2024-06-08 What’s at Stake in the 2024 European Parliament Elections?    Europeans go to polls this week to vote for parliament. What is at stake? Is the future of the European Union at risk on account of the surge of the far right? But is the E.U. even a democratic institution worth saving? And why is the left in crisis across Europe?

Political economist and political scientist C. J. Polychroniou tackles these questions in an interview with the French-Greek independent journalist Alexandra Boutri.https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/european-parliament-elections-2024

2024-03-18 ‘No Longer on the Brink’: Top EU Official Blames Israel for Famine in Gaza     “This famine is not a natural disaster. It is not a flaw. It is not an earthquake. It is entirely man-made,” said Josep Borrell, the E.U.’s foreign affairs chief.    The European Union’s top foreign affairs official on Monday said that after more than five months of Israel’s blocking of humanitarian aid and bombardment of Gaza, the U.S.-backed government has pushed the enclave into famine.

“In Gaza we are no longer on the brink of famine; we are in a state of famine, affecting thousands of people,” Borrell said in Brussels at a meeting on humanitarian aid for the besieged enclave. “This is unacceptable. Starvation is used as a weapon of war.”

“By whom? Let’s dare to say by whom. By the one that prevents humanitarian support entering into Gaza,” he said, adding that “Israel is provoking famine.”   https://www.commondreams.org/news/gaza-2667538636

2024-02-12 Dutch Court Blocks Weapons Parts for Israel   With compliance ordered within a week, the Dutch government plans to appeal the ruling, which came Monday as the country’s  prime minister was visiting Netanyahu in JerusalemOxfam Novib Executive Director Michiel Servaes, whose group filed the lawsuit against the Dutch government in December with PAX and the Rights Forum, declared that “this positive ruling by the judge is very good news, especially for civilians in Gaza.”  “It is an important step to force the Dutch government to adhere to international law, which the Netherlands has strongly advocated for in the past,” he added.   https://consortiumnews.com/2024/02/12/dutch-court-blocks-weapons-parts-for-israel/

2024-02-02 ‘We Are Shocked’ – Belgium Summons Israeli Ambassador following Agency Bombing in Gaza  Israel has destroyed more than half of Gaza, claiming that it is destroying ‘terrorist infrastructure’. The destruction, however, is clearly indiscriminate, according to reports. The EU country of Belgium has declared it would summon the Israeli ambassador after the office building housing the Belgian Agency for Development Cooperation (Enabel) in Gaza was bombed and destroyed by Israeli airstrikes. The decision was communicated via X by Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib.    “Targeting civilian buildings is unacceptable,” she said in a post on X.https://www.palestinechronicle.com/we-are-shocked-belgium-summons-israeli-ambassador-following-agency-bombing-in-gaza/

2024-02-02 ‘Uphold Consistency on International Law’ – Indonesian Diplomat to EU   Addressing the opening of the EU-Indo-Pacific Forum in Brussels, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi reportedly said ‘Listen to your heart and do the right thing, to stop atrocities in Gaza, in Palestine.”  She added, “The EU, and all of us, as firm supporters of upholding international law, will also have a consistent position when it comes to Gaza,” reports the Anadolu news agency.    Noting that Palestine has been encountering continuing injustice for the past seven decades, Marsudi asked: “Will we continue to be silent? … We will not.” https://www.palestinechronicle.com/uphold-consistency-on-international-law-indonesian-diplomat-to-eu/2024-02-02 Ireland: Time for EU to Reconsider Association Agreement with Israel     Ireland, an EU member that continues to call for accountability in the Israeli genocide in Gaza is now advocating change in the relationship between Israel and the pan-European organization.https://www.palestinechronicle.com/ireland-time-for-eu-to-reconsider-association-agreement-with-israel/

2023-09-28   80 Years Ago Denmark Miraculously Saved 8,000 Jews From Nazi Murder   Human history is all-too-full of ghastly acts of cruelty and torment. They are our ultimate downfall.    But 80 years ago, the people of Denmark—-often a great personal risk—-saved some 8,000 Jewish Danes from occupying Nazi murderers.   On October 1– 1943’s Jewish New Year– Denmark’s King and its underground resistance helped mobilize the nation to ferry nearly all resident Jews to safety in Sweden.

The story is complex, but among the most moving and powerful in the annals of our species.   Hitler’s Wehrmacht had occupied Denmark in 1940. Recognizing the Germans’ overpowering might and love of slaughter, the Danes watched the Nazis march into their country with little violent resistance.    Conversely, Hitler desperately needed Danish agricultural supplies. The result was an uneasy coexistence. Alone amongst the countries he occupied, Der Fuhrer abstained from slaughtering en masse the country’s Jews, who were generally well integrated into Denmark’s social mainstream.

But after three years, the Danes had enough of their goose-stepping occupiers.  Resistance escalated. Hitler lost patience. So he decided to begin shipping the country’s Jews to death camps. https://freepress.org/article/80-years-ago-denmark-miraculously-saved-8000-jews-nazi-murder

Cluster Bombs

Cluster Bombs

Updated 2024-02-26

2009=8-02-16 Flooding South Lebanon- Israel’s Use of Cluster Munitions in Lebanon in July and August 2006   Human Rights Watch’s researchers were on the ground in Lebanon throughout the conflict and after, and our findings paint a quite different picture of the IDF’s conduct. Research in more than 40 towns and villages found that the IDF’s use of cluster munitions was both indiscriminate and disproportionate, in violation of IHL, and in some locations possibly a war crime. In dozens of towns and villages, Israel used cluster munitions containing submunitions with known high failure rates. These left behind homes, gardens, fields, and public spaces-including a hospital-littered with hundreds of thousands and possibly up to one million unexploded submunitions.[2] By their nature, these dangerous, volatile submunitions cannot distinguish between combatants and non-combatants, foreseeably endangering civilians for months or years to come.

Cluster munitions are large, ground-launched or air-dropped weapons that, depending on their type, contain dozens or hundreds of submunitions. During strikes they endanger civilians because they blanket a broad area, and when they are used in or near populated areas, civilian casualties are virtually guaranteed. They also threaten civilians after conflict because they leave high numbers of hazardous submunitions that have failed to explode on impact as designed-known as duds-which can easily be set off by unwitting persons. As yet these weapons are not explicitly banned. However, their use is strictly limited by existing international humanitarian law on indiscriminate and disproportionate attacks. Moreover, global concern at the impact of cluster munitions, all too graphically manifested in south Lebanon, is lending impetus to international efforts to develop a legally binding instrument banning those that have an unacceptable humanitarian effect.

Israel continues to have a duty to investigate publicly, independently, impartially, and rigorously these extensive violations of international humanitarian law. Investigation should include a thorough examination of whether individual commanders bear responsibility for war crimes-that is, for intentionally or recklessly authorizing or conducting attacks that would indiscriminately or disproportionally harm civilians. The continuing failure of the Government of Israel to mount a credible investigation one and a half years after the end of the 2006 conflict in Lebanon-and failure on the Lebanese side of the border to investigate Hezbollah’s compliance with international humanitarian law-reaffirms the need for the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) to establish an International Commission of Inquiry to investigate reports of violations of international humanitarian law, including possible war crimes, committed by both sides during the conflict. https://www.hrw.org/report/2008/02/16/flooding-south-lebanon/israels-use-cluster-munitions-lebanon-july-and-august-2006

Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR)

Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR)

Updated 2024-02-26

2024-02-02 US Court Rules Israel’s Assault on Gaza is Plausible Case of Genocide    A US federal judge has acknowledged the government’s complicity in Israel’s genocide in Gaza, calling on President Joe Biden to reconsider his position, while simultaneously dismissing the case due to lack of jurisdiction.  In November, the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) filed a federal lawsuit against President Biden, Defence Secretary, Lloyd Austin, and Secretary of State, Antony Blinken.   The CCR sought an injunction that would halt any additional US military aid or diplomatic support to Israel during its ongoing war on the Gaza Strip, reports the Middle-East Monitor (Memo).

To support its case, the lawsuit also presented statements from Israeli officials proving “intent to destroy the Palestinian people in Gaza, including using dehumanizing descriptions, which is frequently associated with genocidal and persecutory campaigns.” The lawsuit was filed on behalf of aid groups, Defense for Children International – Palestine and Al-Haq, as well as Dr. Omar Al-Najjar – operating in southern Gaza’s Rafah area – and plaintiffs with families in Gaza who have suffered displacement or deaths of loved ones during Israel’s bombardment of the enclave.  https://www.palestinechronicle.com/us-court-rules-israels-assault-on-gaza-is-plausible-case-of-genocide/

Cease Fire Temporary

Cease Fire Temporary

Updated 2024-08-24

2024-08-17 US ‘bridging proposal’ for Gaza deal said to exclude two of Netanyahu’s key demands     The US “bridging proposal” designed to enable the finalizing of a hostages-for-ceasefire deal in the coming week does not provide for an ongoing Israeli presence along the Gaza-Egypt border or for a mechanism in central Gaza to prevent the return of armed Hamas forces to the Strip’s north, as demanded by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Hebrew media reported Saturday, citing unnamed officials familiar with the talks.

Only if Israel and the US can agree terms on these two key issues will Egypt and Qatar press Hamas to take the deal, the report said. Hamas has made clear that it will not agree to a deal that accommodates these two Israeli demands, the report noted.    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/us-bridging-proposal-for-gaza-deal-said-to-exclude-two-of-netanyahu-s-key-demands/ar-AA1oYJP3

2024-08-17 Israel to receive more hostages during first phase of deal – report   During the talks in Doha, Israel agreed to reduce the number of Palestinian prisoners it could veto the release of as part of a deal with Hamas in exchange for increasing the number of Israeli hostages to be released by Hamas in each of the six weeks of the first phase of the deal, Walla reported on Saturday, citing two Israeli officials.  https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/israel-to-receive-more-hostages-during-first-phase-of-deal-report/ar-AA1oYmt5?

2024-08-17 What are the prospects for talks to end Israel’s war on Gaza? | Inside Story     A pause in Gaza ceasefire talks, but no pause in attacks from Israel.  he war has now killed 40,000 Palestinians with many others dead under rubble.   Ceasefire hopes rest on talks brokered by Qatar, Egypt and the U.S., Israel’s biggest donor and weapons supplier.   After Israel began its war in October, it took five months during which 32-thousand Palestinians were killed, before the U.S. and EU finally called for a ceasefire.  The horrors for Gaza’s people continue, the nightmare for Israelis with loved-ones held captive in Gaza goes on too.   So what are the prospects of talks succeeding this time? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9O1I_vX-4_U

2024-08-17 UN Secretary-General Urges ‘Polio Pause’ in Israeli War on Gaza as First Case Reported      “It is impossible to conduct a polio vaccination campaign with war raging all over,” said António Guterres after a 10-month-old infant became Gaza’s first new poliomyelitis case in 25 years.

Following over a month of warnings, Gaza recorded its first case of polio since the highly contagious virus was eradicated there 25 years ago, prompting a Friday call by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres for a temporary truce to enable a vaccination drive in the embattled strip.

The Gaza Health Ministry said Friday that an 10-month-old infant in the central city of Deir al-Balah “who has not received any polio vaccine dose” has tested positive for the virus, which often causes paralysis and can be fatal. The ministry said the baby is one of “a number of children” who have presented with symptoms consistent with polio in recent days. https://www.commondreams.org/news/polio-in-gaza

2024-03-08 Blinken says the ball is in Hamas’ court on Gaza ceasefire   U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Friday it was up to Hamas to agree to a ceasefire that would allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza and pave the way for talks on an “enduring resolution” to the conflict.   Israel and Hamas blamed each other for the lack of agreement on a deal that would require Hamas to free some of the hostages it still holds in exchange for a 40-day truce. Palestinian prisoners held in Israel would also be released.   https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/blinken-says-the-ball-is-in-hamas-court-on-gaza-ceasefire/ar-BB1jz8H7?

2024-03-08 Hope fades for Israeli-Hamas cease-fire as holy month of Ramadan nears: Updates     Negotiators for Hamas left Cairo without a cease-fire deal Thursday, apparently ending hopes that a deal could be in place ahead of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Hamas spokesman Jihad Taha said Israel “refuses to commit to and give guarantees regarding the cease-fire, the return of the displaced and withdrawal from the areas of its incursion.” But he said the talks would resume next week. Ramadan will begin Sunday or Monday depending on the sighting of the moon.

There was no immediate comment from Israel, which did not send representatives to the latest round of talks. Israel first wants Hamas to provide detailed information on the hostages. Hamas said the captives are held by multiple groups and no accounting can take place until a cease-fire is in place.  https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/hope-fades-for-israeli-hamas-cease-fire-as-holy-month-of-ramadan-nears-updates/ar-BB1jvbQw

2024-02-23 Jewish House Democrats join calls for ‘mutual, temporary’ Israel-Hamas cease-fire

[MEK Note: These congresspersons only want a ceasefire to get the release of the Israel Hostages.   Little if any concern for the 10’s of thousands of Palestinian civilians killed or injured and  the mass displacement of close to 2 million others without proper food, water, shelter, electricity and medicine.   No concern of what would continue to happen after the hostages have been released.  Apparently not their concern or problem.]

Thirteen House Democrats on Thursday echoed the Biden administration in calling for a “mutual, temporary” cease-fire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, to provide for the “immediate return of all of the 134 hostages,” as well as additional humanitarian aid.

The call — signed by some pro-Israel Democrats as well as others who’ve been more critical of the Israeli military campaign — reflects the shifting politics around the terminology of a “cease-fire,” and the growth in calls for a “temporary cease-fire” to pause the conflict while ensuring the release of hostages. “We cannot overstate the urgency of the hostages’ situation in Hamas’s captivity in Gaza,” the lawmakers wrote in a letter to President Joe Biden. “Every day that the remaining living hostages are left to suffer in the tunnels in Gaza without medical attention increases the chances that more will die. The hostages and their families simply cannot wait any longer.”  https://jewishinsider.com/2024/02/jewish-house-democrats-cease-fire-israel-hamas-gaza/

2024-02-24 Brazil President criticises Israel’s war with Hamas as ‘genocide       https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/brazil-president-criticises-israel-s-war-with-hamas-as-genocide/vi-BB1iPw67?

2024-02-21 Blinken meets with Brazilian president following controversial Holocaust comments     Days after Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva compared Israel’s actions in Gaza to Hitler’s treatment of Jews during the Holocaust, he met with Secretary of State Tony Blinken in Brasilia.

Public communications from the State Department about the Wednesday meeting did not mention Lula’s comments on Israel, although an official readout said the two men discussed the war in Gaza. Blinken tweeted afterward that U.S.-Brazil “ties are stronger than ever,” with a photo of the men smiling and shaking hands.

The day before, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said “obviously we disagree” with Lula’s comments. “We have been quite clear that we do not believe that genocide has occurred in Gaza,” said Miller. https://jewishinsider.com/2024/02/blinken-meets-with-brazilian-president-following-controversial-holocaust-comments/

Biden – Geocide Joe

Biden – Geocide Joe

Updated 2024-08-24

Why Biden is hiding  Biden’s team has taken to hosting smaller events and keeping locations a secret until the President arrives, lest he be heckled by pro-Palestinian protesters — and they’re reportedly considering hiring a private company to screen attendees ahead of a major fundraiser this month.

The facade of unquestioning U.S. support for the Israeli government is crumbling, thanks in large part to the immense pressure being exerted by the Palestine solidarity movement.    Biden knows U.S. complicity in the Gaza genocide could cost him the 2024 election, and he’s willing to do just about anything to save face — except cut off the flow of U.S. dollars to Israel’s genocidal military.   https://www.jewishvoiceforpeace.org/2024/03/06/why-biden-is-hiding/

2024-08-08 Tlaib Slams White House for Criticizing Cori Bush’s Vow to Fight AIPAC   Bush will “be remembered for valiantly standing up for the rights of Palestinians when too many still did not have the political courage to do so.”   U.S. Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib on Wednesday ripped the White House for admonishing Rep. Cori Bush’s vow to fight the American Israel Public Affairs Committee after the powerful lobby group spent millions of dollars to unseat the Missouri Democrat for opposing Israel’s genocidal assault on Gaza.

AIPAC’s dark money arm, United Democracy Project (UDP), spent $8 million in support of Bush’s opponent, St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell, in the second-most expensive House race ever. UDP spent $15 million to defeat Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.), another “Squad” member who has criticized Israel’s war on Gaza. AIPAC has vowed to spend $100 million to unseat progressive lawmakers—many of them Black and brown—who it deems insufficiently supportive of Israel.

In a defiant concession speech on Tuesday night, Bush declared, “AIPAC, I’m coming to tear your kingdom down!”   “All they did was radicalize me, so now they need to be afraid,” she added. https://www.commondreams.org/news/cori-bush-rashida-tlaib

2024-08-06 Netanyahu Isn’t Interested in Peace, So Why Does Biden Keep Pretending Otherwise?    Why—in the midst of critical negotiations to implement U.S. President Joe Biden’s plan to bring about a cease-fire in Gaza, release Israelis held captive by Hamas and a significant number of Palestinians held by Israel, and move toward a negotiated permanent end to the conflict—would Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu decide to assassinate the chief Hamas negotiator while he was visiting Iran? And why—while the U.S. says it was working to deescalate tensions with Lebanon’s Hezbollah—would Israel choose to up the ante by assassinating Hezbollah’s number two?  Why hasn’t the administration condemned the assassinations in Beirut and Iran when they know that they will surely sabotage the efforts of negotiators?

We know the answers to both questions: Benjamin Netanyahu isn’t interested in peace. He doesn’t want a negotiated deal to release hostages and end the war on Gaza. He doesn’t want to deescalate the conflict there or in the north with Hezbollah. And he most certainly doesn’t want a “two-state solution” that would grant the Palestinian people independence in a sovereign state of their own.

There are two things Netanyahu does want, and, at this point, both are perversely connected. Above all, he desperately wants to remain in office, because should he lose his post as prime minister, the prosecution of the corruption charges against him will continue in full force. As the charges are so serious and the evidence so clear, he will likely be convicted and humiliated. This is not speculation—it’s widely discussed in Israel and was even hinted at by President Biden in a May 28 interview with Time Magazine. When he was asked “Is Netanyahu prolonging the war for political reasons?” Biden responded, “There is every reason for people to draw that conclusion.”

The second reason is that Netanyahu wants the war to continue and even be accelerated. He made this clear in his remarks before U.S. Congress and in an address to the Israeli public a few days ago. He seeks “total victory,” which he defines as more than the military defeat of Israel’s enemies. Without acknowledging any Israeli culpability, he charged that the Palestinians had created a hate-filled culture which in the post-war period would require massive deradicalization—the outcome of which would have Palestinians accepting Jewish hegemony in Eretz Israel and understanding their place as a conquered and subordinate people. https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/netanyahu-doesn-t-want-peace

2024-08-02 Harris Must Commit to Ending Support for Israel’s Genocide in Gaza     During Donald Trump’s presidency, he repeatedly capitulated to Israel’s Zionist regime. He illegally recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, illegally recognized Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights, and declared Israeli settlements on Palestinian land lawful despite international law to the contrary.

As Israel continues its 10-month genocidal campaign in Gaza, there is no doubt that if he were president now, Trump would give Israel everything it wants to “finish what they started” and “get it over with fast,” that is, ethnically cleanse all of the Palestinians from Gaza.

But this genocide is happening on Joe Biden’s watch. His administration has aided and abetted Israeli genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, killing more than 40,000 Palestinians according to the official Gaza Health Ministry count, although the real death toll is likely much higher. Besides the $3.8 billion the U.S. sends annually to Israel, it has furnished an additional $15 billion in military aid since October 7, 2023. And the U.S. has provided political and diplomatic cover to Israel by vetoing three Security Council resolutions that would have required a ceasefire in Gaza.   https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/kamala-harris-israel-genocide-in-gaza

2024-07-25 Palestinian Activists Say Biden’s Legacy Is Gaza Genocide and US Imperialism    Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who is reportedly being considered as a potential running mate for Harris, wrote, “President Biden is a patriot who has served our country honorably in the Senate, as Vice President, and as one of the most consequential presidents in modern history.” While much of the praise Biden has received has been underscored by quiet relief — in Magic 8 Ball terms, I would say the Democratic Party’s prospects in November have shifted from “outlook not so good” to “ask again later” — these conciliatory rehabilitations of Biden’s crumbling image warrant correction.

While “history” is often characterized as an all-knowing, future moral arbiter, the burden of recording truths that should be reiterated across time falls to those living in the present. In addition to ensuring that Biden is remembered as an architect of mass incarceration, a persecutor of Anita Hill, and a friend to segregationists, we must also resist any sympathetic framing of his political descent. While Biden’s supporters have characterized the president as an old man with a stutter who was bullied and betrayed, the truth of Biden’s last act is far more horrific. It is a tale that should be told in ever-climbing death tolls, in the testimonies of doctors who have pulled maggots from the flesh-torn bodies of children, and through the cries of bereft orphans, parents, and grandparents who have lost the “soul of [their] soul” to U.S.-backed Israeli military assaults. As Palestinian scholar, author, and activist Eman Abdelhadi told me this week, “Biden’s name should never be spoken without the names of the dead of Gaza. It was within his power to stop this genocide, and he chose not to.”https://truthout.org/articles/palestinian-activists-say-bidens-legacy-is-gaza-genocide-and-us-imperialism/

2024-07-25 US Health Workers Back From Gaza Calculate Death Toll at 92,000 — at a Minimum     ozens of U.S. doctors and nurses who have returned from volunteer trips to Gaza say in a scathing new letter that Israel’s assault, along with the famine and epidemics raging across Gaza, have killed a conservative estimate of at least 92,000 Palestinians so far — over double the widely-cited official death count by health officials.

In their message sent to President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and the first lady on Thursday, the group of 45 health care workers say that the things they saw in Gaza are beyond anything they have seen in other conflicts, and will forever be seared in their minds.

“President and Dr. Biden, we wish you could see the nightmares that plague so many of us since we have returned: dreams of children maimed and mutilated by our weapons, and their inconsolable mothers begging us to save them,” they wrote. “We wish you could hear the cries and screams our consciences will not let us forget. We cannot believe that anyone would continue arming the country that is deliberately killing these children after seeing what we have seen.” https://truthout.org/articles/us-health-workers-back-from-gaza-calculate-death-toll-at-92000-at-a-minimum/

2024-07-22 Advocates Say Biden Must Immediately Act to Stop Polio Outbreak in Gaza     Advocates for Palestinian rights are demanding that the Biden administration take urgent action to stop a potential outbreak of polio in Gaza after the virus that causes the deadly disease was found in Gaza’s wastewater, threatening an epidemic that would be nothing short of catastrophic.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) says that Biden bears responsibility to respond to the crisis after funding Israel’s destruction of Gaza’s health and sanitation systems, which has created conditions ripe for a deadly epidemic.

“Having enabled the wholesale destruction of civilian infrastructure and medical facilities in Gaza, the Biden administration has a duty to ensure that polio vaccines reach all those who need to be vaccinated,” said CAIR communications director Ibrahim Hooper in a statement Sunday.https://truthout.org/articles/advocates-say-biden-must-immediately-act-to-stop-polio-outbreak-in-gaza/

2024-07-16 Biden Says He’s Done “More” for Palestinians “Than Anybody” as He Backs Genocide      resident Joe Biden bragged about his supposed charity to Palestinians in an interview on Monday, claiming that he’s done “more” for Palestinians “than anybody” — despite the fact that he has done more to perpetuate the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza than any world leader outside of Israel.

In an interview on Complex’s “360 With Speedy” released Monday, Biden implied that he deserves praise for supposedly allowing Palestinians in Gaza to access humanitarian aid. In reality, however, his administration has consistently encouraged Israeli officials to block all humanitarian aid into Gaza, resulting in famine and widespread disease for hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.

“By the way, I’m the guy that did more for the Palestinian community than anybody. I’m the guy that opened up all the assets. I’m the guy that made sure that I got the Egyptians to open the border to let goods through, medicine and food,” Biden said in the interview that was filmed on Friday.https://truthout.org/articles/biden-says-hes-done-more-for-palestinians-than-anybody-as-he-backs-genocide/

2024-06-20 Biden Continues to Cement a Bloody and Immoral Legacy in Gaza     The president’s level of indifference to the human suffering of Palestinians can only be described as soulless.

With the world’s sensibility already reeling from Israel’s deliberate incineration of dozens of civilians huddled in tents in a purported safe zone in Rafah, the genocidaires doubled down two weeks later by slaughtering nearly 300 Palestinians and wounding 700 more during their U.S.-aided rescue of four Israeli hostages.

Upon receiving word of the blood-drenched June 8 operation, American President Joe Biden celebrated the “safe rescue” of the hostages while wholly ignoring the so-called collateral damage—innocent civilians, most of whom were women and children. That level of indifference can only be described as soulless.   So goes the ongoing reveal of the American president’s true nature  https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/biden-immoral-gaza-legacy

2024-06-15 Biden Prioritizes US Imperial Ambition Over Palestinian Rights   While Israel continues its military siege of Gaza, the United States is trying to exploit the situation with the goal of strengthening U.S. power in the Middle East.

Rather than seeking a long-term solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict, the United States is prioritizing its longstanding goal of normalizing relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia. With such a deal, which would require calm in Gaza to bring Saudi Arabia on board, the United States would further marginalize the Palestinians while more tightly integrating Israel into its regional network of alliances and partnerships.  “I think we’re at a point where the necessary agreements between the United States and Saudi Arabia are very well within reach,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken told Congress last month.

For decades, the United States has dominated the Middle East. A key to U.S. power has been the U.S.-led network of alliances and partnerships that includes Israel and the Arab states. It enables the United States to station tens of thousands of soldiers across the Middle East and quickly surge additional forces into the area.   “It’s a vast strategic advantage,” Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin explained in 2021, referring to the U.S.-led network. “It is unmatched. It is unparalleled. And it is unrivaled.”   https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/biden-u-s-imperialism-palestine

2024-06-09 Can Biden Learn From 1968 Before It’s Too Late?  In order to get the necessary turnout among young people, minorities, and progressives to prevent a Republican victory in November, the Biden administration needs to change its policies, and soon.

The year 1968 may be repeating itself. The United States is again experiencing an incumbent Democratic administration supporting an unpopular war, disruptive protests on college campuses, police repression against nonviolent demonstrators, a Republican challenger promising to restore law and order and, to top it off, a Democratic National Convention in Chicago.   https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/biden-learn-from-1968

2024-04-07 Israel’s Aid Capitulation Exposes the Lie Behind Biden’s Gaza Policy   The Biden administration has insisted there’s very little it can do to alter policy in the region and acted as though Israel’s policy decisions are unconnected to the United States, the country that gives them more than $4 billion a year in military aid.  https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/israel-s-aid-capitulation-exposes-the-lie-behind-biden-s-gaza-policy

2024-03-22 Should Biden be tried for genocide crimes? | The Chris Hedges Report     Israel has killed more than 30,000 Palestinians over the past 5 months of its genocide in Gaza, including more than 13,000 children. The Israeli bombing campaign has wiped hospitals, universities, primary schools, and other critical infrastructure off the map, not even sparing tent cities in Rafah where over a million displaced people have fled to. Through it all, the Biden administration has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Israel, supplying the funds and arms required for Israel’s extermination campaign to continue. As international legal action against Israel and its allies mounts, the question has arisen of whether and how the US and its leaders ought to be brought to justice. A recently appealed lawsuit from the Center for Constitutional Rights, filed on behalf of Palestinian human rights organization Defense for Children Palestine, sought to do just that. Plaintiff Ayman Nijim and CCR Senior Staff Attorney Katherine Gallagher join The Chris Hedges Report to discuss their recent lawsuit and the possibility of a genocide crimes case against President Biden.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhyIxP7DTyg

2024-03-19 Cornel West slams Joe Biden’s Gaza policy: ‘Most of our politicians are cowards’ | Real Talk Online     Our guest this week is US independent presidential candidate Cornel West, and we ask him why he called Joe Biden a “war criminal”.   He also explains why he feels Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is a “gangster”, why Biden’s Gaza policy makes him a “hypocrite” and how Arab-American voters will turn their backs on him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRz5Bjv9KKM

2024-03-21 Former US Diplomat Says ‘Collaboration’ in Gaza Genocide Could Make Biden ‘Target of Prosecution’    A former top adviser at the U.S. State Department was among nearly 70 former diplomats and officials who urged President Joe Biden on Thursday to strengthen his stance against Israel’s practices as it continues its monthslong bombardment of Gaza.

But the Middle East expert, Barnett Rubin, also criticized the letter, calling it “weak” and insufficient in its warnings to the administration.  Rubin, now a distinguished fellow at the Center on International Cooperation, said the dozens of former government and military officials wrote the letter warning against U.S. support for Israel’s military tactics in response to a Hamas-led attack on October 7, without considering Israeli officials’ open calls for genocidal violence.  “It is evident that making Gaza uninhabitable is a feature, not a bug in this operation,” Rubin wrote in what he described as a “letter of dissent” to the former officials. “You have ignored the issue of genocide.”

“President Biden’s collaboration in this genocide could make him a target of prosecution,” wrote Rubin. “There is NO excuse for providing any aid whatsoever to a force engaged in these actions.”  https://www.commondreams.org/news/biden-israel-support

2024-03-17 Biden’s Embrace of Irish-American Culture Should Include Solidarity with Palestine    President Joe Biden, who proudly touts his Irish heritage, leads an administration that enables Israel’s murderous actions in Gaza through political support and active arms sales. This echoes the suffering our Irish ancestors faced during the English occupation of Ireland and the subsequent Irish Famine, marked by military invasion, occupation, and forced starvation.

President Biden must confront the glaring hypocrisy of his administration’s stance on Palestine. His unwavering support for Israel contradicts the values of justice and human rights that he campaigned on and tarnishes any U.S. claim to moral leadership on the global stage. He cannot celebrate our Irish heritage in the White House while ignoring the Palestinian cries of oppression.  https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/biden-irish-american-solidarity-palestine

2024 -03-01 Progressives Demand That Biden Stop “Greenlighting the Massacre of Palestinians”    Progressive lawmakers are demanding that President Joe Biden call for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, saying it is “clear” that Israel is violating orders by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to avoid going further into its massacre with its famine campaign, the lawmakers said.

On Thursday, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Michigan) held a press conference with fellow progressives and sent a letter to Biden demanding that Biden stand up to Israel as it prepares an invasion of Rafah, where 1.5 million people are sheltering after being forcibly removed from their homes in the northern parts of the region. Israeli forces have already begun bombing in what residents have described as some of the worst attacks on Gaza so far.

The lawmakers join human rights experts and groups also saying that Israel is defying the ICJ’s orders to avoid going further into its slaughter, already finding it “plausible” that Israel is committing genocide in an initial ruling. Many experts have maintained that Israel’s assault is one of the most clear examples of genocide in modern times.

The genocide has been made possible by U.S. weaponry and continued military and diplomatic support by the Biden administration, which advocates say is violating a number of U.S. laws designed to prevent aid from going to countries and military groups committing war crimes.    https://truthout.org/articles/progressives-demand-that-biden-stop-greenlighting-the-massacre-of-palestinians/?

2024-03-01 As Outrage Over Gaza Grows, Biden Hides From Protests Amid High-Stakes Election      “A Democratic campaign that is scared of college campuses is not a campaign that can win given today’s coalitions,” said one journalist.

Public opposition to U.S. President Joe Biden’s support for Israel pushed more than 100,000 primary voters in the key state of Michigan this week to vote “uncommitted” instead of backing him, but while the Biden campaign brushed the protest votes off with promises to “listen to what folks’ concerns are,” the president is reportedly intent on avoiding contact with pro-Palestinian constituents as much as possible.  https://www.commondreams.org/news/biden-hiding-gaza

2024-02-12 Which Side Are You On?   “No matter what Biden does in whatever number of days, or years left for him on this earth, his fate has been sealed: He shall be remembered as the man who has enabled one of the worst genocides in modern history. Shame on anyone who supports or defends this brute.” —Ramzy Baroud, December 24, 2023.

Under capitalism’s laws, owning the means of production gives the capitalist class the right to all of the surplus value we workers create—and there’s no limit to how much wealth any one capitalist can accumulate.

There was a meme circulating on Facebook, “It’s 80,000 BC. You are immortal. The world is still frozen in an ice age. You decide to save $10,000 every day, never spending a cent. 82,021 years later, it’s 2021. You still don’t have as much money as Elon Musk.” That’s an example of how much surplus value they are allowed to accumulate on an individual basis.

But we have the ultimate power in our hands to stop them in their tracks by withholding our labor—rendering them helpless.   We must build and support our own workers’ party democratically controlled and run by the working class and dedicated to fighting for our interests—a party against war, environmental destruction, police repression, racism, and sexism. A party that stands for turning the ownership and control of the means of production and the surplus value our labor creates over to the world’s working class.

We have the means right now to build a Labor Party of our own that supports socialism and opposes all capitalist parties—a party that can win freedom, democracy, economic and social equality, and justice—a socialist world under the democratic control of the masses of working people.  https://www.socialistviewpoint.org/marapr_24/marapr_24_02.html

2024-01-29 Genocide Joe is no defender of democracy  Any number of voices in Washington have tried to spin the reality that is all too obvious to the rest of the world: Israel continues to violate human rights, and its violations grow more outrageous with every passing day. Yet both parties in Washington remain committed to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu despite his belligerence, and none of them support either the international law or human rights principles adopted after the Second World War.  In that context, it is even more disingenuous to suggest that democracy is on the ballot this November. Democracy has no friends among the major parties’ candidates.

Last week, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) announced its interim ruling favoring South Africa’s legal challenge to Israel’s genocide in Gaza. The opinion, which Washington and Tel Aviv have spun to their benefit despite its scathing terms recognizing Israel’s actions as genocidal, should surprise no one. South Africa overcame its own legacy of apartheid more recently than any other state, and has international credibility to observes its similarities in the only remaining state in the world that continues to embrace it.  https://shahidbuttar.substack.com/p/genocide-joe-is-no-defender-of-democracy

2023-10-27 Letter to the Speaker of the House and President pro tempore of the Senate consistent with the War Powers Resolution (Public Law 93-148)    Dear Mr. Speaker:   (Dear Madam President:)   As I have reported previously, militia groups affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have perpetrated a series of attacks against United States personnel and facilities in Iraq and Syria.

2024-02-04 Forefather of Indie Rap Movement on Gaza, US Complicity – Palestine Chronicle Interviews Sage Francis   After more than four months of intense Israeli bombardment and shelling, over 100,000 Palestinians have been killed, wounded or are still missing.   Despite the harrowing figures and equally horrific images and videos that we receive from Gaza on a minute basis, Western leaders and mainstream media are relentless in their manipulation of the truth. They remain committed to their dehumanizing narrative, which depicts Palestinians as terrorists and Israel as the epitome of civilization and democracy.

Unlike the case of other wars, where artists are encouraged to take a principled stance in defense of and to speak on behalf of the victims of war, speaking out for the Gaza victims hardly earns an artist any accolade or even a mere nod of approval in mainstream society.

Sage Francis, American artist, the forefather of the indie rap movement and the CEO of Strange Famous Records, about his latest song ‘Master Cleanse’, featuring Old Boy Rhymes and Rituals of Mine. (See video below)  The song and the video constitute a powerful attempt at raising awareness regarding the horrific events underway in the besieged Gaza Strip. The song and its poignant lyrics also serve as an unabashed criticism of the American political system, which continues to fund the devastating war using US taxpayers’ money.    “I’m having lucid dreams of gruesome scenes; Things that human beings do when we become too extreme; Pursue our pray like wolverines, we root for teams; But some see troops as a means to an end,” part of the song’s lyrics read.    The rest of the song is an equally courageous confrontation, not just of war itself, but of the collective complicity that allows such genocidal wars to go on.   https://www.palestinechronicle.com/forefather-of-indie-rap-movement-on-gaza-us-complicity-palestine-chronicle-interviews-sage-francis/

2024-05-07 To Achieve Peace and Stability, the Middle East Needs a Regional Security Framework  The broader Middle East needs peace and stability, not more conflict. This will not come through more arms and more hostile posturing. If we’ve learned anything from history, it’s that the region’s antagonists will not be defeated. Conflict either emboldens them or results in a metastasizing of their conflicts’ root causes into new and more virulent forms.

During the past century, the U.S. and its Western allies played an extremely negative role. From the Sykes-Picot betrayal and dismemberment of the region, to the fatal partition of Palestine and United Nation’s failure to insist on Israel honoring the terms of its conditional admission in 1948, the West repeatedly turned a blind eye to Israel’s aggressive behaviors and its egregious violations of Palestinian rights. This only served to make a bad situation worse. As a result, the region has been forced to endure repeated wars involving Israel, the Palestinians, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Egypt.

Our policies have been no better with regard to Iran. We supported the repressive regime of its Shah and worked to overthrow Iran’s effort to form a democracy in the 1950s—a wound Iranians never forgot. This hostility came into clear focus after the Shah’s pro-Western regime grew more repressive and was overthrown in a popular revolt in 1979. That promising revolution quickly devolved into the aggressive Islamic Republic of Iran with its decidedly anti-Western bent.

During the decade-long war of the 1980s between revolutionary Iran and Saddam Hussein’s Iraq, the U.S. supplied munitions (including chemical and biological components) to Iraq, while covertly (and illegally) funneling weapons to Iran. The results were devastating to both nations. Then came a decade of crippling U.S.-imposed sanctions on both countries and finally the disastrous U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq, which led to Iran gaining a foothold in Iraq among its long-oppressed Shi’a majority. Iran was now emboldened to pursue its regional ambitions with its allies in Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen, all of whom had their own grievances within their countries and with the West.  https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/middle-east-regional-security-framework

2024-02-14 The Killing Fields of Gaza   Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed tirelessly to be acting in the name of the Jewish victims of the Nazi Holocaust with Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.   In truth, the actions of his regime and military these past few months has placed them much closer to the guards than the inmates at Hitler’s death camps during this dark period in human affairs.  In other words, and put more simply, when your response to genocide is more genocide, you become precisely that which you claim to be against. This is precisely where we are now after four months of the IDF’s murderous and wholly indiscriminate military campaign against the people of Gaza.

Throughout, and to its eternal shame, the West along with Arab governments in the region have stood by and offered nothing in the way of serious and meaningful intervention. Supine and tepid calls for humanitarian pauses, temporary cessations, ceasefires, the provision of humanitarian aid; all have dropped and evaporated like snowflakes on the ground, such has been their impotence.

The result is 13,000 Palestinian children being thus far sent to their deaths under the missiles and bombs of a 21st century military machine in the hands of a government comprised of men with 14th century minds.   Netanyahu and his supporters will not be happy until the history, culture and entire existence of the Palestinians are relegated to the museum. This is both evident and implicit in the mad slaughter they have and are currently engaged in.  A twisted conception of the world as being fashioned on the basis of might is right and racial hierarchy has throughout human history produced monsters. And in this respect, Benjamin Netanyahu is merely the latest in a long line.  In this respect, too, he has inflicted a moral injury on every one of us still in possession of a beating heart and a conscience, not to mention consciousness.  https://consortiumnews.com/2024/02/14/the-killing-fields-of-gaza/

2024-02-14 AS’AD AbuKHALIL: Arabs Divided on ICJ Ruling   The liberal Arab camp thinks the ICJ ruling will lead to a peaceful settlement of the Palestinian question, while the popular camp has lost faith in international organizations, including the ICJ.  Israel will forever be stained with the label of genocide and its supporters will always be accused of supporting genocide after the International Court of Justice ruled last month that there was prima facie evidence to put Israel on trial for genocide. Even powerful foreign lobbies will find it difficult to remove the stigma. This is not lost on U.S. citizens who have spent untold millions of dollars and have heard too many lies to continue supporting an image of moral superiority.

If an Arab country rather than South Africa had brought the charge of genocide, the U.S., and other Israel supporters would have easily dismissed it, pointing to a sordid record of human rights violations and repression by that government.    But this was South Africa which, given its own record of human rights adherence since the end of apartheid, and high standards of democracy and equality embedded in the South African constitution, has emerged as a moral leader not only of developing countries but of the world.  South Africa is a moral superpower, while the U.S. has been reduced to a mere bully.   South Africa now leads the “Free World”  and not the U.S., NATO and its coalition of former colonial powers.  South Africa is the new superpower, without nuclear weapons. Its soft power is not the same as America’s, which camouflages naked aggression and the subjugation of other countries.

There are two camps on ICJ ruling in the Arab world. The liberal intellectuals who are funded by Gulf despots and/or NATO governments/Soros insist that Arabs should never abandon their belief in the “international community” (a code word for the genocide axis of NATO) and in international law and human rights.

The other camp, which speaks more for free Arab public opinion, regard the notion of international law and human rights as tools and even Western government tricks to solidify their domination over people of the South.  They want to tranquilize and delude them into thinking justice can be restored through international fora. The fact that a month after the ICJ ruling, Israel continues its genocide in Gaza, and Western governments continue to endorse and sponsor it is testimony to the limitations and even the impotence of international organizations.  https://consortiumnews.com/2024/02/14/asad-abukhhalil-arabs-divided-on-icj-ruling/
