Carolyn Scarr

My Encounter With the Anarchists by Carolyn S. Scarr

(anarchism |ˈanərˌkizəm| noun belief in the abolition of all government and the organization of society on a voluntary, cooperative basis without recourse to force or compulsion.   from the dictionary in my MacIntosh)

Some years back I drove out alone to the Concord Naval Weapons Station, just to be a witness, with no intention of joining in an action.  After some standing around on  Port Chicago Highway where the tracks crossed the road , the majority of those present decided to go down and block the gate to the loading dock area.

Four young people wearing buttons with the circle A symbol of a San Francisco anarchists group asked if I could give them a ride down to that gate.  They were pretty skinny and all fit in my Volvo.

As we drove down the road I could overhear their discussion.  One of my passengers was a young woman new to the concept of civil disobedience.  She was uncertain about whether she wanted to get arrested that morning –– probably for the first time.

The others in this group of anarchists talked with the young woman, laying out the ups and downs, the pros and cons of getting busted at all, and on that morning.  None of them told her what she should do.  I was impressed with their discussion, thinking quietly to myself that these young people were certainly clear on the concept of their principles.

I don’t remember what the occasion of my trip to the tracks was.  Greg was certainly there, he always was.  Definitely mid 90s or so. I did go out from time to time.
This is as full a story as I can think of. I am sure these folks came in from SF, so something must have been planned. I guess this is not a useful story except for my own enjoyment.

Carolyn Scarr — “Peace Poetry”  I am constructing a Website for my friend, Carolyn Scarr’s writings. She is a formidable poet and deserves the wider audience a Website can afford her. Here she is, above, being the “Bad German”. You all remember the “Good German”, patriotic and supportive of her elected leader, tacitly acquiescing to …   http://www.peacehost.net/Carolyn/

2012-09-06 Arms shipment protest, 25 years later •           Brian Willson comment:  September 9, 2012 at 2:26 There have been several attempts by writers to chronicle this rich history at Concord Naval Weapons Station, including blockades as early as the 1960s. The most recent effort, beginning in the early 1990s, was undertaken by Elizabeth Hallett who lives in Ashland, Oregon. But the book never materialized, at least partially for lack of funds.

It seems an appropriate time to locate a writer who has both the competence, passion, and capacity to take this project on. The 1987-1991 time period was an incredible example of 24 hour, 30 month Occupation encampment of a public site (road right of way) to raise a serious question of public policy, in that case of systematic murder being carried out in Central America. The order to move and operate those trains was a direct and indispensable component of the crimes being committed in our names as US citizens.

To resurrect this history now would seem likely to excite some writer somewhere to thoroughly examine and illustrate this significant memory.  https://wagingnonviolence.org/2012/09/arms-shipment-protest-25-years-later/
