2024-06-10 ‘Glimmer of Hope’ as UN Security Council Approves Gaza Cease-Fire Resolution   In a move that boosts the three-phase plan announced by President Joe Biden late last month, the United Nations Security Council on Monday voted 14-0—with permanent member Russia abstaining—in favor of a U.S.-sponsored resolution for a cease-fire in Gaza.   Russia chose not to exercise its power to veto the resolution, which urges Israel and Hamas to “fully implement its terms without delay and without condition.”

Responding to the vote, Nihad Awad, national executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said in a statement that “although the Biden administration should have allowed the U.N. Security Council to pass a permanent cease-fire resolution many months and many slaughtered Palestinians ago, we welcome today’s development as a positive and long overdue step toward ending the genocide.”

2024-03-25 US Abstains as UN Security Council Demands ‘Immediate Cease-Fire’ in Gaza       “This resolution must be implemented,” said U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres. “Failure would be unforgivable.”   

 The U.S. on Monday declined to veto but still abstained from a United Nations Security Council on Monday to adopt a resolution demanding an “immediate cease-fire for the month of Ramadan” in the embattled Gaza Strip, a move that came amid an ongoing Israeli genocide in which more than 114,000 Palestinians have been killed or wounded and hundreds of thousands of others are starving.

The Security Council voted 14-0, with the U.S. abstaining, to approve a resolution for the cessation of hostilities during the Muslim holy month after member states overcame a sticking point over the removal of the word “permanent” from an earlier draft version. Instead, the resolution calls for an “immediate” cease-fire.

“Humanity prevails. Humanity always prevails,” Palestine’s U.N. mission said on social media following the vote. “Today’s historic vote by the Security Council for a #ceasefire and an end to Israel’s crimes is a first step towards justice. 2024-03-11 UN Chief Warns Rafah Invasion Would Plunge Gazans Into ‘Even Deeper Circle of Hell’   United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres marked the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan on Monday by reiterating his call for an end to Israel’s war on Gaza and warning against a ground invasion of Rafah, a small city near the Egyptian border in which more than 1.5 million people are sheltering.

“My strongest appeal today is to honor the spirit of Ramadan by silencing the guns—and removing all obstacles to ensure the delivery of lifesaving aid at the speed and massive scale required,” said Guterres. “At the same time—and in the Ramadan spirit of compassion—I call for the immediate release of all hostages.”

The U.N. chief described the level of death and destruction that the Israeli military has inflicted on Gaza since October as unprecedented during his seven-year tenure as secretary-general. 2024-02-07 UN chief warns of ‘age of chaos’ as Security Council stays divided on Gaza     UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that the world is entering into an “age of chaos” as the UN Security Council remains sharply divided over Israel’s war on Gaza.

2024-02-03 ‘Destruction and Chaos’ – Russia Condemns US Aggression on Middle East, Calls for UNSC Meeting   The United States has “once again demonstrated its aggressive essence and disregard for international law,” Maria Zakharova, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, said in a statement, adding that the attack led to the destruction of civilian infrastructure and casualties among ordinary people.    “The obedient participation of the British Royal Air Force in the US attacks should not create the illusion of some kind of ‘international coalition’ for anyone,” Zakharova said.   “We strongly condemn the new blatant act of American-British aggression against sovereign states. Project Nimbus -Wilipedia     A cloud computing project of the Israeli government and its military. The Israeli Finance Ministry announced April 2021, that the contract is to provide “the government, the defense establishment, and others with an all-encompassing cloud solution.” Under the contract, the companies will establish local cloud sites that will “keep information within Israel’s borders under strict security guidelines.   

The contract has drawn rebuke and condemnation from the companies’ shareholders as well as their employees, over concerns that the project will lead to further abuses of Palestinians’ human rights in the context of the ongoing occupation and the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. 2022-07-24 DOCUMENTS REVEAL ADVANCED AI TOOLS GOOGLE IS SELLING TO ISRAEL     The Intercept confirm that Google is offering advanced artificial intelligence and machine-learning capabilities to the Israeli government through its controversial “Project Nimbus” contract. The Israeli Finance Ministry announced the contract in April 2021 for a $1.2 billion cloud computing system jointly built by Google and Amazon.  

In 2021, both Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International formally accused Israel of committing crimes against humanity by maintaining an apartheid system against Palestinians. 2024-02-16 Pelosi, Biden, and the Spectacular Solipsism of Our Nation’s Political Leaders   Her recent outburst against opponents of Israel’s ongoing devastation of Gaza that has followed upon Hamas’s October assault left no doubt that—for better or worse, she’s still at it. What particularly raised eyebrows was her call for an FBI investigation into whether the people disrupting President Joe Biden’s speaking engagements by shouting out demands to support a Gaza ceasefire were funded by Russia. To wit: “What we have to do is try to stop the suffering in Gaza … But for them to call for a ceasefire is Mr. Putin’s message.”

Putin’s message is it? This is a spectacular level of obliviousness—for anyone, really, much less for someone who within the past two years ranked second in order of succession to the presidency of the United States.    December 12, 2023 United Nations General Assembly vote calling for an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire” in the Israel-Hamas war, and in particular the 153–10 margin (with 23 abstentions) of its passage. So, were those153 countries delivering Putin’s message?  NATO is currently reckoned as an explicitly anti-Putin alliance. So what to make of the fact that NATO’s member states backed the ceasefire resolution by a 20-2 margin (and 9 abstentions), with only the Czech Republic joining the U.S. in opposition? 2024-02-14 Covert Action Bulletin – Nancy Pelosi: Funding Israel, Betraying Workers    ancy Pelosi’s been in office for 37 years. She’s an ardent supporter of capitalism and imperialism, telling a college student who asked her in 2017 that “I have to say, we’re capitalist—and that’s just the way it is” at a time when 51% of 18-29 year olds said they didn’t support capitalism. She was part of the push on Obama to bomb Syria in 2013, she’s a hawk on Iran and she’s said that U.S. support for Israel is “ironclad.”

More recently, she’s suggested that protesters calling for a ceasefire in Palestine are plants or tools of Russia, saying “for them to call for a ceasefire is Mr. Putin’s message” and “Make no mistakes, this is directly connected to what he would like to see.”   And in October, she told members of the peace group CODEPINK to “go back to China.”

2024-02-06  The U.S. Deported A Palestinian To Gaza — And He Was Killed A Few Months Later     “It is incredibly ironic and frustrating how the U.S. government detained him for two years and then funded and armed his killing,” Motaz Alhelou’s former lawyer said.  Motaz Alhelou, a 31-year-old Palestinian who was held in U.S. detention for a year and deported to Gaza, was killed in December.

Palestinian Right to Self-Defense

2024-04-20 The Palestinians Are the Latest Victims of Empire to Be Dehumanized as ‘Others’     Throughout history, military empires have reduced their victims, their subjugated, and their abducted to a state of “The Others.” The political and mass media institutions usually follow suit by supporting their empire’s predatory policies with slanted coverage.  Such is the case with the U.S. global and the Israeli regional empires. The U.S. federal government and the mainstream media often move in lockstep.

Apart from a massively greater overall civilian toll inflicted on Palestinians in Gaza—the vast undercount stands at 34,000 Palestinian deaths compared to the deaths of 1,139 Israeli civilians, soldiers, and foreign workers. This staggering ratio—over 14,000 Palestinian children (with many thousands under the rubble) compared to 30 Israeli children—escapes proper reporting. “The Others” don’t get accurate coverage as was also the case with huge Iraqi losses during the Bush/Cheney criminal war.  

How about the application of the right to self-defense? Every state has the right to self-defense. Count the many times you have heard, “Israel has a right to defend itself” compared to “Palestine has a right to defend itself.” Members of Congress who bellow the former declaration daily can not get themselves to say the latter. It is a forbidden phrase. Yet, who is the violently occupying, colonizing, land- and water-stealing party? Israel. For over 50 years, more than 400 times more innocent Palestinians have been killed and injured compared to innocent Israeli civilians. Where is the detailed coverage of the loss of life from enforced destitution and denial of life-saving medicines, equipment, and emergency transport to health facilities? Again, it is “The Others.”

“The Others” are always described with less charitable words. In a meticulous content analysis by The Intercept of the Los Angeles Times, TheNew York Times, and TheWashington Post between October 7 and November 24, the use of the words “slaughtered,” “horrific,” and “massacre” in relation to Israeli and Palestinians killed was 218 to 9!   https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/palestinians-victims-empire-others

2024-02-14 The Injured Gaza Boy and His Drawing: Do Palestinians Have the Right to Self-Defense?     On February 8, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was in Washington on an official visit, aimed at working jointly with the United States to make “sure that Israel has what it needs to defend itself”.  If such a statement was made soon after the Al-Aqsa Flood Operation of October 7, one may cognize its logic, based on the well-known, inherent bias of both Washington and Berlin towards Israel. 

 The statement and the visit, however, were conducted on the 125th day of one of the bloodiest genocides in modern history.   The purpose of the visit was highlighted in a press conference by White House spokesperson John Kirby, even though, hours later, US President Joe Biden admitted that Israel has gone “over the top” in its response to the Hamas attack on October 7.

Article 51, often used by great powers to justify their wars and military interventions, was designed with a completely different legal spirit in mind.  Article 2 (4) of Chapter I in the UN Charter prohibits the “threat or use of force in international relations.” It also “calls on all Members to respect the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of other states.”   Since Israel is in violation of Article 2 (4), it simply has no right to invoke Article 51.

In November 2012, Palestine was recognized as an Observer State at the UN. It is also a member of countless international treaties, and is recognized by 139 countries out of the 193 UN members.   Even if we accept the argument that the UN Charter only applies to full UN members, the Palestinian right to self-defense can still be established.

In 1960, General Assembly Declaration No. 1594 guaranteed independence to colonized nations and people. Although it did not discuss the right of the colonized to use force, it condemned the use of force against liberation movements.

In 1964, the UNGA voted in favor of Resolution No. 2105, which recognized the legitimacy of the ‘struggle’ of colonized nations to exercise their right to self-determination.

In 1973, the Assembly passed Resolution 38/17 of 1983. 2024-02-16 Imperiled Gazans Do Have Somewhere to Go   The place where they can go, writes Sam Husseini, is back to the homes in what is now Israel, from which they were forced out in 1948. 

As Professor John Quigley has noted: “  “They are entitled to repatriation under international law, including the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination which Israel has signed and ratified.” (See his writing on this subject here and here.)

And of course there’s U.N. Resolution 194 of Dec. 11, 1948 which  “Resolves that the refugees wishing to return to their homes and live at peace with their neighbours should be permitted to do so at the earliest practicable date, and that compensation should be paid for the property of those choosing not to return…”

The extremely pro-Israel U.S. president, Harry Truman, would state the following year that if   “Israel continues to reject the basic principles set forth” in that U.N. resolution, the U.S. government “will regretfully be forced to the conclusion that a revision of its attitude toward Israel has become unavoidable.”

U.N. mediator Count Folke Bernadotte would report on Sept. 18, 1948:   “It would be an offence against the principles of elemental justice if these innocent victims of the conflict were denied the right to return to their homes, while Jewish immigrants flow into Palestine, and, indeed, at least offer the threat of permanent replacement of the Arab refugees, who have been rooted in the land for centuries.”  

The prospect of Palestinians going back to their homes continues to bring out the most murderous impulses in Israeli officials. AntiWar.com reports:  “Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir said on Sunday that Israeli forces should shoot Palestinian women and children in Gaza if they get too close to the Israeli border. … ‘We cannot have women and children getting close to the border… anyone who gets near must get a bullet [in his head],’ Ben-Gvir said   

Indeed, in 2018 the “Great March of Return” began, as Palestinians in Gaza tried to simply walk back to their homes.  More than 215 Palestinian civilians, including more than 40 children, were killed during those demonstrations, and thousands more wounded by live fire during those protests between March 2018 and December 2019.  A UN commission of inquiry found that Israel’s use of lethal force against protesters warrants criminal investigation and prosecution and may amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity.  https://consortiumnews.com/2024/02/16/imperiled-gazans-do-have-somewhere-to-go/

2024-08-27   Palestinian Healthcare Workers Chained, Starved, Sexually Abused: New HRW Report on Israeli Prisons   We speak with Human Rights Watch researcher Milena Ansari about the organization’s new report detailing the torture of Palestinian medical workers in Israeli prisons. HRW spoke with eight doctors, paramedics and nurses who were picked up in Gaza before being transferred to the notorious Sde Teiman camp and other facilities, where they say they suffered beatings, starvation, humiliation, electric shocks and other forms of abuse. The men also describe threats of sexual violence during brutal interrogations and seeing another prisoner bleeding after being gang-raped with an M16 rifle by three soldiers. The findings track with other reports from researchers and survivors, and HRW has called on the International Criminal Court to investigate Israel for its attacks on healthcare workers. “We’re really ringing the alarm about the situation inside the Israeli custody and detention facilities,” says Ansari, who says evidence is mounting of a “systematic pattern of ill-treatment and abuse.”   https://www.democracynow.org/2024/8/27/hrw_report

2024-02-02 Released Palestinian prisoners tell horrific stories of brutal torture in Israeli jails    Testimonies by Palestinian prisoners recently released from Israeli occupation prisons revealed a number of violations and practices of torture being committed against them in detention.   Israeli occupation authorities have recently released 114 Gazan prisoners and returned them to the Gaza Strip through Karm Abu Salem crossing in the southern tip of the enclave.  Released prisoners narrated details of cruel torture they encountered inside Israeli prisons, as signs of torture and beatings were so obvious on their bodies and skins.

Speaking to Aljazeera, the elderly Mahmoud Al-Nabulsi said, “The IOF stormed my house in Al-Amal neighborhood in Khan Yunis. I told them I was sick and could not move, but they arrested me any way and put me inside a demolished house before being transferred to Israeli detention centers. I spent ten days in prison. We were beaten and tortured every day. I had never seen this torture in my life. They carried out the worst violations against us.”  

“If I had stayed in prison for two more days, I would have lost my life. They kept asking me about Hamas’s tunnels and Israeli captives. I told them I did not know anything. I am 70 years old,” Al-Nabulsi added.   “We were deprived of drinking water for 4 days. They were pouring water on the ground in front of us while we were thirsty,” he said. 

The released prisoner Nidal Mansour said while lying on his back in hospital that he was arrested with others after the IOF destroyed his house in Sheikh Radwan neighborhood north of Gaza City in mid-November. There are hundreds of other prisoners who are still held in detention camps inside and around the Gaza Strip and subjected to the most severe forms of torture by the IOF, he added.

In one testimony from Khaled Al-Nabris from Khan Yunis, he said, “When we evacuated Khan Yunis and passed the checkpoint, I was kidnapped by Israeli troops who took me along with others to prisons where we were subjected to severe torture. We were forced to use wet blankets under extreme cold with no water to drink.”   “The IOF transferred us to another place. There, we were subjected to a new kind of torture as we witnessed a different kind of torture in each place we were taken to. The officer hit me on the head, and when I complained, he would hit me more. I could not sleep because of the cold. 2023-04-09 Israel’s War Against Mosques in Occupied Palestine      Israel has a long history of violating the Palestinians’ right to worship.   Palestinian Islamic sanctities are constantly targeted by Israeli occupation forces.   Israel and its Jewish settlers have killed many Palestinians in different mosques.  

Israel has consistently singled out Alaqsa Mosque with restrictions attacks and raids.   Israel also restricts Muslims’ access to Ibrahimi Mosque in Al-Khalil/Hebron.     Israel blocked the call to prayer in Ibrahimi Mosque 613 times in 2022.   Since 1948 Israel has deprived Palestinians of worshipping at dozens of holy sites either through destruction or closure. 2023-03-06 Israel: UN expert condemns brutal attacks on Palestinians at Al-Aqsa Mosque   A UN expert today condemned the violent incursions by Israeli forces into the Haram Al-Sharif compound and the attacks on Palestinian worshippers at Al-Aqsa Mosque on Wednesday.

“As Palestinian Muslims gathered for Ramadan prayers exercising their right to worship in Al-Aqsa Mosque, Israeli authorities used blatantly excessive and unjustified force against them,” said Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

Albanese said at least 31 Palestinians were reportedly injured inside and immediately outside the compound, while paramedics were allegedly prevented from providing medical treatment to the wounded. According to initial accounts, Israeli forces violently entered Al-Aqsa Mosque, used stun grenades and tear gas, fired sponge-tipped bullets, and indiscriminately beat Muslim worshippers – including elderly people and women – with batons and rifle butts.
