Israel Prisoner Release Fraud

Israel Prisoner Release Fraud

Updated 2023-12-08

2023-12-03 I Am Renouncing My Israeli Citizenship. Here’s Why  In 2017, after Israeli forces arrested then-16-year-old Ahed Tamimi (the detention and physical, sexual, and mental abuse of Palestinian children by Israel is not uncommon; they since detained Tamimi again on Nov. 6, though she was freed Nov. 30 as part of a prisoner exchange), I started attending rallies by Within Our Lifetime, where I heard Nerdeen Kiswani talk about citizenship renunciation as a way forward for Israelis—and the idea was seeded in my head. I had been living in New York since 2012, but I was raised in an Israeli-Zionist household, and I cannot put into words the shame I have for my own family’s participation in Zionist violence. While I did not serve in the IDF for medical reasons, I cannot ignore my position as a settler. Like millions of Israelis, I was also kept ignorant by the state and its educational system on purpose. However, once you unlearn Zionist propaganda, there is no going back; the world makes so much more sense, and it feels similar to what I have heard of those who escaped a cult.   https://truthout.org/articles/renouncing-israeli-citizenship/

Israel Playbook

Israel Playbook

Updated 2023-12-08

2012-11-20 Israel-Palestine – what is the U.S. national interest?  Israeli elections are coming up in January so it is Palestinian hunting season again. Israeli cynics call it a time “for mowing the grass.”   Out comes the well-worn playbook by Israel’s militaristic government that has worked to silence Israeli politicians and citizens who want a two-state solution. This is an opportunity to use and test advanced weaponry from the U.S., compliments of U.S. taxpayers, and squelch ongoing peace efforts, small and large, by Palestinians, Israelis and international peace advocates.

The playbook’s first chapter is provocation to upset a tense but workable truce with Hamas, the elected government of Gaza. Hamas was encouraged at its creation years ago by both Israeli and U.S. backers to counter the secular Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). Bit of a blowback there.

Back to Israel’s playbook, chapter two can be called the instant, mandatory resolutions by the puppet show in Congress and the automatic one-sided mantra by the White House. “Israel has a right to defend itself,” said President Obama, from the occupied, besieged, defenseless Palestinians, whose lands, water, homes, businesses and freedom of movement are being taken relentlessly by the raiding Israeli government that is not content with possessing 78 percent of traditional Palestine.

Finally, chapter three of the playbook is to make sure that the Israeli government advocates dominate the U.S. media – the talk shows, the news slants, and the opinion columnists. This is becoming less easy in an internet age. Which might explain that, along with homes, water wells, rescue teams, an ambulance, and other civilian installations, the Israeli air force already has bombed the office building housing Palestinian television studios and hosting media from the western world, including Fox TV. That is one indelicate way to tell these western journalists to get out of Gaza so that the truth about the immense civilian suffering and war crimes can no longer be told by them.   https://nader.org/2012/11/20/israel-palestine-what-is-the-u-s-national-interest/

Israel Oppression of Palestinian People – Pre-Oct 7, 2023

Israel Oppression of Palestinian People – Pre Oct 7,2023

Updated 2024-02-25

2024-02-16 ICJ Hearings to Examine 57 Years of Israeli Occupation of Palestine    More than 50 countries are set to participate in next week’s hearings at the International Court of Justice focusing on Israel’s illegal 57-year occupation of Palestine, a forum that follows the Hague tribunal’s finding last month that Israel is “plausibly” committing genocide in occupied Gaza.

The ICJ—also known as the World Court—will hold a week of hearings on the legal consequences of Israel’s occupation of Palestine, which dates to the Israeli conquest of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, Gaza Strip, Syrian Golan Heights, and Egyptian Sinai Peninsula during the 1967 Six-Day War.

“The International Court of Justice is set for the first time to broadly consider the legal consequences of Israel’s nearly six-decades-long occupation and mistreatment of the Palestinian people,” Human Rights Watch senior legal adviser Clive Baldwin said in a statement. “Governments that are presenting their arguments to the court should seize these landmark hearings to highlight the grave abuses Israeli authorities are committing against Palestinians, including the crimes against humanity of apartheid and persecution.”

The West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Golan Heights remain under Israeli military occupation six decades after their conquest. The United Nations—to which the ICJ belongs—and many international NGOs contend that, despite removing its troops and settlers from Gaza two decades ago, Israel continues to occupy Gaza by controlling the besieged enclave’s airspace, territorial waters, and the entry and exit of people and goods.

Since the October 7 Hamas-led attacks on Israel, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have killed or wounded more than 100,000 Palestinians in Gaza while forcibly displacing around 90% of the population. Numerous Israeli leaders have called for the renewed physical occupation, Jewish resettlement, and ethnic cleansing of the strip.   During the current assault on Gaza, occupation forces have also killed at least 388 Palestinians, including 99 children, in the West Bank, according to U.N. human rights officials.   Israeli settlers have for decades been steadily colonizing the occupied territories under the protection of the IDF, while ethnically cleansing Palestinians whose lands and homes they steal.  https://www.commondreams.org/news/israeli-occupation

2022-08-22 CIA unable to corroborate Israel’s ‘terror’ label for Palestinian rights groups     Exclusive: sources say report shows CIA unable to find evidence to support Israeli claim, but finding does not prompt US rebuttal.    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/aug/22/cia-report-israel-palestinian-rights-groups

2022-08-21 Palestinian rights group chief arrested by Israeli intelligence    Khaled Quzmar, general director of Defense of Children International – Palestine (DCIPalestine), was taken into custody on Sunday by the Shin Bet intelligence agency, according to a tweet from the organization.   Quzmar was not allowed to have legal counsel accompany him.”  It later said that, after two hours in custody, Quzmar was released.

The arrest is just the latest move in a campaign being waged by Israel against a number of Palestinian human rights organizations in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Six rights groups – Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association, Al-Haq, Bisan Center for Research and Development, the Union of Agricultural Work Committees and the Union of Palestinian Women Committees as well as DCIPalestine – were designated as “terrorist organisations” by Israel in October 2021 and since then they have been subjected to increasing scrutiny.  Many of the organisations have received funding from EU countries.

Earlier on Sunday, Al-Haq tweeted that its director had received a threatening phone call from an Israeli intelligence official over its work.  According to Al-Haq, Shawan Jabarin was summoned by the Shin Bet for “interrogation” while the caller made “threats of imprisonment and other measures if Al-Haq continues its work”.   On Friday, Israel raided and forcibly shuttered the rights groups’ offices in the West Bank, with soldiers confiscating items. The offices of the Union of Health Workers Committees, which has not been designated a terrorist organisation, were also raided.

The six groups that have been so designated have denied allegations of “terrorism” and their closure has met with criticism from both the United Nations and human rights organisations.

The foreign ministries of Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden have all said Israel has failed to provide them “substantial information” on the accusations and pledged to continue cooperating with the groups in the absence of any evidence. https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/israel-palestine-rights-group-chief-arrested

2014-07-17 Pounding Gaza – World’s Largest Open-Air Prison   An already troubling humanitarian crisis has intensified with the Israeli bombardment of Gaza, an area about twice the size of the District of Columbia that has about three times as many residents (1.8 million). Israel has been using its highly touted precise missiles to hit numerous targets. This collective punishment, a war crime per se, wreaks havoc on civilians and their life-sustaining infrastructure.

With over 1,700 explosive strikes so far, the Israeli military has pounded homes, schools, mosques, electric and water facilities, municipal buildings, health clinics, moving vehicles, a home for the seriously disabled and even tiny agriculture areas. As a result of these attacks, over two hundred and thirty Gazans have died and over seventeen hundred have been injured so far, about eighty percent are civilians, a majority of whom are women and children, according to UN observers.

That is only part of the continuing war against Gaza. For years, Israel has maintained a siege/blockade, restricting the importation of adequate food, medicine, water, electricity, construction materials and other necessities needed by the refugees in the world’s largest open-air prison. These daily deprivations have taken a deadly toll. Fatalities, sicknesses, untreated cancers have resulted. Half of the children are seriously malnourished due to the dire poverty associated with the Israeli air, land and sea encirclement. (There are even harsh restrictions on Gazan fishermen.)   https://nader.org/2014/07/17/pounding-gaza-worlds-largest-open-air-prison/

Israel – History Taught in Society

Israel – History Taught in Society

Updated 2024-04-03

2024-01-12 How Israel indoctrinates its people w/Miko Peled | The Chris Hedges Report     Three months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza, the atrocities the IDF has committed against Palestinians are too numerous to name. Israel is staging a prolonged assault on the Palestinian people’s very means of existence—destroying homes, hospitals, sanitation infrastructure, food and water sources, schools, and more. To understand the genocidal campaign unfolding before our eyes, we must examine the roots of Israeli society. Israel is a settler colonial state whose existence depends on the elimination of Palestinians. Accordingly, Israel is a deeply militarized society whose citizens are raised in an environment of historical revisionism and indoctrination that whitewashes Israel’s crimes while cultivating a deep-seated racism against Palestinians. Miko Peled, former IDF Special Forces and author of The General’s Son: Journey of an Israeli in Palestine, joins The Chris Hedges Report for a frank conversation on the distortions of history and reality at the foundations of Israeli identity.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CU0Uc-PKe9Y&t=318s

2003-10-00 The ’48 Nakba & The Zionist Quest for its Completion    For Israelis, 1948 is a year in which two things happened which contradict each other: On the one hand, it was the climax of Jewish aspirations to have a state or to fulfill a long dream of returning to a homeland after what they regarded as 2000 years of exile. In other words, it was considered a miraculous event that only positive adjectives could be attached to, and that you could only talk about and remember [it] as a very elated kind of event. On the other hand, it was the worst chapter in Jewish history. Jews did in 1948 in Palestine what Jews had not done anywhere for 2000 years prior. The most evil and most glorious moment converged into one. What Israeli collective memory did was to erase one side of the story in order to co-exist or to live with only the glorious chapter. It was a mechanism for solving an impossible tension between two collective memories.

Because so many of the people who live in Israel lived through 1948, this is not a distant memory. It is not the genocide of the Native Americans in the United States. People know exactly what they did, and they know what others did. Yet they still succeed in erasing it totally from their own memory while struggling rigorously against anyone trying to present the other, unpleasant, story of 1948, in and outside Israel. If you look at Israeli textbooks, curricula, media, and political discourse you see how this chapter in Jewish history—the chapter of expulsion, colonization, massacres, rape, and the burning of villages – is totally absent. It is not there. It is replaced by a chapter of heroism, glorious campaigns and amazing stories of moral courage and superiority unheard of in any other histories of people’s liberation in the 20th century. So whenever I speak of the ethnic cleansing of Palestine in 1948, we must remember that not just the very terms of “ethnic cleansing” and “expulsion” are totally alien to the community and society from which I come and from where I grew up; the very history of that chapter is either distorted in the recollection of people, or totally absent.  https://socialistviewpoint.org/oct_03/oct_03_08.html

Israel Citizenship

Israel Citizenship

Updated 2023-12-08

Myth of Citizenship     By definition Israel’s commitment to  being a Jewish state necessitates codifying discrimination against Palestinian citizens as non-Jews in its laws. Israeli nationality does not exist, but a Jewish nationality – separate from citizenship – does. This means that national-citizens, i.e. Jews, are afforded greater rights under the law than citizens-only, i.e. Palestinians, who face a regime of institutionalized discrimination embodied in more than 50 discriminatory laws. Thus by their very existence, Palestinian citizens of Israel threaten Israel’s Jewish majority and are considered threats to, rather than members of, the state.

Israel’s Jewish citizen majority is not organic: it was artificially created by the expulsion of the Indigenous population and is maintained by denying citizenship to about half the people living under Israel’s control, namely Palestinians under occupation in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and Gaza.

This discrimination dates back to Israel’s founding and the Palestinian Nakba. Between 1948-1967, Israel imposed military rule on its Palestinian citizens, severely limiting their freedom of movement, livelihoods, and expression, while simultaneously passing laws to transfer Palestinian land to state ownership or control, all in all seizing 73% of all Palestinian land.   https://uscpr.org/activist-resource/myth-of-citizenship/

2023-12-03 I Am Renouncing My Israeli Citizenship. Here’s Why.   On Nov. 6, I was supposed to have an appointment at the Israeli consulate in New York to begin my application to renounce my Israeli citizenship. That morning, I finalized a letter of explanation to the Israeli population and Immigration Authority to explain my reasoning. By that time, the apartheid State of Israel, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), and settlers in the West Bank had already committed countless atrocities in the prior several weeks alone, bombing hospitals, schools, and churches, killing and maiming thousands of Palestinians, and displacing thousands more. The genocide we have seen unfolding since Oct. 7 is just one horrifying chapter of the decades of sheer brutality and inhumanity of the Zionist project to colonize Palestine. This is a clear continuation of the Nakba, the theft of Palestinian land, and the ongoing ethnic cleansing and genocide of the Palestinian people since and before 1948.

Since I had always planned on going public about my renunciation and had been working on my letter of explanation, I decided to post it on social media, where it spread widely. Unfortunately for Israel, its most recent genocidal campaign meant the letter received greater visibility. On Nov. 20, I went to the rescheduled appointment only to be denied the chance to submit my application since I do not have the papers to prove I did not serve in the IDF (I do not have access to those). So, this op-ed is a way to further clarify why I chose to take a very public approach to renouncing my citizenship and why I am encouraging others to do so, too. https://truthout.org/articles/renouncing-israeli-citizenship/

Israel Abuse of Prisoners

Israel Abuse of Prisoners

Updated 2024-08-26

2024-08-08 Israeli guard says conditions for Palestinian prisoners ‘made his stomach turn’ | ITV News     An Israeli detention guard turned whistleblower who leaked a photograph of a Palestinian prisoner forced to stand in a stress position has told ITV News that the things he saw “made his stomach turn”.  The guard, who wishes to remain anonymous to protect his identity, said his experiences in the prison would shock “anyone with a conscience.”  ITV News managed to speak to the prisoner in question, who was recently released and has returned to the southern Gaza strip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94Sg5vCHuZQ

2024-07-31 UN Probe Finds ‘Appalling Acts’ of Torture Against Palestinians Detained by Israel   The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on Wednesday released a report detailing torture and abuse of Palestinians at Israeli detention centers, including sexual violence, waterboarding, and the use of dogs.

Israeli security forces have also used electric shocks, burned detainees with cigarettes, and deprived them of food, water, sleep, and toilet access, according to the 23-page OHCHR report, based largely on interviews with released detainees. Some detainees said they were held with their arms suspended from the ceiling; were forced to be naked for prolonged periods, wearing only diapers; and were blindfolded for extended periods.

Israel security forces have arrested thousands of Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza since October, many of them arbitrarily; they held more than 9,400 “security detainees” as of the end of June, often in secret and incommunicado, without providing a reason for the detainment, the report says.

“The testimonies gathered by my office and other entities indicate a range of appalling acts, such as waterboarding and the release of dogs on detainees, amongst other acts, in flagrant violation of international human rights law and international humanitarian law,” U.N. Human Rights chief Volker Türk said in a statement accompanying the report. https://www.commondreams.org/news/israeli-detention-un-report

2024-07-23 Israeli Forces Post Pictures of Stripped Detained Palestinian Children Online      Israeli forces have taken pictures of Palestinian children they have abducted into their torture camps and posted them online with humiliating captions, a report finds as Israel holds thousands of Palestinians in detention without charges.

A Human Rights Watch review of 37 posts on social media published Tuesday finds that Israeli soldiers regularly post pictures of Palestinians abducted from Gaza and the occupied West Bank. Most of the pictures are of men and boys, with many showing them stripped to their underwear or totally naked. The people pictured are often handcuffed, blindfolded and injured, the report says.

One post, published by an Israeli soldier in Gaza on December 8, depicts nearly two dozen detained people, including two who appear to be children. The people are all stripped to their underwear, and some of them are blindfolded. https://truthout.org/articles/israeli-forces-post-pictures-of-stripped-detained-palestinian-children-online/

2024-02-07 War on Gaza: Palestinians packed in intolerably overcrowded cells in Israeli prisons, says report     The Israeli Public Defender’s Office published a report on Tuesday stating that some Israeli prisons have been declared to be in a state of emergency due to severe overcrowding.   According to the report, since the start of the war on 7 October at least 3,400 people have been imprisoned.    The overcrowding has resulted in the violation of the basic rights of people in prison, including many being forced to sleep on the floor.   The report said that the overcrowding has caused people stress and anxiety, which can at times cause unnecessary friction in cells

During a visit by members of the Public Defender’s Office, squalid conditions were noted, including “intolerable overcrowding”, with less than three square metres of space per person; poor sanitary conditions; pest issues; inadequate ventilation, and a lack of basic necessities for the incarcerated.    . https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/war-gaza-palestinians-packed-overcrowded-cells-israel-prisons

2023-12-26 Watchdog Submits Evidence of Israeli Executions of Gaza Civilians to UN, ICC      A prominent European human rights group on Monday submitted a report to the International Criminal Court and United Nations special rapporteurs documenting “dozens of cases of field executions carried out by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip.”

Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor, a Geneva-based nonprofit, requested the ICC and U.N. immediately investigate “the widespread killing operations carried out by Israeli forces targeting Palestinian civilians, especially the field executions and physical liquidations in the Gaza Strip.”

In addition to ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan, Euro-Med Monitor sent copies of its preliminary findings to Maurice Tydball Benz, the U.N. special rapporteur on extrajudicial or arbitrary executions; Francesca Albanese, the special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967; and Navanethem Pillay, head of the Investigative Committee on the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

“Nearly 10 days after the Israeli army began its ground attack in the Gaza Strip on October 27, the Israeli army carried out dozens of executions and direct physical liquidations against civilians as part of its all-out military campaign that started on October 7.

The group’s report lists nine separate instances in which it says Israel Defense Forces (IDF) troops executed Palestinian civilians in Gaza. Victims include multiple elderly couples shot and left to bleed to death after being forced from their homes in Gaza City last week; a mentally ill man shot in his home in the Jabalia refugee camp; six members of the al-Khaldi family shot dead during an Israeli raid on their home; and nine forcibly displaced civilians including women and children who were massacred while seeking shelter in the Shadia Abu Ghazala School near Jabalia on December 13.   “The Israeli soldiers came in and opened fire,” one unidentified witness said of the school attack. “They took all men, then entered classrooms and opened fire on a woman and all the children with her,” including “newborn children.”  “The Israeli soldiers executed those innocent families point-blank,” she added.

In the case of the al-Khaldi family, surviving relative Fahed al-Khaldi toldMiddle East Eye that after an Israeli airstrike on a neighboring home killed several people and wounded Fatima al-Khaldi, his pregnant sister-in-law, IDF ground troops “lobbed two grenades into the house” where about 30 people were sheltering “without regard for women, children, or the elderly.”   “They then opened fire directly at people and in an indiscriminate manner, without differentiating between young and old,” he said.   Five people were killed instantly. Al-Khaldi said Israeli troops ordered the survivors out of the home, where they were stripped of their clothes.   “The soldiers then returned to the room and executed all the injured,” he said. Fatima al-Khaldi was shot and left to bleed to death.

Last week, Euro-Med Monitor reported that more than 1,000 Palestinian elders have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza, including dozens of people over the age of 60 who were executed.  “These incidents included soldiers shooting elderly people immediately after ordering them to evacuate their homes, and in some cases, executing them just moments after their release from hours or days of arbitrary detention,” the group said.

More than 28,000 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the Israeli genocide campaign in the Gaza Strip, a number that includes those who remain trapped under the rubble of destroyed buildings and are now presumed dead. Women and children make up 70% of the recorded victims. Thus, Palestinian deaths constitute the highest rate of civilian casualties worldwide in the 21st century.

The Gaza Health Ministry said Tuesday that the Palestinian death toll from 81 days of near-relentless Israeli attacks was approaching 21,000, with nearly 55,000 others wounded and thousands more missing. More than 1.9 million of the besieged enclave’s 2.3 million people have also been forcibly displaced and face increased risk of starvation, hypothermia, and disease.   https://www.commondreams.org/news/israeli-executions   (also here)

2023-12-11 Displacement, Disease and Death Plague Gazans as Israel Continues Its Genocidal Assault    Israel’s unrelenting assault on the Gaza Strip continues as the death toll has reached 18,000 Palestinians killed in just over two months. Airstrikes rocked the Nuseirat and Maghazi refugee camps in central Gaza overnight. At least 23 people were killed in Maghazi. Airstrikes also struck at least two residential homes in Rafah. Meanwhile, the ground battle is pushing ahead in Khan Younis, which is under heavy bombardment.

Gazan women say Israeli soldiers forced them to leave their husbands and sons behind and flee their Gaza City homes. They spoke from the Al-Aqsa Hospital in central Deir al-Balah where they were taking refuge.

Amnah Abu Zor: “They made us go to the south. They did not let us wait for our husbands. They said, ‘Go to the south from here, and that is it,’ and they made us leave. They lied to us, saying the road is safe, but they were shooting us throughout the way.”

Dina Abu Zor: “We asked the Israeli interrogator, ‘Where are our male relatives?’ He said, ‘They are gone. No one is left.’ We asked about the children. He said all of them are gone. Palestine is gone. Gaza is gone.”

The mass displacement and war on the besieged territory has led to a public health disaster. The U.N.’s World Food Programme warns half of Gaza’s population of over 2 million people is starving and that nine out of 10 people are not able to eat every day. As clean water becomes more scarce, diarrhea, skin infections, acute viral hepatitis, scabies and measles are multiplying.   https://www.democracynow.org/2023/12/11/headlines/displacement_disease_and_death_plague_gazans_as_israel_continues_its_genocidal_assault

2023-12-10 Humiliating pictures of Hamas terrorists may harm Israel – ex-official   [MEK Note: Remember Israel calls every Palestinian, especially men, as a Hamas terrorist. Most of these men aren’t in Hamas, but they might want to in the future after their treatment and Israel’s genocide of their families and friends.  Compare how Hamas treats prisoners to the way Israel does.  Who are the real terrorists?]

The question of whether photos depicting Hamas terrorists in submissive positions contribute to Israel’s war objectives or hinder them intensifies with the increasing frequency of such images being released.   As the IDF intensifies operations in the southern Gaza Strip, the security establishment must take a stance on this matter, which appears to divide opinions.   While these photos may humiliate Hamas, a former senior security official suggests they may not truly serve our interests. “These photos are intended to resonate with the Israeli public, albeit within a specific demographic, but their effectiveness is uncertain,” the former official said.

The same official raises concerns about some events appearing staged. For instance, in a recently released video, an elderly man in his underwear can be seen moving to the front of the line and placing his weapon down. This particular photo raises numerous questions, according to the official.   “Under what circumstances would someone undress before surrendering their weapon?” they pointed out. “Logically, the weapon should be surrendered first, followed by removing clothes.”

Additionally, the official points out that not everyone there is a terrorist. Some people are questioned in the field and released, while only a few undergo further investigation in Israel.  https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/humiliating-pictures-of-hamas-terrorists-may-harm-israel-ex-official/ar-AA1lhdDp

Israel Absentees’ Property Law

Israel Absentees’ Property Law (see Absentees’ Property Law)

Updated 2023-12-08

Absentees’ Property Law – Israel    The Absentees’ Property Law was enacted in 1950 by the Knesset, shortly after the establishment of the state of Israel in May 19481234. The law retroactively legalizes all actions taken under the emergency regulations by treating them as if they had been taken on the basis of the 1950 law. The law declares that any property situated within the post-war boundaries of Israel and owned by an Arab who had left the country between November 29, 1947 and May 19, 1948, or by a Palestinian who went abroad or to an area of Palestine held by hostile forces up to September 1, 1948, lost all rights to that property. The Absentees’ Property Law was the main legal instrument used by Israel to take possession of the land belonging to the internal and external Palestinian refugees, and Muslim Waqf properties across the state.     https://www.bing.com/search?q=Israeli+Absentee+Property+Law&form=ANNTH1&refig=068a9f43fa3e4c5faa5e64375edc3f69

2022-01-21 Explained: How Israel’s Absentees’ Property Law keeps Palestinians from their homes     With more than a dozen pages and 39 articles, the Absentees’ Property Law is one of Israel’s founding texts, granting the state the power to confiscate and impound Palestinian properties and assets that they were forced to leave behind in 1948.

The law, which applies only to Palestinians, is draconian and has remained a stable policy for numerous Israeli governments over the years, legal experts told Middle East Eye.  This week, Israel has used the law to justify the eviction of the Salhiya family and the demolition of their house in occupied East Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.  The Absentees’ Property Law puts Palestinians at a disadvantage from the start, branding them absentees even if they are present in the country or hold Israeli citizenship.

The law was issued in March 1950 by the government of Israel’s first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion.   Israeli leaders had to deal with vast swathes of lands and thousands of properties in more than 500 towns, where their Palestinian population was emptied by Zionist militias during the Nakba (Catastrophe) of 1948 and the establishment of Israel.   They also had to handle the assets – including cash, stocks, furniture, books, companies, banks, and other movable assets – left behind by almost 800,000 Palestinians who fled and ended up in refugee camps in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq.   These lands and properties lie in modern-day Israel. Their original owners are primarily refugees, but some are internally displaced and now living in Israel.

The tone of the law was addressed primarily to the new settlers of Israel, prompting them to report whatever Palestinian assets and properties they had taken to the Custodian of Absentees’ Property. Failing to do so could lead to a fine and, in some cases, imprisonment.   Before 1950, Israel had several emergency laws to deal with these properties and assets. But following the UN’s adoption of resolution 194 in December 1948, which enshrined the Palestinian right of return and called for financial compensation for property loss or damage, Israel was faced with the task of dealing with the large-scale looting carried out by new settlers.  https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/israel-palestinian-absentees-property-law-eviction-homes-explained

2021-07-The draconian law used by Israel to steal Palestinian land       In early May, more than 50 Jewish families packed their bags and moved to a hilltop in the West Bank in the occupied Palestinian territory.   They quickly erected modular homes, a synagogue, a nursery, and even dug a playground to claim a piece of land they neither purchased nor inherited.

All settlements or outposts – a backdoor to keep claiming Palestinian land after Israel committed to freezing settlements in the Oslo Accords in 1993 – are deemed illegal under international law.   The Evyatar outpost stood out because it was illegal under Israeli law, too.    Last week, the settlers were finally evicted and the Palestinians celebrated it as a victory of their resistance. Analysts, however, warned that celebrations were premature and unwarranted.

Al Jazeera spoke to several experts who said the eviction did not reflect a change of Israeli policy and only displayed how the Israeli state deploys its instruments to facilitate systematic theft of Palestinian property.    Instead of being reprimanded by the state for illegally confiscating land that did not belong to them, the settlers were made a promise.

The Israeli media reported Naftali Bennett, Israel’s new prime minister and a staunch supporter of illegal settlements, offered the settlers a deal – the state would ascertain whether the land can be classified as “state land” and if yes – the conclusion the state is expected to arrive at – it would be handed over to the settlers even though it lies in Palestinian villages.

The settlers leave; the houses remain; the army puts up a military post; the government starts the process of declaring state lands,” Ofran said.   Israel legalises such outposts or settlements by deploying a draconian interpretation of the Ottoman law that if the land was not cultivated for several years in a row it would become the property of the state.

Yet the state might just confiscate it for the settlers, as it has done hundreds of times. Israel has settled 441,000 settlers in 280 settlements on more than two million dunams – one dunam equals 1,000 square metres – of Palestinian land in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.  It has passed a series of discriminatory laws to be able to confiscate Palestinian property.  https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/7/8/how-israel-backs-settlers-to-confiscate-palestinian-lands

Hostages Remaining After November Truce

2023-12-06 How is Netanyahu’s handling of captives’ crisis seen in Israel?     In Israel, the plight of the 138 captives held by Hamas dominates the political and news agenda.    Some relatives want Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to quit – because of his strategy including relentless bombing of Gaza.    What do people in Israel think?

Presenter: Neave Barker Guests: Udi Goren – Cousin of captive detained in Gaza, active in ‘Bring Them Home Now’ campaigns,  Gershon Baskin – Former hostage negotiator, founder of Israel-Palestine Center for Research and Information think tank, Akiva Eldar – Political analyst, author of ‘Lords of the Land: The War Over Israel’s Settlements in the Occupied Territories, 1967-2007’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIUjDYwXjv8

2023-12-05 Anger and confusion in Israel over incomplete captive release: Analyst     Mairav Zonszein, of the International Crisis Group, tells Al Jazeera that there is “extreme anger” among the families of captives still in Gaza and the Israeli public at large over Prime Minister Netanyahu’s decision to resume military operations.   “The government doesn’t seem to be providing a clear plan not only on how to bring back the hostages, but on how to secure a victory,” she said.

Even with growing calls for the Israeli prime minister to step down, Zonszein said Netanyahu is in a strong position and will likely be able to remain in his seat.   But, she added: “If Israel isn’t able to provide achievements in this operation, I think Israelis will lose more and more of their patience, and there’s also hundreds of thousands of reservists currently [called up to] the army and the economy is being hurt.”    There is an “internal time limit” on Israel’s war on Gaza, Zonszein saidhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnDi97YlHTs

Genocide Returns After Hostage Release Truce

Genocide Returns After Hostage Release Truce

2023-12-05 Bernie Sanders Rejects $10B in Military Aid for “Extremist Netanyahu Government”     The Vermont senator described Israel’s genocidal war on the Gaza Strip as unlawful and “immoral.”    S. Sen. Bernie Sanders said Monday that he opposes sending billions of dollars in additional military assistance to the Israeli government as it continues to wage a catastrophic war on the Gaza Strip, an assault that the Vermont senator described as unlawful and “immoral.”  “I do not believe we should be appropriating over $10 billion for the right-wing, extremist Netanyahu government to continue its current military approach,” Sanders, who has faced backlash from progressives and some of his former campaign staffers for refusing to support a permanent cease-fire, said in remarks on the Senate floor.

Sanders’ speech came as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) set the stage for a procedural vote on a $106 billion supplemental package that includes military assistance for Israel and Ukraine. The vote is expected to fail as Republicans push for the inclusion of asylum restrictions that progressive Democrats have condemned as draconian.https://truthout.org/articles/bernie-sanders-rejects-10b-in-military-aid-for-extremist-netanyahu-government/

2023-12-04 Israeli ground forces roll into south Gaza    A Hamas source told Al-Jazeera on Sunday that 70 percent of the Israeli army has withdrawn from the north to the south due to the resistance’s attacks.     Israeli forces have expanded their ground operations into southern Gaza, as eyewitnesses reported the entry of dozens of tanks, troops carriers, and bulldozers through the city of Khan Yunis, south of the strip, on 4 December.       https://new.thecradle.co/articles/israeli-ground-forces-roll-into-south-gaza

2023-12-04 ‘Death Zone’: Over 700 Killed in 24 Hours as Israeli Bombing Blitz of Gaza Rages       “Everywhere you turn to, there are children with third-degree burns, shrapnel wounds, brain injuries and broken bones,” James Elder, UNICEF’s global spokesperson, told Al Jazeera from Gaza.  “Mothers crying over children who look like they are hours away from death. It seems like a death zone right now.”

The Israel Defense Force (IDF) has been dropping evacuation leaflets across the south of Gaza in cities that include Khan Younis, Rafah, and others neighborhoods where many had been told to flee by Israel prior to the recent week-long pause.   The IDF is now using a wholly invented “grid system” to tell Palestinians in Gaza which sectors might be safe and which ones will not, leading to reports of widespread confusion on the ground for those trying to keep themselves and their families safe from the indiscriminate bombing.

“What Israel is doing in Gaza right now is one of the most cruel tactics of war I’ve ever seen,” said Rohan Talbot, director of advocacy and campaigns for the U.K.-based Medical Aid Palestine, on Sunday. “This grid system effectively means people are being chased from square to square, in constant mortal fear. Bombing happens both inside and outside ‘unsafe’ areas. It’s terrorism.”    “And they say it’s about protecting civilians! People in Gaza are saying they hope to die just to be free from the fear!” Talbot declared. “I use the word terrorism in its specific sense: using violence to intimidate civilians for political aims. Israeli leaders don’t hide that this is what they are doing.”   https://www.commondreams.org/news/gaza-2666425151

2023-12-03 Israel, Expanding Offensive, Tells More Gazans to Evacuate     Amid a barrage of airstrikes, Israel sharply expanded its evacuation orders in the Gaza Strip on Sunday in preparation for an expected ground invasion in the southern part of the territory.  The new orders, coming three days after the collapse of a weeklong truce, sowed confusion and fear among Gaza residents, some of whom have already been displaced at least once before.    https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/03/world/middleeast/gaza-israel-evacuation-orders.html
