2023-11-06 Here are 3 Ways the U.S. Media Tries to Justify Israel’s Attacks on Civilians in Gaza      From the use of terms such as “human shields,” “terror tunnels” and “Hamas strongholds,” media outlets are covering for Israel’s devastating bombing campaign on Palestinians.

if the “terror tunnels” are everywhere, and are legitimate military targets, then any civilian standing in any Gazan population center is little more than a Hamas “human shield.  A variation on the “terror tunnel” panic is the idea that Israel reluctantly kills civilians because Hamas uses them as “human shields.” This was casually asserted by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) last week while she lamented the deaths of hundreds killed by an Israeli airstrike targeting Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza.   The short version is: Even if one accepts the premise that Hamas is using human shields, from an ethical and legal standpoint, Israel is compelled by international law to not kill hundreds of civilians at a time in order to target, allegedly, one “Hamas commander.” That is a war crime.

The claim that Hamas is “using human shields” is a specific charge that requires a specific standard of evidence to prove, none of which has been publicly provided by Israel thus far to any media outlets or third-party human rights groups of any kind. Israel’s definition of “human shields” is simply “a combatant may or may not be in the same general area as hundreds of civilians.” Israel rarely bothers naming these combatants, much less providing evidence that they were in the area in question after said area has been reduced to rubble and corpses.   https://inthesetimes.com/article/israel-palestine-media-hamas-human-shields-war-civilians-gaza

2023-11-30 The color of pure evil: A commentary on the moral inequalities of Israel and Hamas

[MEK Note:  The lies and hatred toward Palestinians expressed in this article are hard to fathom.  Israel has mostly released woman and children held in detention without charges, some for years, yet the author calls all of them murders and terrorists.  Meanwhile Israel has murdered over 15,000 civilians, mostly women, children and even babies and the author cheers for more of the same!  Every Palestinian is a Hamas!  Every Hamas a Terrorist! Every Terrorist must be eliminated!]

Each night, Israelis are glued to their television screens, witnessing the return of hostages in a global media event broadcasted by Arab and international networks. The anticipation is palpable as people watch with bated breath, hoping to see innocent Israelis emerge from the clutches of their Hamas captors.

However, labeling the truce as a mere “hostage exchange” oversimplifies the complexity of the situation. Hamas has reluctantly released abducted children, babies, sick, and elderly individuals who suffered in underground terror tunnels in Gaza without adequate medical treatment. In contrast, Israel not only agreed to release convicted murderers and terrorists held in its prisons but also accepted a conspicuously unequal exchange, releasing three terrorists for each innocent Israeli.

Despite the significant concessions made by Israel, the nation’s moral stance remains resolute. The safe return of its citizens takes precedence, even at the high cost of halting military operations and releasing Palestinian terrorists. This underscores the unwavering commitment to prioritizing the well-being of its people over other considerations.

The most glaring difference between Israel and Hamas can be viewed in the fundamental belief in the sanctity of life and the glorification of death. The intrinsic value that the Jewish people place on life has come with a high cost, as evident through the hostage negotiations that have taken place throughout the humanitarian truce that began last Friday. While this has been a matter of significant public and political discourse, and even when faced with such a difficult strategic decision, Israeli leadership has demonstrated its adherence to the Jewish value of the sanctity of life.  https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/the-color-of-pure-evil-a-commentary-on-the-moral-inequalities-of-israel-and-hamas/ar-AA1kNSAB

2023-11-28 “Atmosphere of Hate”: AFSC Leader & Palestinian Vermonter on Shooting of 3 College Students    We get an update on the three university students of Palestinian descent who were shot Saturday in Burlington, Vermont. Two were wearing keffiyehs and speaking Arabic at the time of the attack. Hisham Awartani, Kinnan Abdalhamid and Tahseen Ahmad are now recovering, though Hisham Awartani, who was shot in the spine, has reportedly lost feeling in the lower part of his body. The FBI is reportedly investigating whether the shooting was a hate crime. “This atmosphere of hate” starts “from the federal level,” declares Wafic Faour of the organization Vermonters for Justice in Palestine, who joins us to discuss the recent history of Vermont’s suppression of pro-Palestinian sentiment. “If you talk about Palestinian rights, you’re going to be called ‘terrorist,’” says Faour, yet although “the attacker is a white supremacist, … we don’t call it as is.” We also speak to Joyce Ajlouny, former director of the Ramallah Friends School in the occupied West Bank, where the three victims were students together. She reads poems they wrote in sixth grade and notes that over the course of the decadeslong occupation, “Palestinians of all faiths … have not been offered the humanity and dignity that they deserve.”  https://www.democracynow.org/2023/11/28/vermont_palestinian_students_shooting_wafic_faour

2023-11-24 The hostages’ families should have been jailed to shut them up, says former US citizen who was an Israeli spy.    Jonathan Pollard, a former US intelligence analyst imprisoned for spying for Israel, has called for hostages’ families to be silenced and arrested.  Pollard told Israeli media that the families of Israeli hostages should have been jailed to shut them up. He also said posters of the captives should never have been hung up.   “When Israel declared war, the first thing that the government should have done was declare a state of national emergency and told all the hostages: ‘You will keep your mouth shut or we will shut them for you,'” Pollard said.  He said the Israeli government should have prevented the hostages’ families from “interfering” with their management of this war.   He implied that the hostages’ families were being “used by the international community” or “by our own leftists” as a weapon against the Israeli government.  https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/the-hostages-families-should-have-been-jailed-to-shut-them-up-says-former-us-citizen-who-was-an-israeli-spy/ar-AA1ktxTD

2023-11-14 Alan Dershowitz: Biden Should Be Telling Israelis To Kill MORE People In Hospitals, Not Less     Alan Dershowitz accuses President Biden of playing into Hamas’s hands. Ana Kasparian and Cenk Uygur discuss on The Young Turks.  “Harvard Law School professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz slammed President Joe Biden for urging Israel not to bomb hospitals in Gaza.   On Monday, the president said hospitals in the densely populated territory of 2.3 million people “must be protected” as Israel carries out its response to terrorist attacks perpetrated by Hamas on Oct. 7 that killed 1,200 Israelis. His comments came as Israeli forces approached the Al-Shifa Hospital complex in Gaza City. The hospital is without electricity and fuel.    The Israeli government said the hospital houses a Hamas military command center. A U.S. official echoed this claim on Monday, but the person declined to be identified.”* https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKaHChaKYtI

2023-11-10 The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Haters and Racists on Both Sides        And, no, I don’t believe there will ever be a peaceful resolution to the conflicts in Israel/Gaza, because there are haters and racists on both sides who dehumanize one another. This crap has been going on for a century in Israel, since well before the founding of the current state of Israel in 1948.

And, yes, both sides have plenty of hate and racism to be ashamed of. But we rarely hear about that on the Israeli side. As I wrote in my 2014 article on Zionism:  In Israeli society, anti-Arab racism and discrimination is rampant, whether the censors want that known or not. In a previous article I mentioned “Jim Crow” laws in Israel, and separate buses and schools for Israelis and Palestinians.     https://www.activistpost.com/2023/11/the-israeli-palestinian-conflict-haters-and-racists-on-both-sides.html

Hamas Stronghold

Hamas Stronghold

Updated 2023-11-22

2023-11-06 Here are 3 Ways the U.S. Media Tries to Justify Israel’s Attacks on Civilians in Gaza      From the use of terms such as “human shields,” “terror tunnels” and “Hamas strongholds,” media outlets are covering for Israel’s devastating bombing campaign on Palestinians.

A breaking news alert Tuesday by the New York Times about an Israeli strike on the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza, which killed hundreds of civilians, revived an old racist trope used to militarize civilian populations by referring to them as living in, or being part of, a militant group’s “stronghold”:

The Times, of course, would never frame an ISIS attack in downtown Paris with a headline like “Deadly Blasts Hit NATO Stronghold in Paris,” but the paper of record has no problem doing this for Arabs in Lebanon for no apparent reason other than orientalist dehumanization. Referring to Paris, London, or New York, after an ISIS attack on civilians, as a “NATO stronghold” would be seen as bizarre, callous, and effectively doing free propaganda for ISIS.

While the context is obviously different, a similar dehumanizing effect is achieved when sites of mass civilian death are callously referred to as “Hamas strongholds.” Justifying airstrikes that kill hundreds of civilians by claiming that the struck site was an enemy “stronghold,” even though Israel cannot be bothered to produce evidence of any military personnel or activity at the site, serves no other purpose than to posthumously conscript the dead men, women, and children buried under rubble as apparent Hamas militants who deserved to die.

If spatial proximity to Hamas fighters means one’s collateral murder is already justified, then Israel already had its built-in justification for targeting Gaza and eliminating or displacing anyone and everyone living in the 25-by-5-mile open-air prison.  https://inthesetimes.com/article/israel-palestine-media-hamas-human-shields-war-civilians-gaza

2024-08-21 Gallant says 150 tunnels have been destroyed along Egypt-Gaza border, Hamas’s Rafah Brigade defeated    Defense Minister Yoav Gallant says more than 150 tunnels have been demolished along the Philadelphi Corridor, the Egypt-Gaza border area, and that Hamas’s Rafah Brigade has been defeated.

“The most important thing… is to remember what the goals of the war are, to meet all the goals of the war, both regarding Hamas and also regarding the hostages, and to look north now,” Gallant says to troops stationed in the Philadelphi Corridor area.    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/gallant-says-150-tunnels-have-been-destroyed-along-egypt-gaza-border-hamas-s-rafah-brigade-defeated/ar-AA1pbXDu?

2023-12-05 Israel may flood Gaza tunnels to flush out Hamas: Report  Hamas continues to hold Israeli captives in its extensive tunnel network under the besieged enclave.   Israel has assembled a large system of pumps that may be used to flood tunnels used by Hamas under the Gaza strip in a bid to drive out itst fighters, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on 5 December.   Citing US officials, the WSJ reported that in mid-November the Israel army completed the set-up of at least five pumps about a mile north of the Al-Shati refugee camp on the Gaza coast. The pumps, which can move thousands of cubic meters of water per hour, will allegedly be used to flood the tunnels within the coming weeks.

It was not clear whether Israel would consider using the pumps before all captives held by Hamas in the besieged enclave were released. Hamas has previously said it has hidden the captives it took during its 7 October surprise attack in “safe places and tunnels.”   https://new.thecradle.co/articles/israel-may-flood-gaza-tunnels-to-flush-out-hamas-report

2023-11-20 What Israel’s video of ‘Hamas tunnel’ under al-Shifa tells us   The Israeli military also released a video that was recorded using two separate cameras on November 17. Spokesperson Daniel Hagari told reporters the entrance was uncovered when a military bulldozer knocked down the outside wall of the hospital, revealing a metallic spiral staircase that descended 10m (32ft) and led to a blast door, which is typically a metallic door with strong closures and hinges, designed to resist explosions. Such doors are usually found on facilities such as bomb shelters.

But military analyst Zoran Kusovac quoted a civil engineer from Gaza who suggested that the video is actually clips of two different tunnels spliced together.   The first section of the video shows the vertical shaft that goes down. It shows features such as load-bearing concrete columns. They seem to be built with regular civil engineering techniques, which would have required large and loud machines such as concrete mixers.   Such a construction could not have been done in secret, the way Hamas tunnels are usually built. The purpose of this construction remains unknown.  Satellite images and archival photos showed that the hatch that Israel claimed was the tunnel entrance was actually part of a water reservoir system that was used to fill therapeutic pools for amputees, water the grounds, and also was an emergency water source.

The second part of the clip shows the horizontal tunnel. This displays features characteristic of Hamas tunnels — pre-fabricated pieces connected together section by section.  A control centre has not been found so far. Israeli troops have not yet tried to open the blast door at the end of the tunnel that they claim was under al-Shifa, fearing it could be booby-trapped, said Hagari.

Tunnels in Gaza were first built in 1980 at a time when the enclave was under Israeli occupation, and before the formation of Hamas in 1987. They were constructed under the Egyptian border for smuggling all sorts of goods, including weapons, fuel and black market goods.   Over time, Palestinians realised that tunnels could have a military use.

Israel placed a blockade on the Gaza Strip after Hamas gained control of it in 2007. Tunnels became the means to bypass the siege and to transport food, goods and weapons. Under Hamas, the tunnels expanded strategically.   The tunnels are also used by Hamas for wired communications, since Israel can intercept wireless communications.  After attacking Gaza in 2014, Israel realised the extent and sophistication of the tunnels, then believed to have surpassed 100km (62 miles).

A tunnel war would entail a whole lot of destruction. The magnitude of explosives would be larger and deadlier than usual due to the smaller area of the tunnels. For the same reason, the use of regular ammunition might be too “clumsy” and hence unviable.    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/what-israel-s-video-of-hamas-tunnel-under-al-shifa-tells-us/ar-AA1keSDk

Over the past two weeks, the New York Times ran three different articles full of hand wringing over what to do about the scary reality of Hamas’ underground tunnel network in Gaza. Such a network, to some extent, no doubt exists. Many Palestinians have argued it’s more of a network for smuggling harmless goods in and out of Gaza due to the Israeli blockade preventing imports and exports, rather than a sprawling, sophisticated underground lair teaming with James Bond-like Hamas villains.   The tunnels in Gaza almost certainly serve a combination of functions, for Hamas and non-Hamas-affiliated Palestinians alike, but the breathless coverage of the alleged “terror tunnels” serves one primary purpose: to justify massive civilian death.    Reporters at the Times have focused intently on the “terror tunnel” issue, including lead liberal opinion-shaper David Leonhardt, who built a whole article around it for his very popular daily newsletter.

Citing a 2014 Washington Post article—an article that largely relies on Israeli and pro-Israel sources — Leonhardt casually asserts that these tunnels are deliberately placed under hospitals, schools, and mosques so that they can be used as protection from bunker busters aiming for the tunnels.     Surely, such a major claim would require more neutral sourcing, or evidence, or some type of demonstrable methodology for coming to this conclusion

There are also two massive holes in the ghoulish logic of “we have to kill civilians because the terror tunnels leave no other option,”

why doesn’t Israel publish a map of the tunnels and advise civilians to avoid these areas? Israel has provided such information about so-called “safe zones” in the past; it has also bombed those “safe zones.” In theory, the Israeli government could provide a clear map of the “terror tunnels” — they supposedly know where the tunnels are. Yet, it doesn’t do this.

 An enemy “blending with civilians” was the exact same logic the U.S. used to justify killing millions of Vietnamese civilians in its decades-long war against the Vietnamese insurgency. “That’s the same crap we did in Vietnam,”

Ultimately, scare stories about Hamas “terror tunnels” have no practical journalistic effect other than militarizing the whole of Gazan society. After all, if the “terror tunnels” are everywhere, and are legitimate military targets, then any civilian standing in any Gazan population center is little more than a Hamas “human shield.”  https://inthesetimes.com/article/israel-palestine-media-hamas-human-shields-war-civilians-gaza

2023-10-31 THE LABYRINTH WAR   More than 8,000 residents of the Gaza Strip have been killed so far, forty percent of them children, according to the international aid group Defense for Children, in retaliation for Hamas’s terrorist attack on an all-night Israeli dance party, kibbutzim, and small farming villages in the south of Israel on October 7. Hamas still holds more than 230 Israeli hostages it seized on that murderous Saturday, when scarcely any Israeli forces appeared on the scene for as long as ten hours.

The Israeli death count for the Hamas attack of October 7 now stands at 1,400 and includes 317 members of the Israeli military—some of those victims may be military contractors—and 58 policemen. At least thirty Americans, according to the State Department, many of them working for NGOs, were also killed, and thirteen Americans are still unaccounted for. Dozens of those captured by Hamas—among them the very young and the very old—never made it to its tunnel system because they fell or, more likely, were flung off the bicycles or motorcycles that were carrying them and were immediately executed.

The Hamas tunnels “were dazzling in their ingenuity,” I was told by an official who helped Israel map the tunnels and come to grips with the threat posed by easy citywide access for Hamas fighters. “There were administrative tunnels, command-and-control tunnels, and storage tunnels throughout Gaza City.” he said, with hundreds of entry points. It was decided after the October 7 attack that “all buildings with terminal exits and entry points had to be bombed.”

The amount of dirt and debris removed for the underground construction in Gaza City, the official said, was estimated to amount to 75 million cubic feet—a total whose disposal would require 140,000 dumpsters. The official used an analogy to describe the project, which was closely monitored for years by outside experts working with Israeli intelligence: enough material was removed to build the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt.

In my recent reporting, I’ve been told that at the time of the October raid as many as 15,000 to 20,000 fighters were living and training in the vast system, which included heat, light, and ventilation, even air-conditioning. The citywide access made it possible for many to come and go to their families in Gaza City.

The talks, as described by an Israeli source, are underway even as Israeli special forces and regular army soldiers are in the Gaza Strip penetrating tunnels from known access points and destroying exits and ventilation ducts as they move. The main goal of the penetrations thus far has been to determine where the hostages are being held. There has been little resistance, I have been told, with only one significant casualty as of Sunday.    Many of the tunnels are believed to have collapsed as a result of the heavy bombing, and it is not clear how long the Hamas fighters can survive, despite its heavy stockpiling of food and water. I also have been told that there is no power throughout the underground tunnel system and all the fighters and hostages are living in the dark.  https://seymourhersh.substack.com/p/the-labyrinth-war

2014-07-26 The Long History Of The Gaza Tunnels     Israel certainly had been aware of Gaza tunnels before this war. First, it’s an ancient practice.   In his forthcoming book, Gaza: A History, Jean-Pierre Filiu describes the “first historic reference to the loose subsoil of Gaza” during Alexander the Great’s 332 BC siege of this Mediterranean city, then under Persian rule.

In more recent times, Palestinians subverted Israeli controls over travel, imports and exports to and from the Gaza Strip by digging tunnels to south, into Egypt.   Cars, cows, and cigarettes came through what were commonly called smuggling tunnels, although Hamas taxed what it could after it came to power 2006. Cheap Egyptian gasoline kept Gaza going when Israel fuel was too expensive. Weapons and sometimes people travelled through those commercial tunnels too.

Hamas also used a tunnel from Gaza to enter Israel and kidnap an Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit, in 2006. He was held for five years, until Israel agreed to free more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners.

The tunnels to Egypt have been largely shut down in the past year, following the ouster of Egyptian leader Mohammed Morsi, whose Muslim Brotherhood was sympathetic to Hamas. Under the current Egyptian President, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Egypt has bulldozed those tunnels, stifling the already weak Gazan economy.

The network of military tunnels snaking north and east into Israel were likely dug over several years. But they only began to be exposed in the past year or so, even as the commercial tunnels to Egypt were being shut down.   Heavy flooding last year revealed some. The Israeli military found one last fall near a kibbutz and much bigger one this spring. Extensive Israeli media coverage may have helped cement worry of infiltration in the Israeli public’s mind.

In retaliation, Israel stopped permitting concrete to be brought into Gaza — a concession that had only recently been won.    These militant tunnels are not mole holes. Some are tall enough to stand in, reinforced with concrete and equipped with electricity and phone lines in some cases.    https://www.npr.org/sections/parallels/2014/07/26/335332220/the-long-history-of-the-gaza-tunnels

Final Solution of the Jewish Question

Final Solution of the Jewish Question

Updated 2023-11-21

“FINAL SOLUTION”: OVERVIEW      The term “Final Solution of the Jewish Question” was a euphemism View This Term in the Glossary used by Nazi Germany’s leaders. It referred to the mass murder of Europe’s Jews. It brought an end to policies aimed at encouraging or forcing Jews to leave the German Reich and other parts of Europe. Those policies were replaced by systematic annihilation.

It is not known when the leaders of Nazi Germany definitively decided to implement the “Final Solution.” What is clear, however, is that the “Final Solution” was the culmination of a decade of increasingly severe discriminatory, anti-Jewish measures implemented by the Nazis. Under the rule of Adolf Hitler, the persecution and segregation of Jews was implemented in stages. Today, the “Final Solution” View This Term in the Glossary is used as a synonym for the genocide of Europe’s Jews.    German SS and police murdered nearly 2,700,000 Jews in the killing centers either by asphyxiation with poison gas or by shooting. In its entirety, the “Final Solution” View This Term in the Glossary called for the murder of all European Jews by gassing, shooting, and other means. Six million Jewish men, women, and children were killed during the Holocaust—two-thirds of the Jews living in Europe before World War II.    https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/final-solution-overview

Diplomatic Ties Broken

Diplomatic Ties Broken

Updated 2023-11-21

2023-11-22 South African Parliament votes to close the Israeli embassy and suspend diplomatic relations. 248-91   Full resolution proposed by EFF and amended by ANC:  That the House –

(1) notes the latest developments in the Israel-Palestine conflict;

(2) further notes the continuing building of settler houses in the land of Palestinian people and further land encroachment that is against numerous United Nations resolutions;

(3) realises that the Apartheid-Israel government is in a perpetual breach of international law against annexation and, as a result, the Israeli government aggression gives rise to violent resistance;

(4) understands that the expansionist policy and further construction of settler houses in the Palestinian land is an impediment to the peaceful resolution of the century old Israel and Palestine conflict;

(5) further understands that the annexation of Palestinian land and killing of Palestinian children is a violent act which itself promotes a violent reaction, and that land dispossession is a violent exercise that undermines the very humanity of the Palestinian people;

(6) recognises that peace in the Middle East will never prevail for as long as the land of the Palestinians is occupied, and more of the little remaining land is annexed;

(7) condemns the killing of defenceless children and women in Gaza, including the bombing of hospitals;  (calls on all freedom loving people of the world to support the Palestinian campaign to take back their land in all of its manifestations;

(9) calls upon the government to close the Israel Embassy in South Africa and suspend all diplomatic relations with Israel until a ceasefire is agreed to by Israel and Israel commits to binding United Nations facilitated negotiations whose outcome must be a just, sustainable and lasting peace; and

(10) calls upon the government to make representations to the International Criminal Court to investigate the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and key decision makers in his cabinet for violations of international criminal law and crimes against humanity.   https://countercurrents.org/2023/11/south-african-parliament-votes-to-close-the-israeli-embassy-and-suspend-diplomatic-relations-248-91/

2023-11-21 South African Lawmakers Vote to Cut Diplomatic Ties With Israel    South Africa’s Parliament on Tuesday voted overwhelmingly for a suspension of diplomatic ties with Israel over what numerous lawmakers called its “genocidal” war on Gaza, a move that came a day after the country’s government urged the International Criminal Court to issue an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Lawmakers voted 248-91 for the resolution calling on South Africa to cut ties with Israel until it agrees to a cease-fire in Gaza, where authorities say that 46 days of relentless bombardment by air, land, and sea has left more than 14,000 Palestinians—including more than 3,900 women and 5,800 children— dead, with tens of thousands more wounded, thousands missing beneath the rubble, and nearly 1.7 million people, or about 70% of the population, forcibly displaced.       https://www.commondreams.org/news/israel-south-africa-2666327494

Democratic Double Standard

Democratic Double Standard

Updated 2023-11-21

2023-11-07 Democrats Cannot “Have Double Standards”: An Interview With State Rep. Abdelnasser Rashid       As the Israeli military continues an unprecedented assault on the besieged Gaza Strip, with the death toll of Palestinians reaching more than 10,000 at the time this article is being published, local and national elected officials have been weighing in — with the overwhelming majority boasting unequivocal support for the Israeli government and endorsing the billions that President Joe Biden wants to hand over to fuel Israel’s war machine. (The White House even pushed for a measure that effectively gives Israel a check to purchase $3.5 billion in arms in complete secrecy.)

There are 435 members of the House of Representatives, making the call for a cease-fire come from just over 5%. Even stalwart progressive champions like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) are not calling for a cease-fire (Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin on Nov. 2 became the first senator to call for a cease-fire).

And while the assault on Gaza has much of the world’s attention, settlers in the West Bank are increasingly committing acts of violence against Palestinians and working to drive Palestinians from their homes. In one case, near Nablus, an Israeli settler shot and killed a Palestinian man who was harvesting olives. In an article for In These Times, Ryah Aqel also described the wanton violence of extremist settlers in the South Hebron Hills.

Since the beginning of their assault on Gaza, the Israeli government has also captured and imprisoned some 2,000 Palestinians from the West Bank — many of them being held in administrative detention which allows the Israeli government to jail them without charges or trial. This is on top of the thousands of Palestinian prisoners already being held (there are now more than 10,000 imprisoned Palestinians).

These cases and what Rashid’s family faced this summer are an example of what advocates for Palestine mean when they say, “History didn’t start on October 7.”  It should not surprise us that Israel is acting in a way that is violating basic human decency, violating international law, committing war crimes in Gaza. The Israeli government is completely and utterly unhinged and has been for a long time, which is why we’re seeing the devastation that we’re seeing in Gaza. The idea that any civilized country would order the evacuation of 1.1 million people over a 24-hour period with nowhere to go, and then bomb them as they’re going to those places and bomb the streets and order evacuations of hospitals as those hospitals are treating people and then attack a hospital, killing 500 Palestinians — this is not normal. This is consistent with the genocidal language that ministers in the Israeli government have been using for quite some time.

I’ve said this, but I want to reiterate it, which is that it is absolutely imperative that elected officials — and particularly those in the Democratic Party who are trying to build a coalition of constituencies to support Democrats — not have double standards when it comes to human rights and democracy. Something as simple as a cease-fire should have been called for long ago. Accountability for Israel, for Netanyahu and his far-right government is something that people have to really reckon with. And I’m talking about Democratic elected officials all the way up to the President, and particularly those in Washington, D.C. If we want to have peace and safety for Palestinians and for Israelis, and if we want to address the so many other important issues around the environment, around reproductive health, around education and student debt, we need a movement of people with us and we cannot completely throw Palestinian, Arab and progressive voices for human rights to the side and expect that there won’t be a reaction.    https://inthesetimes.com/article/abdelnasser-rashid-palestine-gaza-israel-chicago-democrats-turmusaya

Britain

2023-11-09 When Britain Aided Israel’s Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine    Mark Curtis looks at the current war in Gaza from the perspective of Britain’s imperial past in this edited extract from his book Secret Affairs: Britain’s Collusion with Radical Islam.

After the Second World War British planners were confronted by the outbreak of a Jewish uprising in Palestine, which the U.K. had run since securing a “mandate” from the then League of Nations in 1922.   This uprising led to a series of momentous events that shape the present-day Middle East: the British decision in February 1947 to withdraw from Palestine, the U.N.’s decree in November 1947 to partition the territory, the Jewish declaration of the state of Israel in May 1948 and the first Arab–Israeli war, in which Israeli forces annexed much of Palestine by December of that year.

 A wave of terrorist attacks was conducted against British forces and Palestinian Arabs, in response to which the British declared martial law, enacted draconian emergency regulations and undertook brutal collective punishments on local Jewish communities.   Jewish antagonism towards Britain was shaped partly by London’s policy on Jewish immigration from Germany and elsewhere which, in deference to Arab objections, Britain was now trying to restrict.

During the last three years of the mandate, 40,000 illegal immigrants succeeded in entering Palestine, but shiploads of Jewish refugees regarded as illegal were intercepted at sea.  In 1946 the Royal Navy turned back 17 ships carrying refugees to their ports of origin, while MI6 [British foreign intelligence service] was instructed to sabotage some of the transport ships while in port.   The policy continued throughout 1947, and by December of that year over 51,000 passengers on 35 ships had been intercepted and interned by the British in Cyprus.

By this time, Clement Attlee’s Labour government had decided to give up on finding its own solution to the rebellion and had resolved to relinquish the mandate and hand the problem over to the recently formed United Nations.   Britain now began to promote the partition of Palestine into Jewish and Arab states, a policy supported by the Jewish leadership but which immediately undermined the interests of the Palestinians, who at the time made up around two-thirds of the population, compared to one-third of Jews.   In November 1947, the U.N. passed General Assembly Resolution 181, partitioning Palestine and awarding the Jews a state that comprised over half the country, against the will of the indigenous, majority population.   https://consortiumnews.com/2023/11/09/when-britain-aided-israels-ethnic-cleansing-of-palestine/

2014-10-15 British Parliament Votes Overwhelmingly In Favor Of Recognizing Palestine State, 274-12      Yesterday the British Parliament voted overwhelmingly (274-12) to recognize a Palestinian state, and if you listened to the debate, one theme above all else explains the crushing victory: The British public has been horrified by Gaza and its opinion of Israel has shifted. Even Conservative members of Parliament cited pressure from the public. As Labour’s Andy Slaughter said, Britain has witnessed a new “barbarism”:https://crooksandliars.com/2014/10/british-parliament-votes-overwhelmingly

Bahrain

Bahrain

Updated 2023-11-21

2023-11-18 US ‘Indispensable’ in Israel-Gaza Peace Process: Bahrain Crown Prince  Bahrain’s Crown Prince, Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, told reporters on Friday that the United States is “indispensable” in creating peace between Israel and Gaza.  Bahrain was one of the Arab states that signed the Abraham Accords that former President Donald Trump brokered in 2020. The peace deal established ties between Bahrain, Israel, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Now, Israel’s fellow signatories support a ceasefire in Gaza and a peace deal between Palestinians and Israelis, while also standing with Israel in challenging the militant Islam represented by Hamas and its Iranian backers.

“This is an intolerable situation, and we must do everything in our power to stop it. I condemn Hamas, unequivocally,” he said Friday ahead of the annual Manama Dialogue security summit. “The attacks on October 7 were barbaric. I unequivocally condemn the air campaign that resulted in the death of over 11,000 people in Gaza, 4,700 of which are children.”

 The Arab leader called on Hamas to release the women and children hostages, but also requested that Israel “release the women and children they hold, in exchange that we can get some sense and a few days or weeks or months or maybe years of peace and calm.”   Hamas has offered to exchange its hostages for roughly 6,000 Palestinian prisoners in Israel, which Israeli officials have rejected.    https://www.newsweek.com/us-indispensable-israel-gaza-peace-process-bahrain-crown-prince-1844958

2023-11-20 Dozens of babies ‘fighting serious infections’ taken to Egypt; 8 have died:    Twenty-eight of the 31 premature babies evacuated from Shifa Hospital on Sunday were transported to Egyptian medical facilities Monday, the same day 12 people were killed and others injured in what the Hamas-run Health Ministry said was Israeli shelling at another hospital in north Gaza. Israel said it returned fire from militants but did not shell Indonesian Hospital.

Of the original 39 premature babies authorities warned were endangered as fighting around Shifa intensified, eight have died. The surviving ones face an uphill battle after getting sick amid a lack of medicines, clean water and power for incubators along with other substandard conditions at the besieged Shifa, raided by Israeli forces last week.

“All babies are fighting serious infections and others conditions, and need specialized medical care,” World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesu said in a tweet that included a video showing the group effort to care for and transport the tiny infants.   The 31 babies were taken for stabilization Sunday to a hospital in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. Three of them remain there in “good health,” the Palestine Red Crescent Society said.

The WHO has evacuated some patients and staff from embattled Shifa in recent days but said it remains gravely concerned about the safety and health needs of more than 250 patients and 20 health workers who remain. Planning is underway to evacuate them, WHO said in a statement.   https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/israel-says-hamas-killed-teen-hostage-dad-of-captive-9-describes-nightmare-live-updates/ar-AA1keBNN
