“Disturbing for this to occur at a @ucddublin event, student safety clearly not a concern.”  Martha’s tweet received over 10,000 reactions on the social media platform including from Ruth Coppinger, a Socialist Party member in Ireland who was elected as a Teachta Dála for the Dublin West constituency in 2014.

Coppinger said: “What a cheek these men had manhandling / assaulting the elected president of @UCDSU just for verbally interrupting genocide enabler Nancy Pelosi, disgracefully given a doctorate at @ucddublin.”   https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/student-forcibly-thrown-out-of-nancy-pelosi-event-in-dublin-over-zionist-warmonger-comments/ar-AA1nw2ul?

2024-02-16 Pelosi, Biden, and the Spectacular Solipsism of Our Nation’s Political Leaders   Her recent outburst against opponents of Israel’s ongoing devastation of Gaza that has followed upon Hamas’s October assault left no doubt that—for better or worse, she’s still at it. What particularly raised eyebrows was her call for an FBI investigation into whether the people disrupting President Joe Biden’s speaking engagements by shouting out demands to support a Gaza ceasefire were funded by Russia. To wit: “What we have to do is try to stop the suffering in Gaza … But for them to call for a ceasefire is Mr. Putin’s message.”

Putin’s message is it? This is a spectacular level of obliviousness—for anyone, really, much less for someone who within the past two years ranked second in order of succession to the presidency of the United States.    December 12, 2023 United Nations General Assembly vote calling for an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire” in the Israel-Hamas war, and in particular the 153–10 margin (with 23 abstentions) of its passage. So, were those153 countries delivering Putin’s message?  NATO is currently reckoned as an explicitly anti-Putin alliance. So what to make of the fact that NATO’s member states backed the ceasefire resolution by a 20-2 margin (and 9 abstentions), with only the Czech Republic joining the U.S. in opposition? Is NATO too dominated by nations intent on delivering Putin’s message?    https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/pelosi-biden-gaza-war

2024-02-14 Covert Action Bulletin – Nancy Pelosi: Funding Israel, Betraying Workers    ancy Pelosi’s been in office for 37 years. She’s an ardent supporter of capitalism and imperialism, telling a college student who asked her in 2017 that “I have to say, we’re capitalist—and that’s just the way it is” at a time when 51% of 18-29 year olds said they didn’t support capitalism. She was part of the push on Obama to bomb Syria in 2013, she’s a hawk on Iran and she’s said that U.S. support for Israel is “ironclad.”

More recently, she’s suggested that protesters calling for a ceasefire in Palestine are plants or tools of Russia, saying “for them to call for a ceasefire is Mr. Putin’s message” and “Make no mistakes, this is directly connected to what he would like to see.”   And in October, she told members of the peace group CODEPINK to “go back to China.”

We are joined today by Medea Benjamin, a co-founder of CODEPINK, to dig deeper into Pelosi’s politics, money and support for genocide.     https://covertactionmagazine.com/2024/02/14/covertaction-bulletin-nancy-pelosi-funding-israel-betraying-workers/

Palestinians Deported to Israel

Palestinians Deported to Israel

Updated 2024-02-26

2024-02-15 Biden decision, no extradition for Palestinian immigrants  On Wednesday, President Biden signed an executive order directing U.S. immigration officials to avoid deporting the majority of Palestinian immigrants, citing the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas as too risky for deportations.  https://essanews.com/biden-decision-no-extradition-for-palestinian-immigrants,6996014465751680a

2024-02-06  The U.S. Deported A Palestinian To Gaza — And He Was Killed A Few Months Later     “It is incredibly ironic and frustrating how the U.S. government detained him for two years and then funded and armed his killing,” Motaz Alhelou’s former lawyer said.  Motaz Alhelou, a 31-year-old Palestinian who was held in U.S. detention for a year and deported to Gaza, was killed in December.

Alhelou was sheltering at the family’s business in western Gaza City when he was struck by sniper crossfire, his brother Mohammed Alhelou told HuffPost. It is unclear who shot him.   https://www.huffpost.com/entry/palestinian-motaz-alhelou-killed-after-us-release_n_65bd3775e4b05c8779f915ed?syr

Palestinian Right to Self-Defense

Palestinian Right to Self-Defense

Updated 2024-07-30

2024-04-20 The Palestinians Are the Latest Victims of Empire to Be Dehumanized as ‘Others’     Throughout history, military empires have reduced their victims, their subjugated, and their abducted to a state of “The Others.” The political and mass media institutions usually follow suit by supporting their empire’s predatory policies with slanted coverage.  Such is the case with the U.S. global and the Israeli regional empires. The U.S. federal government and the mainstream media often move in lockstep.

Apart from a massively greater overall civilian toll inflicted on Palestinians in Gaza—the vast undercount stands at 34,000 Palestinian deaths compared to the deaths of 1,139 Israeli civilians, soldiers, and foreign workers. This staggering ratio—over 14,000 Palestinian children (with many thousands under the rubble) compared to 30 Israeli children—escapes proper reporting. “The Others” don’t get accurate coverage as was also the case with huge Iraqi losses during the Bush/Cheney criminal war.

How about the application of the right to self-defense? Every state has the right to self-defense. Count the many times you have heard, “Israel has a right to defend itself” compared to “Palestine has a right to defend itself.” Members of Congress who bellow the former declaration daily can not get themselves to say the latter. It is a forbidden phrase. Yet, who is the violently occupying, colonizing, land- and water-stealing party? Israel. For over 50 years, more than 400 times more innocent Palestinians have been killed and injured compared to innocent Israeli civilians. Where is the detailed coverage of the loss of life from enforced destitution and denial of life-saving medicines, equipment, and emergency transport to health facilities? Again, it is “The Others.”

“The Others” are always described with less charitable words. In a meticulous content analysis by The Intercept of the Los Angeles Times, TheNew York Times, and TheWashington Post between October 7 and November 24, the use of the words “slaughtered,” “horrific,” and “massacre” in relation to Israeli and Palestinians killed was 218 to 9!   https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/palestinians-victims-empire-others

2024-02-14 The Injured Gaza Boy and His Drawing: Do Palestinians Have the Right to Self-Defense?     On February 8, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was in Washington on an official visit, aimed at working jointly with the United States to make “sure that Israel has what it needs to defend itself”.  If such a statement was made soon after the Al-Aqsa Flood Operation of October 7, one may cognize its logic, based on the well-known, inherent bias of both Washington and Berlin towards Israel.

The statement and the visit, however, were conducted on the 125th day of one of the bloodiest genocides in modern history.   The purpose of the visit was highlighted in a press conference by White House spokesperson John Kirby, even though, hours later, US President Joe Biden admitted that Israel has gone “over the top” in its response to the Hamas attack on October 7.

Article 51, often used by great powers to justify their wars and military interventions, was designed with a completely different legal spirit in mind.  Article 2 (4) of Chapter I in the UN Charter prohibits the “threat or use of force in international relations.” It also “calls on all Members to respect the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of other states.”   Since Israel is in violation of Article 2 (4), it simply has no right to invoke Article 51.

In November 2012, Palestine was recognized as an Observer State at the UN. It is also a member of countless international treaties, and is recognized by 139 countries out of the 193 UN members.   Even if we accept the argument that the UN Charter only applies to full UN members, the Palestinian right to self-defense can still be established.

In 1960, General Assembly Declaration No. 1594 guaranteed independence to colonized nations and people. Although it did not discuss the right of the colonized to use force, it condemned the use of force against liberation movements.

In 1964, the UNGA voted in favor of Resolution No. 2105, which recognized the legitimacy of the ‘struggle’ of colonized nations to exercise their right to self-determination.

In 1973, the Assembly passed Resolution 38/17 of 1983. The language, this time, was unambiguous; people have the right to struggle against colonial foreign domination by all possible means, including armed struggle.  https://www.palestinechronicle.com/the-injured-gaza-boy-and-his-drawing-do-palestinians-have-the-right-to-self-defense/

Palestinian Right of Return

Palestinian Right of Return

Updated 2024-02-26

2024-02-16 Imperiled Gazans Do Have Somewhere to Go   The place where they can go, writes Sam Husseini, is back to the homes in what is now Israel, from which they were forced out in 1948.

As Professor John Quigley has noted: “  “They are entitled to repatriation under international law, including the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination which Israel has signed and ratified.” (See his writing on this subject here and here.)

And of course there’s U.N. Resolution 194 of Dec. 11, 1948 which  “Resolves that the refugees wishing to return to their homes and live at peace with their neighbours should be permitted to do so at the earliest practicable date, and that compensation should be paid for the property of those choosing not to return…”

The extremely pro-Israel U.S. president, Harry Truman, would state the following year that if   “Israel continues to reject the basic principles set forth” in that U.N. resolution, the U.S. government “will regretfully be forced to the conclusion that a revision of its attitude toward Israel has become unavoidable.”

U.N. mediator Count Folke Bernadotte would report on Sept. 18, 1948:   “It would be an offence against the principles of elemental justice if these innocent victims of the conflict were denied the right to return to their homes, while Jewish immigrants flow into Palestine, and, indeed, at least offer the threat of permanent replacement of the Arab refugees, who have been rooted in the land for centuries.”

The prospect of Palestinians going back to their homes continues to bring out the most murderous impulses in Israeli officials. AntiWar.com reports:  “Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir said on Sunday that Israeli forces should shoot Palestinian women and children in Gaza if they get too close to the Israeli border. … ‘We cannot have women and children getting close to the border… anyone who gets near must get a bullet [in his head],’ Ben-Gvir said

Indeed, in 2018 the “Great March of Return” began, as Palestinians in Gaza tried to simply walk back to their homes.  More than 215 Palestinian civilians, including more than 40 children, were killed during those demonstrations, and thousands more wounded by live fire during those protests between March 2018 and December 2019.  A UN commission of inquiry found that Israel’s use of lethal force against protesters warrants criminal investigation and prosecution and may amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity.  https://consortiumnews.com/2024/02/16/imperiled-gazans-do-have-somewhere-to-go/

Palestinian Prisoner Abuse

Palestinian Prisoner Abuse

Palestinian Prisoner Abuse

The Reason Why  – Documentary      When prejudice is on trial, justice is not always served.   Suleiman El-Abid was sentenced to 27 years in jail for the rape and murder of Israeli teenager Hanit Kikos, based on an unrecorded confession. A few days after re-enacting the crime, he retracted his confession and has been claiming innocence ever since. Did he receive a fair trial or did the justice system incriminate him to whitewash their own failures? Almost three decades later, the mystery surrounding the case endures.  https://www.journeyman.tv/film/8223

2024-08-27   Palestinian Healthcare Workers Chained, Starved, Sexually Abused: New HRW Report on Israeli Prisons   We speak with Human Rights Watch researcher Milena Ansari about the organization’s new report detailing the torture of Palestinian medical workers in Israeli prisons. HRW spoke with eight doctors, paramedics and nurses who were picked up in Gaza before being transferred to the notorious Sde Teiman camp and other facilities, where they say they suffered beatings, starvation, humiliation, electric shocks and other forms of abuse. The men also describe threats of sexual violence during brutal interrogations and seeing another prisoner bleeding after being gang-raped with an M16 rifle by three soldiers. The findings track with other reports from researchers and survivors, and HRW has called on the International Criminal Court to investigate Israel for its attacks on healthcare workers. “We’re really ringing the alarm about the situation inside the Israeli custody and detention facilities,” says Ansari, who says evidence is mounting of a “systematic pattern of ill-treatment and abuse.”   https://www.democracynow.org/2024/8/27/hrw_report

2024-02-02 Released Palestinian prisoners tell horrific stories of brutal torture in Israeli jails    Testimonies by Palestinian prisoners recently released from Israeli occupation prisons revealed a number of violations and practices of torture being committed against them in detention.   Israeli occupation authorities have recently released 114 Gazan prisoners and returned them to the Gaza Strip through Karm Abu Salem crossing in the southern tip of the enclave.  Released prisoners narrated details of cruel torture they encountered inside Israeli prisons, as signs of torture and beatings were so obvious on their bodies and skins.

Speaking to Aljazeera, the elderly Mahmoud Al-Nabulsi said, “The IOF stormed my house in Al-Amal neighborhood in Khan Yunis. I told them I was sick and could not move, but they arrested me any way and put me inside a demolished house before being transferred to Israeli detention centers. I spent ten days in prison. We were beaten and tortured every day. I had never seen this torture in my life. They carried out the worst violations against us.”

“If I had stayed in prison for two more days, I would have lost my life. They kept asking me about Hamas’s tunnels and Israeli captives. I told them I did not know anything. I am 70 years old,” Al-Nabulsi added.   “We were deprived of drinking water for 4 days. They were pouring water on the ground in front of us while we were thirsty,” he said.

The released prisoner Nidal Mansour said while lying on his back in hospital that he was arrested with others after the IOF destroyed his house in Sheikh Radwan neighborhood north of Gaza City in mid-November. There are hundreds of other prisoners who are still held in detention camps inside and around the Gaza Strip and subjected to the most severe forms of torture by the IOF, he added.

In one testimony from Khaled Al-Nabris from Khan Yunis, he said, “When we evacuated Khan Yunis and passed the checkpoint, I was kidnapped by Israeli troops who took me along with others to prisons where we were subjected to severe torture. We were forced to use wet blankets under extreme cold with no water to drink.”   “The IOF transferred us to another place. There, we were subjected to a new kind of torture as we witnessed a different kind of torture in each place we were taken to. The officer hit me on the head, and when I complained, he would hit me more. I could not sleep because of the cold. Besides physical torture, we went through a process of psychological insults and humiliation.”  Al-Nabris pointed out that “There are minors who were terrified of the torture practices inside prisons as they were subjected to increased doses of torture and get attacked by dogs while asleep.”

Detainees from Gaza are subjected to enforced disappearance as the IOF refuses to disclose their names or places of detention and prevents any party from contacting them.  The exact number of detainees from Gaza is still unknown, while some estimates indicate thousands of detainees are being held amid the continuation of daily arrests.    https://english.palinfo.com/news/2024/02/02/313727/
