Philadelphi Corridor

Philadelphi Corridor (also see Rafah)

2024-08-25 Egypt demands that Israel give up control of Rafah crossing in first days of possible ceasefire – report      Egypt insists that Israel must relinquish control of the Rafah Border Crossing during the first days of a potential ceasefire, the Saudi-owned Al Hadath outlet reports, quoting unnamed sources.

As the heads of the Mossad and Shin Bet intelligence agencies head to Cairo for talks, Egyptian mediators have been attempting to narrow the gaps between Israel and Hamas and to pressure Israel to phase out the IDF presence along the Philadelphi route. To persuade the terror group to come to an agreement, Egypt has told Hamas that it agrees with its position rejecting any permanent Israeli presence along the border corridor, Al Hadath adds.https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/egypt-demands-that-israel-give-up-control-of-rafah-crossing-in-first-days-of-possible-ceasefire-report/ar-AA1pofMQ?

2024-08-24 Netanyahu in dispute with Israeli negotiators over ceasefire conditions, source says    Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has locked horns with Israeli ceasefire negotiators over his insistence that Israel will not pull out of the so-called Philadelphi Corridor in the south of the Gaza Strip, a person with knowledge of the talks said.

The Philadelphi Corridor, along the border with Egypt, and the Netzarim Corridor cutting across the middle of the Gaza Strip, have been two of the main sticking points in talks backed by Egypt, Qatar and the United States.https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/netanyahu-in-dispute-with-israeli-negotiators-over-ceasefire-conditions-source-says/ar-AA1pmmti?

2024-08-23 Israel offers new proposal for the Philadelphi corridor to Hamas   Egypt is set to deliver Israel’s latest Philadelphi corridor proposal to Hamas after Israel submitted a revised plan on Thursday as efforts to secure a ceasefire deal to halt the fighting in Gaza continue, a diplomat and an Israeli source familiar with the talks said.

The new Israeli proposal, which includes a map of where Israeli troops would be deployed, reduces the number of troops and military posts along the strategic corridor bordering Egypt from Israel’s previous position, the Israeli source said. Egyptian negotiators had rejected the previous Israeli map days earlier and declined to transfer it to Hamas, calling it a non-starter.

The Philadelphi corridor is a 14-kilometer (8.7-mile) strip of land in southern Gaza along the border with Egypt- that the IDF currently controls.

The deployment of Israeli troops along the Philadelphi corridor during the first phase of a ceasefire agreement has been a major point of contention between Israel and Hamas. Israel has demanded maintaining control of the border zone, whereas Hamas has said Israeli troops must withdraw from the area.  https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/israel-offers-new-proposal-for-the-philadelphi-corridor-to-hamas/ar-AA1pk1oY?

Polycrisis

Polycrisis (also see Regional War and Regional & Global Order)

Updated 2024-08-29

2024-08-04 The Gaza War in This Dangerous Era of Polycrisis     The events triggered by the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel show the irrationality, unpredictability, uncontrollability, and folly that human actions have acquired in the era of the polycrisis.

Conflict in the Middle East has been endemic for a very long time. It would not take a global polycrisis to ignite a new round of war and escalation. But the global polycrisis gives the current war in the Middle East some distinctive elements, and conversely what started as the war in Gaza vividly illustrates what the polycrisis means in practice.   https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/gaza-war-polycrisis

People’s Conference on Palestine

People’s Conference on Palestine

Updated 2024-08-28

2024-06-03 People’s Conference for Palestine; Plus Resistance in Residence Artist Biko Eisen-Martin     This week marks eight full months of Israel’s genocide in Gaza. On today’s show, we’ll hear audio from the People’s Conference for Palestine, a gathering that took place on May 24-26 where 3,500 organizers came together to coalesce the movement for Palestinian liberation and to identify next steps. We’ll hear from conference organizers with the Palestinian Youth Movement as well as Vijay Prashad and Wisam Rafeedie. All that and more, coming up, after these headlines.     https://kpfa.org/episode/law-disorder-june-3-2024/

2024-06-03 A REPORT BACK FROM PEOPLE’S CONFERENCE ON PALESTINE W/ JOURNALIST JESSE STRAUSS     Davey D of Hard Knock Radio recently sat down with activist Jesse, producer of the popular KPFA radio show ‘Law and Disorder,’ to discuss his trip to Detroit for the ‘People’s Conference on Palestine.’ Their conversation covered a wide range of topics, including Jesse’s firsthand experiences, the ongoing devastation in Gaza, and the broader movement for Palestinian freedom.

Davey D touched on various subjects, including narcotics, hard work, and the National Academy. He discussed the Republic and Parliament, the arrest of a child, and relationships with the government. There was also a reference to a playground and information about the Law of Ukraine. The conversation concluded with remarks on being close to national guidelines.

Jesse’s People’s Conference Experience.  Jesse shared his experience from attending the People’s Conference for Palestine, highlighting the devastation in Gaza and the need to end the ongoing genocide. He noted a shift in focus towards the Palestinian movement, with increased attention and conversations about the issue. The conference was marked by solidarity and optimism despite challenges. Jesse emphasized the interconnectedness of the Palestinian movement with other justice movements, advocating for divestment from the war machine and universities.

Israel’s Violence and American Culture Impact.   The conversation explored the impact of Israel’s violence on Americans, especially in areas with large Arab populations like Dearborn, Michigan. Jesse discussed pervasive Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian sentiment in American culture. A significant story from the conference was that of Sana Daka, a former Palestinian political prisoner, and her husband, who spent 36 years in Israeli jails.

Emotional Reception for Sana Daqqah and Vijay Prashad.  Jesse described the emotional reception for Sana Daqqah and her daughter at the conference. He highlighted the keynote speech by Vijay Prashad, who asserted that Israel had lost its ideological war and would eventually lose the military one as well.

Discussing Political Prisoners in Palestine.  The discussion focused on the treatment of political prisoners in Palestine, particularly the use of administrative detention by the Israeli military. Jesse highlighted the inhumane conditions faced by detainees and the need for increased awareness of these issues.

Cultural Erasure, History, and Political Polarization.   Participants discussed the intentional destruction of cultural institutions and histories, particularly in the Palestinian context. They shared personal experiences of cultural erasure and emphasized the importance of teaching history to prevent such erasures. The changing political landscape and growing polarization within certain groups were also discussed.

Disrupting the Narrative: Anti-Zionism, Anti-Semitism, and Safety.   Jesse addressed the false narrative equating anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism, arguing for clarity on this issue. He stressed that there is no correlation between being Jewish and the State of Israel, and that Israel does not ensure Jewish safety. Jesse, as an abolitionist and community organizer, drew parallels between the US prison industrial complex and Zionism, advocating for an anti-war and anti-Zionist stance.

War, Protest, and Dissent: Perspectives and Optimism.    The conversation also touched on the impact of war and protest, with Davey D sharing insights on how dissenters are often labeled as unpatriotic. Jesse shared his experiences as a young activist during the post-9/11 anti-war movement, expressing hope and optimism for the movement towards a free Palestine.

The show concluded with opening remarks and keynotes from conference participants Mohammad Nabulsi and Yara Shoufani. https://kpfa.org/page/4/?s=Palestine

2024-08-26 In Chicago’s Little Palestine, locals protest and mourn amid Gaza war    Standing outside his local mosque in suburban Chicago, Robhi Gharallah observed that Israel’s war in Gaza is on everyone’s mind in his neighbourhood.   “We’re praying. We’re protesting. We’re raising funds. We’re doing all we can for Gaza,” Gharallah said after Friday prayer.

But he said Palestinian Americans are facing a dilemma in the next election, with both the Republican candidate Donald Trump and his Democratic rival Kamala Harris showing staunch support for Israel.    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/in-chicago-s-little-palestine-locals-protest-and-mourn-amid-gaza-war/ar-AA1ptQ0L?

Palestine Solidarity  Movement

Palestine Solidarity  Movement

Updated 2024-08-28

2024-08-12 Palestine Has Mobilized a Global Movement. For It to Last We Must Get Organized   In the weeks after October 7, abolitionist and civil rights activist Angela Davis offered some pointed advice to people on the left during an Al Jazeera interview: “If we are not prepared to think critically about what’s happening in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem … we will not only be unprepared to understand and address the issues emanating from the current crisis; we won’t be able to understand the world around us [and] the many struggles for justice and freedom all over the globe.” She went on to add that, “Our relation to Palestine says a great deal about our capacity to respond to complex, contemporary issues, whether we’re talking about imperialism, settler colonialism, transphobia, homophobia, the climate crisis.”https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/palestine-has-mobilized-a-global-movement-for-it-to-last-we-must-get-organized/ar-AA1oF8rf?

2018-08-08 Toward a New Vision for the Palestine Solidarity Movement  May 15th, 2018, referred to as Nakba Day by the Palestinian people, marked the 70th anniversary of the ethnic cleansing of over 700,000 Palestinians from their homeland by what would become the State of Israel. In demonstration against Israel’s ongoing theft of land and systematic genocide of the Palestinian people, the Great March of Return that began on March 30th served as a testament to the native Palestinian peoples’ striving for a future without occupation, a future in which they can determine their own destiny. Israel responded by gunning down hundreds of demonstrators.

This crackdown on the Great March of Return generated international protest, most notably from the football star, Lionel Messi, who refused to compete in an exhibition match with Israel set to take place in a stadium that was built on top of a demolished Palestinian village . However, the violence of Israel was also met with overwhelming support from the United States. On May 14th, as children were being slaughtered by the Israeli state, the United States initiated the move of its embassy to Jerusalem, bringing to fruition the Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995 , which recognized the ancient city as the State of Israel’s capital and set aside funds for the relocation of the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

In light of the United States’ key role in support of the Israeli occupation of Palestine, the Palestine solidarity movement in America has immense potential. Its young organizers possess the determination needed to wage a struggle against the causes of war and poverty, and the moral courage to stand with the world’s oppressed and exploited masses.

However, this movement all too often has divorced itself from the global struggle for peace and, to its own detriment, has yet to confront Zionism for its pivotal role in securing the interests of U.S. imperialism beyond Palestine. This was most notable when the non-profit driven sector of the Palestine solidarity movement aligned with the interests of Israel and threw its support behind Western intervention to overthrow the Syrian government. This came at a moment when the United States was threatening to implement a no-fly zone over Syria, which aimed to provoke war with Russia and had the potential to result in a nuclear catastrophe.   https://blackagendareport.com/toward-new-vision-palestine-solidarity-movement

Omar, Ilhan -Rep of Minnesota

Omar, Ilhan -Rep of Minnesota

Updated 2024-08-28

2024-08-22 “Stop Sending Bombs”: Rep. Ilhan Omar Visits Uncommitted Sit-In & Demands Israeli Arms Embargo    Democracy Now! spoke with Minnesota Congressmember Ilhan Omar late Wednesday outside the Democratic National Convention, where members of the “uncommitted” movement launched a sit-in to demand a Palestinian American be allowed to address the convention from the main stage. Omar said she joined protesters outside the DNC because “there is no compassion in turning our heads away from the piles of dead bodies” in Gaza. “A ceasefire is only possible if we use every leverage that we have, and the biggest leverage that we have is to stop sending bombs,” says Omar, explaining why she is calling for an arms embargo against Israel and an end to “this genocidal war.”   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Zpvz_biIig

Oasis Plan

Oasis Plan (also see One State – Two State)

Updated 2024-08-28

2024-04-13 The Oasis Plan: The LaRouche Solution for Peace Through Development      Today’s conflict in Gaza has come to the point that it stains the collective soul of humanity. Though it is born out of decades of fighting between Israelis and Palestinians, and amidst a swamp of imperial ambitions, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling on Jan. 26 delivered an undeniable verdict: Israel is on the verge of creating a genocide in Gaza. Either an end to this conflict is reached soon, or the words “Never Again,” which were so clearly stated at the end of the Nazi holocaust during the 1940’s, will forever ring hollow.

Therefore, an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza is urgently required. No good will come, either for Palestinians or for Israelis, from a continuation of this conflict. Additionally, steps must be taken toward the implementation of a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine. A solid basis for this already exists in United Nations Resolution 242, adopted November 22, 1967, which calls for the return to the pre-1967 borders. Without these basic steps, this war threatens to not only annihilate the people of Gaza, but to engulf the entire region in war—a situation which could rapidly become a nuclear World War III.  https://laroucheorganization.com/larouche-plan-southwest-asia

1994-04-27 The Oasis Plan: Development Is the Key to Peace in the Middle East     What I proposed—and I had ready acceptance from certain circles in Israel and among some Palestinians and other Arabs—was the following thesis. I stated that the efforts to find a political solution to the Middle East conflict would not succeed under any circumstances, because we had extreme bitterness which could not be settled at the political bargaining table. Before we could have a political solution, we had to have an economic self-interest by both parties in a political solution.

Some Israelis, of the type you would associate today with Shimon Peres, agreed. By early 1976, there was a very significant effort to bring this to success; but because of a very radical shift in politics in Israel at that time, our efforts failed. We tried to revive this again with some sympathy from certain circles in the United States in the later 1978 Carter period. But that failed because forces inside Israel at the time wished it to fail.

There was a brief effort to revive that on the Israeli side, as well as ours, when Shimon Peres was prime minister of Israel. What I believe were some very useful plans were brought to agreement; but we were cut off because of the change in government.

The plan, as you know, has been revived recently on the initiative of Shimon Peres in negotiations with Yasser Arafat. It could succeed; though it is very much in jeopardy.  https://larouchepub.com/lar/2023/5041-the_oasis_plan_development_is-lar.html

Netanyahu – U.S. Right

Netanyahu – U.S. Right (also see Netanyahu Congressional Address)

Updated 2024-08-28

2024-07-24 Despite Protests, Netanyahu Solidifies Support From the Right During US Trip     Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stands accused of war crimes, and the popular political consensus within the U.S. and Israel suggests he is thwarting an attempted ceasefire in the horrifying war on Gaza for his own personal gain. But he received a hero’s welcome this week from the U.S. Republicans who are eager to stoke divisions among Democrats and animate evangelical voters during an election year.

Thousands gathered at the capitol for protests as Netanyahu prepared to address a joint session of Congress on Wednesday, including Palestinian activists and Israelis frustrated with Netanyahu’s failure to end the war and bring the remaining hostages home.

House Speaker Mike Johnson joined Netanyahu for a press conference to reiterate U.S. support for Israel after previously warning that any Democrats or activists who attempt to disrupt the prime minister’s speech would be arrested.  “Our dear ally Israel is in an existential fight for its very existence, and that fight extends to every one of its borders,” Johnson said. https://truthout.org/articles/despite-protests-netanyahu-solidifies-support-from-the-right-during-us-trip/
