2023-11-16 Cornel West CALLS OUT Bernie Sanders “Pathetic” Refusal to Call for CEASEFIRE      Status Coup’s Jordan Chariton interviewed independent presidential candidate Dr. Cornel West. 2023-11-10 Tulsi Gabbard Switches Anti-War Stance To Justify Israeli War Crimes!      During the 2016 presidential election, Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard emerged as a uniquely principled voice, criticizing the Clinton campaign and the DNC for icing Bernie Sanders out of the party’s nomination and for criticizing the U.S. war in Syria. So it comes as a terrible disappointment to hear Gabbard buying into the propaganda and spreading war machine talking points about Israel and the war on Gaza. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhg8OBz0zLQ

2023-11-10 Bernie Sanders Disappoints With Cease-Fire Refusal       Given the makeup of the US Senate, one would assume that the senator who would go out on a limb and become the first, and still the only one, to call for a ceasefire would be progressive firebrand Bernie Sanders. But it wasn’t. Instead, it was Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois.

Durbin is known as a relatively liberal senator, but he’s never been a leader on the issue of Palestine. Sanders, on the other hand, has been the most outspoken member of the Senate on Palestine, although that is a pretty low bar. Still, in the past, he has been willing to speak out.

During his 2016 presidential run, Sanders offered some mild criticism of Israeli policies, but did so in Brooklyn, New York, defying fears that this would cause his Jewish supporters to bolt. But nothing of the kind happened. Sanders has also spoken about enforcing US law on arms sales to Israel, a subject so controversial in Washington that it is seen as politically toxic. He has repeatedly criticized Israel’s policies; but on Gaza, he has absolutely refused to call for a ceasefire.

When asked, Sanders supported the Israeli view that military action must continue until Hamas is destroyed. “I don’t know how you can have a ceasefire, a permanent ceasefire, with an organization like Hamas, which is dedicated to turmoil and chaos and destroying the State of Israel,” Sanders told CNN. “I think what the Arab countries in the region understand is that Hamas has got to go.”

Ignoring demands.  Two weeks ago, more than 300 former Sanders staffers and campaign workers published an open letter calling on him to support a ceasefire, an end to the blockade of Gaza and “US military funding for war crimes against the Palestinian people, the expansion of settlements, and the occupation of Palestinian lands.”   https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/bernie-sanders-gaza-cease-fire

House Speaker Mike Johnson

House Speaker Mike Johnson

Updated 2023-11-26

2023-11-03 Mike Johnson went to Palestine with Jim Jordan and said citizens aren’t oppressed: report      Newly elected House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) took a trip to the Palestinian Territories with Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH), where he met up with extremist groups and proclaimed that there’s no oppression in the area, reported Mother Jones on Friday.  The trip took place in 2020, when the two lawmakers were in the minority and Johnson was an obscure backbencher.

“In February of that year, Johnson traveled to Israel with Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio),” reported David Corn. “The sponsor for this trip was the New York-based 12Tribe Films Foundation, a small outfit that that describes itself as ‘online warriors for truth about Israel and the Jewish people.’ The organization spent $34,520 — about one-quarter of its revenue that year — to fly the two lawmakers and their wives to Israel and host them for the week-long trip.”  https://www.rawstory.com/johnson-and-jordan-go-to-palestine/

Hillery Clinton

Hillery Clinton

Updated 2024-04-01

2024-02-06 Author of debunked NYT ‘Hamas r@pe’ report to share stage with Hillary Clinton     The reporter behind a discredited NY Times investigation alleging systematic sexual violence by Hamas on October 7 will appear alongside Hillary Clinton and key Biden foreign policy functionaries at a Columbia University event justifying Israel’s assault on Gaza.

Jeffrey Gettleman, the author of the New York Times’ discredited “Hamas mass rape” story, is set to share the stage with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in an upcoming panel on “conflict-related sexual violence” which will feature several other high-profile State Department functionaries.

A description of the event, hosted by Columbia University’s Institute of Global Politics, cites what it calls “Hamas’s brutal acts of sexual violence against Israelis on October 7” as “evidence” that “conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) is used widely as a weapon of war and a tactic of terrorism.”   https://thegrayzone.com/2024/02/06/nyt-hamas-report-hillary-clinton/

2023-11-23 “Liar!” Norm Finkelstein DISMANTLES Hillary Israel Spin      This is a teaser clip! Make sure to stay tuned for the entire interview this weekend. Krystal and Norm Finkelstein discuss Hillary Clinton’s take on Israel and Gaza. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4PckPdApIY

2023-11-17 Hillary Clinton Is Lying About the History Between Hamas and Israel     Hillary writes in The Atlantic, that “the only way to ensure Israel’s future as a secure, democratic, Jewish state is by achieving two states for two peoples. … There is no other choice.”    She repeatedly claims that it’s been Palestinians who have stood in the way of any kind of permanent peace.  She cannot acknowledge, however, the historical events that have led to the present situation, which clearly show that the primary obstacle to a two-state solution is not any Palestinian faction: It’s the government of Israel.

Israel had, in collaboration with Egypt, imposed a brutal blockade on Gaza since 2007. Blockades are arguably acts of war, and one place you can find it argued is on the website of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs: “The blockade is by definition an act of war, imposed and enforced through violence. Never in history have blockade and peace existed side by side.”

In the years leading up to Operation Pillar of Defense, Hamas leaders said over and over that they were willing, at a minimum, to accept a long-term truce with Israel. Even the U.S. Institute for Peace, a think tank funded by federal government, acknowledged that Hamas had “sent repeated signals that it may be ready to begin a process of coexisting with Israel.”    This did not interest the Israeli government. On November 14, 2012, Israel assassinated Ahmed Jabari, the head of Hamas’s military wing.     Gershon Baskin, an Israeli peace activist, had been in communication with Jabari long before the assassination. According to Baskin, Jabari had come to believe that it was in the best interest of Palestinians for Hamas to negotiate a long-term truce.

Israel launched Operation Protective Edge, another bombing and invasion of Gaza, on July 8.   Several days later, Hamas proposed a 10-year ceasefire, on the condition that Israel would release the Palestinian prisoners, and the blockades of Gaza in the Mediterranean Sea and along its border with Egypt would be lifted. Israel studiously ignored this proposal and went on to kill over 2,000 people in Gaza, about two-thirds of whom were civilians. Seventy-two Israelis died during the operation, nearly all of them soldiers.   https://theintercept.com/2023/11/17/hillary-clinton-hamas-israel/ 2023-11-08 Hillary Clinton: Israel, Palestinians Need New Leadership for Peace       “I think there needs to be new leadership of the Israelis and the Palestinians in order to have any chance at some kind of peace deal, especially a two-state solution.” Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton talks about the Israel-Hamas war. She speaks with John Micklethwait via video conference for the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in Singapore. (Excerpt)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iorNGSeazk

Hamas Military Attack Not Terrorism

Hamas Military Attack Not Terrorism

Updated 2023-12-31

2023-12-06 Freed Israeli Hostages TEAR INTO Netanyahu For Incompetence In Leaked Audio       Freed Israeli hostages are furious at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his handling of their captivity. Ana Kasparian discusses on The Young Turks.   Freed hostage says Israel bombing terrorized them and caused injuries to some hostages and that IDF helicopter fired on them as they were taken to Gaza on Oct 7. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAixhJUi4AU

2023-12-04 Israeli Peace Activists Face Reckoning After Hamas Attack [MEK Note: IDF probably killed most of the people in the Kibbutz.  Maybe those “progressive” Kibbutz were the reason the IDF didn’t care about them alive or as hostages!]

The Oct. 7 attacks that Israeli authorities say killed more than 1,200 people, mostly civilians, are prompting a reckoning in parts of southern Israel that bore the brunt of the violence, and that for decades have been home to scores of activists who sought to promote coexistence and greater rights for Palestinians.   The region, home to many collective communities known as kibbutzim, has also been far more supportive of pursuing negotiations for a two-state solution with Palestinians than the rest of Israeli society, which has moved sharply to the right since the failure of peace talks more than two decades ago.

In Nir Oz, Be’eri and Kfar Aza—three of the kibbutzim that were among the hardest hit in the Hamas attacks—right-wing parties garnered on average less than 10% of the vote in last year’s elections, which resulted in what analysts consider the most right-wing, religious and ultranationalist government in Israel’s history. Among Israelis who identified as left-wing, 83% were in favor of a two-state solution, in contrast with 16% on the right, according to a recent poll.

“The kibbutzim were bastions of the left. You’ll find in the kibbutzim people who went out of their way to cooperate with Arabs,” said Benny Morris, a historian of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “I fear that Oct. 7, with the mass killing of civilians, has further undermined the left in Israel.”  https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/israeli-peace-activists-face-reckoning-after-hamas-attack/ar-AA1kWXw5

2023-11-25 Israeli child “burned completely” by Israeli tank fire at kibbutz   [MEK Note: Ret entire article]  An Israeli child completely incinerated at Kibbutz Be’eri was killed by two tank shells shot by Israeli forces at the end of an hours-long gun battle, a survivor of the same carnage told the Israeli state broadcaster Kan earlier this month.]

Yasmin Porat, taken captive with at least a dozen other Israeli civilians on 7 October, told Kan radio that a fellow captive, 12-year-old Liel Hatsroni, survived to the end of the battle and only died when Israeli forces fired two tank shells at the house where they were held hostage by Hamas fighters.  Hatsroni’s obliteration by Israeli tank fire emerged this month after her family decided to mourn her with a public funeral, even though the government had not officially pronounced her dead.

Although Hatsroni’s 69-year-old grandfather Aviyah and twin brother Yanai were buried two weeks after their deaths on 7 October, her 73-year-old aunt and guardian Ayala was only buried on 15 November, the day after Israel officially declared her dead.  On that day the Hatsroni family also held funeral rites for Liel, though the state still listed her as missing because “to this day they have not found any of her remains,” Yasmin Porat told Kan on 15 November.      https://electronicintifada.net/content/israeli-child-burned-completely-israeli-tank-fire-kibbutz/41706,    https://progressiveissuesblog.com/2023/11/27/2023-11-25-israeli-child-burned-completely-by-israeli-tank-fire-at-kibbutz/

2023-11-24 U.S. Marine Makes Undeniable Case For Hamas!    Former United States Marine Kenneth O’Keefe has become an outspoken critic of Israeli policy toward Palestine, announcing that if he were Palestinian he would likely fight back against the occupation by any means necessary. In a clip dating from more than 10 years ago O’Keefe even compares Hamas to the African National Congress and Nelson Mandela.   Jimmy and Americans’ Comedian Kurt Metzger discuss efforts by certain non-profit groups to label O’Keefe an anti-semite.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kuRZ2FcRaU

2023-11-22 The evidence Israel killed its own citizens on 7 October    Army major admits Israel killed Israeli civilians.   On Saturday, it was revealed that an official Israel source had concluded for the first time that Israeli fire hit at least some Israelis.   This growing body of evidence undermines the official Israeli narrative of savage Palestinian terrorists invading Israel bent on slaughtering civilians. Hamas maintains that its targets were military and that it did not intentionally kill civilians.

The Israeli officer’s admission came in a series of videos about 7 October posted by Legacy Conversations, an obscure YouTube channel run by military and police veterans of South Africa’s apartheid regime.   In a video posted only one week after 7 October, Major Graeme said that Israeli detainees in Palestinian custody were “possibly killed by Israeli airstrikes when the Israeli Air Force attacked vehicles that were returning into Gaza.”https://asawinstanley.substack.com/p/the-evidence-israel-killed-its-own

2023-11-21 US OK’s Bombing Children as Hamas Fights for Their Freedom from Illegal Israeli Military Occupation   Israel maintains an illegal air, sea and land blockade on Gaza, not allowing anyone, including children, to escape being bombed to death.  The US government, providing Israel with warplanes, missiles, weapons,  ammunition and political and diplomatic backing,  is complicit in this ongoing genocide of bombing to death thousands of militarily confined civilians, mostly women and children .  The Israeli government claims the right to bomb its illegally occupied and captive Palestinians and kill all the members of their Hamas government.

As to Israel’s using the Israelis killed in the Hamas Oct 7th attack to justify the Israeli response of murdering already 12, 500 Palestinian civilians, resent investigations find that a large fraction of the bodies recovered had been charred beyond all recognition, making it very difficult to distinguish between Israelis and Hamas attackers. Since the Hamas fighters had only been carrying rifles and other small arms, all those victims must have been killed by explosive tank shells and Hellfire missiles. Indeed, newly released video footage revealed that hundreds of Israeli cars had been incinerated by such munitions, suggesting that many or most of the Israelis killed fleeing the dance festival had probably died at the hands of trigger-happy Apache pilots, who reported that they had blasted anything that moved. https://countercurrents.org/2023/11/us-oks-bombing-children-as-hamas-fights-for-their-freedom-from-illegal-israeli-military-occupation/

2023-11-19 IDF combat helicopter targeting Hamas fighters at Nova festival massacre shot some partygoers by mistake, says Haaretz    An Israeli police investigation into the music-festival massacre on October 7 indicates that the IDF mistakenly shot some festival attendees while firing at Hamas, a report suggested.   The alleged debacle was reported by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, citing an unnamed police source.   The source told Haaretz that their police investigation said an IDF combat helicopter fired at Hamas fighters after arriving on the scene. While targeting the perpetrators, the helicopter also hit some festivalgoers, the source said.

After Haaretz published its report, Israel Police released a statement pushing back. It said, per The Times of Israel, that the actions of the IDF were beyond the remit of the investigation the source was speaking about.   It also asked that media outlets only report information from government officials.

364 people were killed at the festival, a third of the fatalities from Hamas militants’ coordinated terrorist attacks on Israel on October 7, per The Times of Israel.   Israeli security’s assessment is that Hamas did not have advance knowledge of the Nova music festival next to Kibbutz Re’im, and targeted it spontaneously after infiltrating Gaza’s border, Haaretz reported.  https://www.businessinsider.com/idf-mistakenly-hit-festival-attendees-while-targeting-hamas?

2023-11-13 The October 7 Hamas Assault on Israel   The Most Successful Military Raid of this Century.    Israel has characterized the attack carried out by Hamas on the various Israeli military bases and militarized settlements, or Kibbutz, which in their totality comprised an important part of the Gaza barrier system, as a massive act of terrorism, likening it to the September 11, 2001 terror attacks against the United States. Israel supports this characterization by citing the number of persons killed (some 1,200, a downward revision issued by Israel after realizing that 200 of the dead were Palestinian fighters) and detailing a wide variety of atrocities it claims were perpetrated by Hamas, including mass rape, the beheading of children, and the wonton murder of unarmed Israeli civilians.

The problem with the Israeli claims is that they are demonstrably false or misleading. Nearly a third of the Israeli casualties consisted of military, security, and police officers. Moreover, it turns out that the number one killer of Israelis on October 7 wasn’t Hamas or other Palestinian factions, but the Israeli military itself. Recently released video shows Israeli Apache helicopters indiscriminately firing on Israeli civilians trying to flee the Supernova Sukkot Gathering held in the open desert near Kibbutz Re’im, the pilots unable to distinguish between the civilians and the Hamas fighters. Many of the vehicles that the Israeli government has shown as an example of Hamas perfidy were destroyed by the Israeli Apache helicopters.

Likewise, the Israeli government has widely publicized what it is calling the “Re’im massacre,” citing a death toll of some 112 civilians it claims were murdered by Hamas. However, eyewitness accounts from both surviving Israeli civilians and military personnel involved in the fighting show that the vast majority of those killed died from fire from Israeli soldiers and tanks directed at buildings where the civilians were either hiding or being held hostage by Hamas fighters. It took two days for the Israeli military to recapture Re’im. It only did so after tanks fired into the civilian residences, collapsing them onto their occupants, and often setting them ablaze, causing the bodies of those inside to be consumed by fire. The Israeli government has publicized how it has had to make use of the services of forensic archeologists to identify human remains at the Kibbutz, implying that Hamas had burned the occupants’ home. But the fact is it was Israeli tanks that did the destruction and killing.   https://www.scottritterextra.com/p/the-october-7-hamas-assault-on-israel

2023-10-31 THE LABYRINTH WAR   Hamas still holds more than 230 Israeli hostages it seized on that murderous Saturday, when scarcely any Israeli forces appeared on the scene for as long as ten hours.

The Israeli death count for the Hamas attack of October 7 now stands at 1,400 and includes 317 members of the Israeli military—some of those victims may be military contractors—and 58 policemen. At least thirty Americans, according to the State Department, many of them working for NGOs, were also killed, and thirteen Americans are still unaccounted for. Dozens of those captured by Hamas—among them the very young and the very old—never made it to its tunnel system because they fell or, more likely, were flung off the bicycles or motorcycles that were carrying them and were immediately executed.

The Hamas tunnels “were dazzling in their ingenuity,” I was told by an official who helped Israel map the tunnels and come to grips with the threat posed by easy citywide access for Hamas fighters. “There were administrative tunnels, command-and-control tunnels, and storage tunnels throughout Gaza City.” he said, with hundreds of entry points. It was decided after the October 7 attack that “all buildings with terminal exits and entry points had to be bombed.”

The amount of dirt and debris removed for the underground construction in Gaza City, the official said, was estimated to amount to 75 million cubic feet—a total whose disposal would require 140,000 dumpsters. The official used an analogy to describe the project, which was closely monitored for years by outside experts working with Israeli intelligence: enough material was removed to build the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt.

In my recent reporting, I’ve been told that at the time of the October raid as many as 15,000 to 20,000 fighters were living and training in the vast system, which included heat, light, and ventilation, even air-conditioning. The citywide access made it possible for many to come and go to their families in Gaza City.

The many thousands of Gazan workers who held jobs inside Israel are now understood by Israeli intelligence to have provided the Hamas planners with a core of data and photographs, many sent on mobile phones via WhatsApp, about the Israeli kibbutzim and local villages that were attacked on October 7

2023-10-24 What really happened on 7th October?  [MEK Note: Recommend reading full article]  Evidence is now emerging that up to half the Israelis killed were combatants; that Israeli forces were responsible for some of their own civilian deaths; and that Tel Aviv disseminated false ‘Hamas atrocities’ stories to justify its devastating air assault on Palestinian civilians in Gaza.

In the interim, two weeks of blanket western media reporting that Hamas allegedly killed around 1,400 Israeli civilians during its 7 October military attack has served to inflame emotions and create the climate for Israel’s unconstrained destruction of the Gaza Strip and its civilian population.   Accounts of the Israeli death toll have been filtered and shaped to suggest that a wholesale civilian massacre occurred that day, with babies, children, and women the main targets of a terror attack.

Now, detailed statistics on the casualties released by the Israeli daily Haaretz paint a starkly different picture. As of 23 October, the news outlet has released information on 683 Israelis killed during the Hamas-led offensive, including their names and locations of their deaths on 7 October.  Of these, 331 casualties – or 48.4 percent – have been confirmed to be soldiers and police officers, many of them female. Another 13 are described as rescue service members, and the remaining 339 are ostensibly considered to be civilians.   https://new.thecradle.co/articles/what-really-happened-on-7th-october,  https://progressiveissuesblog.com/2023/11/25/2023-10-24-what-really-happened-on-7th-october/

2023-10-24 THE MYSTERIES OF OCTOBER 7      We in the media do not know the full story. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is saying nothing about Israel’s failure to defend its citizens, although a number of leading generals have publicly apologized for their lapse, and Hamas has insisted that the mission it authorized was solely aimed at the capture of a few Israeli soldiers to be used for a possible prisoner exchange. Hamas operatives began the operation early on the morning of October 7 by blowing up the unguarded fences separating Gaza from Israel.

Hamas also has claimed that the bulk of the mayhem was caused by other terrorist groups and the aggrieved citizens of Gaza who flooded across the downed gates and fences, with no Israeli soldiers to stop them. It has been widely reported that Israel, at the instigation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was financing Hamas, via funds supplied by Qatar, in the belief that a strong Hamas would make a two-state solution, long sought by some in Washington, unlikely.

A well informed American official told me that the Israeli leadership is known to be considering flooding Hamas’s vast tunnel system before sending in its troops, many of whom have had only a few weeks of training in the maneuvers and coordination required for the invasion. Such an act could mean that Israel was prepared to write off the hostages still in jeopardy.    Where the estimated two hundred-plus hostages are is an open question. Israel is only talking about the end of the Hamas regime, and Hamas has so far released four hostages. Two elderly Israelis were released yesterday, with no known demands.

One serious complication that has not been publicly discussed since the October 7 attack is that the Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, were not the sole attackers or collectors of hostages on a day in which there was no Israeli Army presence in the kibbutzim and villages under attack for at least eight hours.

“Was the attack a surprise to the Hamas civilian leadership? No. It was long in the planning and coordinated. The other crazies with a history of terrorism were enlisted to join forces. Did they expect success? No. Did the attacking force commit egregious atrocities? Yes. Was it unanticipated by Hamas? No. All involved proclaimed their intention and proved it in their tactics over the past twenty years. Will Israel react and destroy Hamas? Yes. Are they justified? Was the creation of a Jewish state justified? One person’s answer to the second question answers the first.” He went on: “Will the refugees die of starvation? No. Public sympathy for their genuine suffering will save the day.”

“The goal of the Palestinian operation,” he told me, “was exactly what happened—a shocking and inspired military operation that humiliated the Israelis and shook them to their foundation. Hamas military commanders had a map of bases [inside Israel] and wanted to take computer servers with all of the potentially compromising information they contained and would probably have sent them to Iran for analysis.”   Another Hamas goal, I was told, was to take Israeli Army prisoners and force Israel to trade for the release of thousands of Gazan and West Bank prisoners, break the siege of Gaza, and continue to compete with the Palestine Liberation Organization that was initially designated by the 1993 Oslo Accords to control the West Bank and Gaza. “A further bonus of a successful attack,” the expert said, “would have been to stifle the ongoing normalization talks between Saudi Arabia and Israel.”  https://seymourhersh.substack.com/p/the-mysteries-of-october-7

Disinformation

Disinformation

Updated 2023-12-01

[MEK Note: Disinformation is nor just a social media problem, as governments and corporate media often engage actively and deliberately in bias, distortions, omissions and downright lies!]

2023-11-27 Narrative warfare: How disinformation shapes the Israeli-Hamas conflict—and millions of minds     The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a perennial, deeply entrenched issue transcending mere geopolitics. It is a contest of narratives, a battle where stories and perceptions wield as much power as physical forces. In this intricate struggle, disinformation emerges as a potent weapon skillfully wielded by those with ill intentions. A single Tweet or a brief TikTok video is insufficient to distill decades, if not centuries, of historical background, yet they possess the capacity to shape the minds of individuals, influence their reactions, and even sway policymaking. As such, an examination of how to address rampant misleading information that is shaping the dynamics of human society is necessary.

Nobody is safe. Regardless of one’s stance in this enduring conflict, dominant narratives are often handed down from generation to generation. The remarkable ability of these narratives to mold public opinion attests to their formidable potency. Disinformation becomes a valuable instrument in developing these entrenched perspectives, revealing the vulnerability of individuals when confronted with a barrage of misleading or outright fake information. Notably, even prominent figures with access to vast resources—journalists, politicians, and ironically, CEOs of social media companies—can fall prey to the insidious influence of disinformation.

As technology, including artificial intelligence, intertwines with the Gaza conflict, the promise of a tech utopia is tested against the stark reality of disinformation’s harmful consequences.

The ongoing crisis in the Middle East exposes the limitations and potential harms of the tech world’s overstated promises once again. The rapid spread of disinformation on social media platforms erodes knowledge and undermines trust in information sources, including governments. The dangers of disinformation extend beyond misinformation; it can lead to cynical perspectives, demoralizing individuals and fostering apathy toward problem-solving. https://thebulletin.org/2023/11/narrative-warfare-how-disinformation-shapes-the-israeli-hamas-conflict-and-millions-of-minds/?

2023-11-24 Pro-Palestinian Voices Are Not Disinformation     Young people and foreign nations calling for an end to Israel’s brutality are breaking through the U.S. bipartisan effort to maintain Israel’s legitimacy, causing officials and the media to lash out with flimsy evidence.

As the bombardment of Gaza by the Israeli government continues, with over 10,000 killed, including thousands of children, the U.S. and other nations backing the violence are struggling to maintain widespread legitimacy. Protests continue, cease-fire statements by high-profile individuals and organizations continue, and international calls for an end to the madness continue. Yet U.S. politicians and supportive media corporations also continue to deny that they are wrong, manufacturing new lies to justify their complicity in horrific crimes.

One of the most recent attempts at denying the growing consensus in support of Palestine in the U.S. is to call it a result of people on social media (particularly young people) being tricked by foreign propaganda. A bipartisan group of politicians, media pundits, and think tanks have begun arguing that support for Palestine is built on fake news and disinformation; that millions are being manipulated by China, Russia, Iran, or Hamas. In reality, their expert sources claiming to have identified disinformation campaigns are relying on flawed analyses. Their claims of disinformation are simply cases of speech they do not like because it points out hypocrisy, legacies of violence, and morally corrupt politics. As has been the case before, “disinformation” is being weaponized to cover actual manipulation—that of mainstream media and U.S. government officials justifying genocide.    https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/pro-palestine-not-disinformation

Community Governments Speak Out

Community Governments Speak Out

Updated 2023-12-01

2023-11-22 Video Report: City Council in Cambridge, Mass., Fails to Pass Resolution Calling for Gaza Ceasefire   In Massachusetts, the Cambridge City Council has rejected a resolution calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. On Monday, the resolution failed after just two councilmembers voted “yes” and the remainder voted “present.” The vote came after members of the public lined up for over three hours to speak — most of them in favor of a ceasefire. And it followed a candlelight vigil outside Cambridge City Hall, where protesters read the names of Palestinian victims of Israel’s assault. Democracy Now!’s Hany Massoud filed this report from Cambridge, Massachusetts.  https://www.democracynow.org/2023/11/22/video_report_city_council_in_cambridge

2023-11-24 Barcelona City Council Suspends Ties With Israel Over Gaza Slaughter    The city council of Barcelona, Spain’s second-largest city, voted Friday to suspend relations with Israel’s far-right government over what the party behind the move called the “genocide” in Gaza.   Introduced by the leftist Barcelona en Comú party—which asserted that “no government can turn a blind eye to a genocide”—the resolution demands the municipal government discontinue “institutional relations with the current government of Israel until there is a definitive cease-fire, and respect for the basic rights of the Palestinian people and compliance with United Nations resolutions are guaranteed.”

The resolution also calls for requiring public contracts to ensure that “no operator belongs to or carries out” activities “that go against international humanitarian law” and “rejects and condemns attacks against the population civilian, both Israeli and Palestinian, as well as any action constituting collective punishment, such as the forced displacement of population, the systematic destruction of homes and civilian infrastructure, or the blocking of the supply of energy, water, food, medical supplies and medicines to the population of the Gaza Strip.”

In addition to the Barcelona councilmembers who voted Friday for the resolution, other Spanish officials have also called for cutting ties with Israel’s government over its Gaza onslaught.    Last month, outgoing Social Rights Minister Ione Belarra, who also leads the leftist Podemos party, urged her country’s coalition government to petition the International Criminal Court to open a war crimes investigation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for Israel’s indiscriminate bombardment of Gaza and for cutting off food, fuel, and electricity from the besieged strip’s 2.3 million residents.  https://www.commondreams.org/news/barcelona-israel

2023-11-22 Detroit City Council passes ceasefire resolution      In a strongly worded resolution, the City Council here called for an “immediate, durable, and sustained ceasefire” to “protect and save human lives.” The action on Tuesday followed weeks of organizing, attending council meetings, phone-calling, and letter-writing by peace activists to pressure elected city council representatives.  The resolution states that the Council “condemns all acts of violence aimed at Israeli and Palestinian civilians and mourns the loss of all civilian lives and hostages” and that the Council recognizes that “a lasting resolution can only be achieved by peaceful means and diplomacy.” It goes on to call for the release of hostages and unconditional passage of critical humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Detroit’s ceasefire resolution comes on the heels of similar resolutions passed in Dearborn and Hamtramck. Those Michigan cities, along with Ypsilanti, are home to the largest Arab American population in the state. Detroit is the largest in a growing list of U.S. cities that have called for a ceasefire via city council resolution. Other cities which have passed ceasefire resolutions include Atlanta; Providence, Rhode Island; Akron, Ohio; Richmond, California; and Wilmington, Delaware.

Councilwoman Santiago-Romero explained that she is “focused on a solution,” and that is “the immediate cease-fire and release of all hostages, and allowing for the unrestricted flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza.” The resolution, she said, is “calling that all parties work toward peace.”  https://weknowwhatsup.blogspot.com/2023/11/detroit-city-council-passes-ceasefire.html

2023-08-11 How liberal comedians became lap dogs for establishment power w/Lee Camp | The Chris Hedges Report   The fusion of politics, news, and entertainment has given prominence to comics like Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers, and Bill Maher, who serve as attack dogs for the Democratic Party, which has joined forces with the establishment wing of the old Republican Party against Donald Trump and his supporters. By belittling Trump and his followers, these comics feed the smug, self-righteousness of the ruling establishment, bolstering their sense of moral and intellectual superiority. All the while, they remain comfortably constrained by the corporations and advertisers that employ them. They function as court jesters, never questioning the right of the rulers to rule or the terrible social injustices built into a rigged system. They serve as attack dogs for establishment power, directing their comedic barbs at critics of the system, even if these critics come from the left. Comedian and political commentator Lee Camp joins The Chris Hedges Report to discuss the transformation of comedy from an art form rooted in the counterculture to one that has largely become a megaphone for power.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9sx0PWSe5w&t=1079s

A Rallying Cry for Children in Crisis: War Child’s Global Mission     https://www.globalheroes.com/a-rallying-cry-for-children-in-crisis-war-childs-global-mission/

2024-08-05 ‘Beyond Horror’: Israel Kills Mostly Children in Fresh Attacks on Gaza Schools       “Remember that each one of those numbers is one person, a child who has been forever changed by what’s happened.”      Israeli forces killed dozens of displaced Palestinians—mostly children—on Sunday with attacks on a pair of United Nations-run schools in the Gaza Strip as diplomats in the region worked to prevent all-out war from breaking out in the aftermath of Israel’s latest assassination spree.

Al Jazeera reported that 80% of the roughly 30 people killed in the Israeli attacks on two schools in Gaza City were children. The strikes came shortly after Israel’s military bombed a hospital complex in central Gaza, killing at least five people.   “This is beyond horror now,” David Shoebridge, an Australian senator, wrote in response to the attacks on schools-turned-shelters.https://www.commondreams.org/news/israel-bombs-gaza-schools

2024-07-25 Gaza Newborn Saved From Womb of Mother Killed in Israeli Airstrike     Malek Yassin was born into the hell that is Gaza during the 293 days of relentless Israeli bombings and blockade that have claimed the lives of more than 16,000 Palestinian children.    https://www.commondreams.org/news/gaza-newborn-rescued

2024-07-22 UNICEF Reports Israel Is Killing Kids at Shocking Rates Amid West Bank Assault    Three days after the International Court of Justice issued an advisory opinion stating that Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza is unlawful, the United Nations children’s rights agency said that after decades of being “exposed to horrific violence,” the number of children who have been killed in the West Bank since last October has skyrocketed.

Since Israel began its bombardment of the Palestinian territories nearly 10 months ago — with Gaza the primary target of Israel Defense Forces (IDF) attacks, but with West Bank communities also subjected to raids and other violence — 143 Palestinian children have been killed in the West Bank, according to the U.N. Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

The number represents a 250% increase compared to the nine months preceding the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel, after which the IDF began retaliating in the occupied territories. https://truthout.org/articles/unicef-reports-israel-is-killing-kids-at-shocking-rates-amid-west-bank-assault/

2024-06-13 Amid Cease-Fire Talk, Israel’s Siege Still Causing Child Starvation in Gaza    “Blocking humanitarian aid and creating the conditions for famine is not only an act of extreme cruelty—using starvation as an act of war,” U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders said. “It is a war crime.”

The United Nations relief agency for Palestinians said Thursday that Israeli authorities continue to hinder aid efforts by failing to approve requests for delivery and permits, as two other U.N. agencies separately issued dire warnings about large-scale starvation in Gaza this week.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said Israel has frequently denied the agency’s aid-related requests, The Guardian reported. The World Health Organization said Thursday that there have been 32 cases of deaths from malnutrition in Gaza—mostly of children below five years old—since October 7 and warned of the “catastrophic hunger and famine-like conditions” faced by a significant proportion of Gazans.

The WHO statement followed a U.N. Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warning that humanitarian access in southern Gaza had “declined dramatically” and that 3,000 malnourished children there are “at risk of death,” having been cut off from life-saving care due to the Israeli military offensive in Rafah. Many international agencies and humanitarian groups have gone further in their condemnation of Israeli’s aid policy, arguing that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is using starvation as a weapon of war  https://www.commondreams.org/news/israel-blocks-aid-gaza

2024-06-07 ‘Historic, But So, So Late’: Israel Added to UN’s Child-Killing ‘List of Shame’      “It took a genocide that killed 15,000 children and maimed and scarred thousands more but the U.N. has finally and rightly added Israel to its List of Shame,” said one Palestinian observer.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres informed Israel on Friday that, for the first time, it is being added to the so-called “List of Shame” of countries that kill and injure children during wars and other armed conflicts, a decision that infuriated Israeli officials but was welcomed by human rights defenders as long overdue.

The Secretary-General Office’s annual Children and Armed Conflict report—which is likely to be released publicly later this month—has included countries and militant groups such as Afghanistan, al-Qaeda, Boko Haram, Iraq, Islamic State, Myanmar, Russia, Somalia, Syria, and Yemen. This is believed to be the first time the list has included a nation hailed by Western governments as a democracy.

More children were killed in Gaza in the first four months of the war than in four years of conflict worldwide, in what Philippe Lazzarini, who heads the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, called a “war on children… their childhood, and their future.”

There are also tens of thousands of children among the more than 83,000 Palestinians wounded by Israeli bombs and bullets in Gaza. Hundreds of thousands of children have been forcibly displaced by Israel’s bombardment and invasion, but there’s no safe place for them to go. https://www.commondreams.org/news/israel-killing-children-2668478068

2024-06-07 As Gaza Starves, Israeli Minister Ben-Gvir Calls to Reduce Humanitarian Aid  The national security minister’s comments came as the number of Palestinian children who have died of malnutrition reached at least 30.

Humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza remained almost entirely halted by Israeli forces on Friday, but Israel’s national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, suggested he was dissatisfied with the mounting death toll from starvation and called for a complete blockade to be resumed.

“In our opinion Israel should withhold fuel from Gaza and reduce the humanitarian [aid] that enters,” Ben-Gvir said on social media, adding that he would not support a cease-fire deal put forward by Israel because it “would endanger the future of the state of Israel.”

Ben-Gvir’s comments came as just two crossings into Gaza were open—the Western Erez crossing from Israel into the northern part of the enclave and the Karem Abu Salem crossing, which has had “limited functionality” since May 8.  In recent days the number of aid trucks that have entered through the Karem Abu Salem crossing has plummeted from nearly 200 per day in early May to fewer than 50 per day, with as few as just one truck per day entering since mid-May. https://www.commondreams.org/news/ben-gvir-2668477326

2024-05-01 Gaza Child Amputees Struggle to Recover Amid Israeli Destruction of Health System    Thousands of Palestinian children who have lost limbs and suffered other debilitating injuries to Israeli bombs and bullets are struggling to recover due to the destruction of Gaza’s healthcare infrastructure and a lack of adequate treatment, medication, and equipment like wheelchairs, Save the Children said Tuesday.

The London-based international charity recently published an analysis concluding that “the rate of attacks on healthcare in Gaza has been higher than in any other recent conflict globally.” The group cited figures from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), which found that more than 1,000 Gazan children had one or both legs amputated during just the first month of Israel’s 208-day assault on the besieged coastal enclave. Many more children—the exact number is unknown—have had limbs amputated since then in what UNICEF called “the world’s most dangerous place to be a child.”

“Our pediatric staff say they are seeing lots of children with injuries caused by explosive weapons who are suffering unimaginable physical and mental harm,” Xavier Joubert, Save the Children’s country director for Palestine, said in a statement Tuesday.   https://www.commondreams.org/news/gaza-child-amputees

2024-04-20 The Palestinians Are the Latest Victims of Empire to Be Dehumanized as ‘Others’     Throughout history, military empires have reduced their victims, their subjugated, and their abducted to a state of “The Others.” The political and mass media institutions usually follow suit by supporting their empire’s predatory policies with slanted coverage.  Such is the case with the U.S. global and the Israeli regional empires. The U.S. federal government and the mainstream media often move in lockstep.

Apart from a massively greater overall civilian toll inflicted on Palestinians in Gaza—the vast undercount stands at 34,000 Palestinian deaths compared to the deaths of 1,139 Israeli civilians, soldiers, and foreign workers. This staggering ratio—over 14,000 Palestinian children (with many thousands under the rubble) compared to 30 Israeli children—escapes proper reporting. “The Others” don’t get accurate coverage as was also the case with huge Iraqi losses during the Bush/Cheney criminal war.

The Intercept said Israel’s war on Gaza is “perhaps the deadliest war for children—almost entirely Palestinian—in modern history.” There is scant mention of the word “children” and related terms in the headlines of articles in that span of time.

“The Others” are always described with less charitable words. In a meticulous content analysis by The Intercept of the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, and The Washington Post between October 7 and November 24, the use of the words “slaughtered,” “horrific,” and “massacre” in relation to Israeli and Palestinians killed was 218 to 9!   https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/palestinians-victims-empire-others

2024-03-12 Israeli Genocide Causing ‘Complete Psychological Destruction’ of Gaza Children     In addition to killing, maiming, and forcibly displacing hundreds of thousands of Palestinian children, Israel’s genocidal assault on Gaza has wrought tremendous psychological damage upon kids in the embattled strip, as detailed by a Save the Children report published Tuesday.

The charity’s report—entitled Trapped and Scarred: The Compounding Mental Harm Inflicted on Palestinian Children in Gaza—examines how “five months of violence, displacement, starvation, and disease on top of nearly 17 years of a blockade have caused relentless mental harm to children in Gaza.”

“Children in Gaza were already living with unimaginable distress following 16 years of blockade and successive escalations in violence,” Lee added. “This war and the physical and mental scars it is leaving on children is further eroding their resilience.”  https://www.commondreams.org/news/gaza-children

2024-02-26 Crimes against Humanity. The Eradication of Palestinian Children: “Ten Little Palestinians and Then There Were None    The original invading colonists of the New World, in the budding new countries of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States and rest of the America’s didn’t originally really care a whit how many native children and their elders had to be eradicated, exterminated or obliterated to make way for their own kind. When it comes down to the nub of it, they don’t really care a whit, anymore than the Jewish Zionists, and all their allies in the New and Old World’s, do about how many human beings, young and old alike, must be eradicated – exterminated – obliterated in Gaza and throughout the occupied territories of Palestine for the sake of yet the new conquers and their offsprings greedily-lusting again for yet whatever more desired ultimate power, money, and control. It doesn’t matter how many horrific accounts are still to be revealed of young Palestinian infants, children and teenagers who have had: all their limbs, and even their heads, blown off; died from starvation, malnutrition; treated for life-threatening injuries and diseases without any anesthetics; or left to wallow in the mud, rain, blistering sun in their own feces from the lack of proper housing and sanitation infrastructure.  https://www.globalresearch.ca/ten-little-palestinians-then-there-were-none/5850616

2024-02-04 Israeli Attack on Rafah Kindergarten Leaves Many Dead, Wounded – WAFA    The sources reported casualties, including two young children, and dozens of injuries after Israeli warplanes targeted the kindergarten, which has been used as a refuge for displaced people fleeing the Israeli aggression in other regions of the enclave.   https://www.palestinechronicle.com/israeli-attack-on-rafah-kindergarten-leaves-many-dead-wounded-wafa/https://www.palestinechronicle.com/israeli-attack-on-rafah-kindergarten-leaves-many-dead-wounded-wafa/

2023-12-29 Israeli Killing of West Bank Children Hits ‘Unprecedented Levels’ in 2023       More Palestinian children were killed by Israeli forces in the illegally occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem in 2023 than in any previous recorded year, the United Nations Children’s Fund announced on Thursday.    According to the agency, Israeli occupation forces have killed 124 Palestinian minors in the West Bank and East Jerusalem this year. That’s nearly four times the previous record of 36 children killed there in 2022. UNICEF also said that at least 576 Palestinian children were wounded in the occupied territories this year. https://www.commondreams.org/news/west-bank-children-2666831533

2023-12-18 Israeli Bombing Took 12-Year-Old’s Leg, Her Family, and Finally Her Life      “Dunia’s story is the distillation of the Palestinian child’s experience in Gaza,” said one campaigner. “Displaced, bombed, orphaned, maimed, and finally killed by the Israeli military.”

Among the more than 19,450 people killed in Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip this year is Dunia Abu Mohsen, a 12-year-old who previously lost a leg in an Israeli airstrike and shared the experience in an interview published Monday.  Abu Mohsen was killed on Sunday by an Israeli tank-fired shell that hit al-Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, according to Defense for Children International – Palestine (DCIP), which spoke with the child on-camera last month.  https://www.commondreams.org/news/israel-killing-children-in-gaza

2023-12-09 Over 10,000 infants and children killed in Israel’s Gaza genocide, hundreds of whom are trapped beneath debris   Geneva – Israel has killed more than 10,000 infants and children since the start of its attack on the Gaza Strip on 7 October, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor reported in a statement issued Saturday.

Euro-Med Monitor said that 23,012 Palestinians have been killed so far in the intense Israeli air and artillery attacks on the Gaza Strip, including 9,077 children. As hundreds of additional children remaintrapped under the rubble of destroyed buildings with little chance of survival, the total number of child deaths is likely to exceed 10,000.  According to Euro-Med Monitor figures, roughly 700,000 children have been affected by Israel’s Gaza genocide, a number that includes those who were killed, injured, and internally displaced.

The ongoing Israeli attacks have left over 18,000 Palestinian children injured, with many in critical condition. Dozens more have suffered amputations, and hundreds more have suffered severe burns to various parts of their bodies.  Euro-Med Monitor further estimated that between 24,000 and 25,000 children in the Gaza Strip have lost one or both parents, and approximately 640,000 have had their homes destroyed or damaged, leaving them without a place to live.   https://euromedmonitor.org/en/article/6020/Over-10,000-infants-and-children-killed-in-Israel%E2%80%99s-Gaza-genocide,-hundreds-of-whom-are-trapped-beneath-debris#

2023-01-24 ‘Unchilded’ from birth: UN expert calls for decisive protection of Palestinian children under Israeli rule    Israeli occupation forces kill, maim, orphan and detain hundreds of children in the occupied Palestinian territory every year, a UN expert said today, and their plight has multiplied in recent weeks.

“The oppression and trauma suffered by Palestinian children, half of the Palestinian population under Israeli rule, is a unique stain on the international community,” said Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, in a report to the General Assembly.

The report does not cover the horrific events of 7 October and their aftermath. The expert found that Israel, despite its obligations as an Occupying Power, deprives Palestinians and their children of their basic human rights as part of its efforts to impede the development of Palestinian society and to permanently frustrate the Palestinians’ right to self-determination.

From 2008 until 6 October 2023, 1,434 Palestinian children were reportedly killed, with an additional 32,175 sustaining injuries, primarily at the hands of Israeli occupation forces. Of these, 1,025 children were killed in Gaza alone, since the unlawful blockade began in 2007. During the same timeframe, 25 Israeli children were killed, mostly by Palestinian assailants, and 524 were injured. Between 2019 and 2022, 1,679 Palestinian children and 15 Israeli children sustained lasting physical injuries, leaving many permanently disabled. An average of 500-700 Palestinian children are reported to be detained by Israeli occupation forces each year, with an estimated 13,000 mostly arbitrarily detained, interrogated, tried in military courts and imprisoned since 2000.

“Israel’s framing of Palestinian children as ‘human shields’ or ‘terrorists’ to justify the violence against them and their parents is profoundly dehumanising,” the expert said.    https://www.ohchr.org/en/press-releases/2023/10/unchilded-birth-un-expert-calls-decisive-protection-palestinian-children
