2024-01-11 ‘Protest Is the Tool by Which We Realize Our Democracy’    CounterSpin interview with Chip Gibbons on the right to protest.  So at Defending Rights & Dissent, we like to say that we defend your right to know and your freedom to act. We oppose government secrecy and the government attempts to hide its own crimes, and we also defend the rights of the people to take to the streets, to call their members of Congress, to engage in dissent.

Dissent is vital to our democracy, and, I believe I’ve commented in the past, protest is the tool by which we realize our democracy, that we realize the democratic ambitions of our country. The right to protest is both a fundamental right, and it is a core tool for achieving other fundamental rights. Without the right to protest, we wouldn’t have made as much progress as we have on civil rights (and I know there’s a lot more progress to be made); we wouldn’t have made as much progress on women’s rights, on LGBTQ rights, on peace and disarmament (although that cause feels very far from being realized these days).   https://fair.org/home/protest-is-the-tool-by-which-we-realize-our-democracy/

2024-01-07 Chip Gibbons on the Right to Protest   It was a big deal when Jewish Americans who oppose US support for Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza filled New York’s Grand Central Terminal. But not big enough to make the front page of the local paper, the New York Times. US journalists invoke the First Amendment a lot, but not so much when it extends to regular folks using their individual voices, sometimes at significant personal risk, to say NO to something the US government is doing in their name.

Some listeners may remember marching with thousands of others in advance of the US war on Iraq, only to come home and find the paper or TV station ignored them utterly, or distorted their effort and their message — as when NBC’s Tom Brokaw reported a Washington, DC, anti-war march of at least 100,000 people, met with a couple hundred pro-war counter-protesters, as: “Opponents and supporters of the war marched in cities across the nation on Saturday.”

“Protest is the voice of the people,” our guest’s organization states. We talk with Chip Gibbons, policy director at Defending Rights & Dissent, this week on CounterSpin. Defending Rights & Dissent aims to invigorate the Bill of Rights and, crucially, to protect our right to political expression.  https://kpfa.org/episode/counterspin-january-7-2024/

2024-02-07 War on Gaza: Red Cross warns of ‘catastrophic’ health situation for chronically ill patients    The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said there is a “catastrophic” healthcare situation in the Gaza Strip, as it warned there might only be two functioning hospitals left for the whole population in the coming days.

Speaking to Middle East Eye, the organisation’s chief protection officer, Christian Cardon de Lichtbuer, said the healthcare infrastructure of the enclave had been left in “survival mode” following months of Israeli bombardment.  “There are still three hospitals functioning, and probably in the coming days, only two hospitals for a population of 2.3 million. These are facts, and this is catastrophic,” he explained.   Lichtbuer said that all medical teams in Gaza were focused on dealing with emergency treatment, and that meant people with chronic illnesses and conditions were being neglected.   https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/gaza-red-cross-hospitals-catastrophic 2024-02-07 Israeli Forces Kill Paramedic, Open Fire on Al Amal Hospitalhttps://www.palestinechronicle.com/israeli-forces-kill-paramedic-open-fire-on-al-amal-hospital/

Rafah

Rafah

Updated 2024-08-29

2024-06-12 Despite Mainstream Headlines, Israel’s Tents Massacre Was Not a ‘Tragic Mistake’ Most establishment U.S. media repeated Israel’s false claims that the tents massacre was an accident, weaving disinformation messaging into toned-down descriptions of the scene.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, Israel bombed starving Gazan refugees crowded in tents in Rafah, where Israel had told them to go. As Jeffrey St. Clair (CounterPunch, 5/31/24) wrote, leaflets dropped in Rafah a few days before told them to go to “Tel al-Sultan through Beach Road,” an area set up by the UNRWA refugee agency and designated a United Naitons humanitarian safe zone. The leaflet added, “Don’t blame us after we warned you.”

Nevertheless, without warning, Israel hit the camp with at least eight missiles spreading fire though the encampment of plastic tents (Quds News, 5/26/24). Some refugees burned to death, mostly women and children, leaving them dismembered and charred.

The world saw the terror of the massacre on international and social media. Images showed the area of the strike engulfed in flames as Palestinians screamed, cried, ran for safety, and sought to help the injured. “They told people to move there then killed them,” Richard Medhurst (5/28/24) posted.https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/tents-massacre-not-mistake

2024-06-07 The Rafah Tents Massacre Exemplifies Israeli and US Disdain for Palestinian Life      This reality is a disastrous tragedy for Palestinians, defining the United States for generations in a negative light and ultimately harming Washington’s soft power and any genuine effort to do good in the region.

Palestinians have long been melted down into various data points, often relegating them to vague and dehumanizing categories in the so-called “modern” world. Israel’s latest invasion of Rafah in southern Gaza and the May 26 massacre of roughly 45 Palestinians—where most were burned alive in the strike on their displacement tents—exemplifies this reality as Israeli leaders and the United States continue to show disdain for Palestinian life. https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/tents-massacre-palestinian-life

2024-05-26 Israel’s war on Gaza live news: ‘More than 30’ killed in Rafah strike    An Israeli army bombed a displacement camp in northern Rafah, killing at least 35 Palestinians, the Gaza Health Ministry says.

The Hamas military wing launches a missile attack on Tel Aviv, triggering alarm sirens. Earlier, the Qassam Brigades said its fighters “killed and captured” an unidentified number of Israeli soldiers in Jabalia camp. The Israeli military has denied the claim. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/liveblog/2024/5/26/israels-war-on-gaza-live-news-hamas-claims-capture-of-israeli-troops

2024-05-26 What’s happened in Gaza since ICJ ordered Israel stop Rafah assault?    Israel has continued to bomb Rafah despite the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling on Friday that ordered Israel to halt its military operation in the southernmost part of the Gaza Strip.       https://www.aljazeera.com/program/newsfeed/2024/5/26/whats-happened-in-gaza-since-icj-ordered-israel-stop-rafah-assault

2024-05-21 UNRWA says food distribution in Rafah suspended, citing insecurity   The UN agency for Palestinian refugees also cited a lack of supplies as Israel continues closure of border crossings.    The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) says that food distribution in Gaza’s southern city of Rafah has been suspended due to a lack of supplies and insecurity in the densely populated city.

UNRWA said in a statement on X on Tuesday that only seven of its 24 health centres were operational and that it had not received any medical supplies in the past 10 days due to “closures/disruptions” at the Rafah and the Karem Abu Salem – known in Israel as Kerem Shalom – crossings into Gaza.https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/5/21/unrwa-says-food-distribution-in-rafah-suspended-citing-insecurity

2024-05-06 ‘This Is a Crime Against Humanity’: 600,000 Children in Line of Fire as IDF Moves on Rafah      Humanitarian organizations and United Nations officials are warning that the lives of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian children—nearly all of whom are sick, injured, or malnourished—are in grave danger as Israeli forces on Monday moved to forcibly evacuate the overcrowded Gaza city of Rafah ahead of an expected ground invasion.

An estimated 600,000 children are believed to be sheltering in Rafah in terrible conditions and under the near-constant threat of Israeli airstrikes, which rocked the city and killed dozens of people—including at least eight kids—hours before the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued its evacuation directives.

“They’re being told to move, quote unquote, to a ‘humanitarian zone.’ That’s a unilaterally declared humanitarian zone,” James Elder, a spokesperson for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), said in a BBC appearance Monday. “That’s not a humanitarian zone where humanitarians have been able to provide the services they need to. I’ve been talking to colleagues and friends in Rafah this morning, and they’re terrified.”  https://www.commondreams.org/news/rafah-children-idf

2024-05-07 Cutting Off Lifeline for Starving Gazans, Israel Seizes Control of Rafah Crossing   “This has devastating impacts for the people of Gaza who are already on the verge of famine,” said the UNRWA’s director of planning.

With tanks and ground forces, the Israeli military seized control of the Gaza side of Rafah’s border crossing with Egypt on Tuesday, cutting off a critical humanitarian aid route as much of the enclave’s population faces imminent famine.

Israel’s takeover of the Rafah crossing came hours after the country’s military ordered more than 100,000 people in the southern Gaza city to evacuate ahead of a ground assault, which is moving forward after the right-wing Israeli government rejected a cease-fire proposal accepted by Hamas. Cease-fire negotiations mediated by Egypt and Qatar are expected to continue in the coming days. https://www.commondreams.org/news/israel-rafah-border-crossing

2024-05-06 Sanders Says US Must ‘End All Offensive Military Aid’ as Israel Targets Rafah    As Israel rejected a cease-fire deal that Hamas had accepted Monday, dashing the hopes of civilianstrapped in the southern Gaza city of Rafah that an invasion could be averted, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders called on the Biden administration to stop the looming attack that humanitarian and rights organizations have been warning against for months.

The Vermont independent senator said President Joe Biden must follow through on his call for Israel to protect civilian lives by forgoing a ground invasion of Rafah. In March Biden said the attack would be a “red line” unless Israel developed a credible plan to evacuate civilians, who include an estimated 600,000 children in the city.

To stop Israel from killing potentially hundreds of thousands of people in the city, where 1.4 million people are sheltering following Israel’s obliteration of cities across Gaza, the U.S. must “end all offensive military aid” to the country, Sanders said Monday.  https://www.commondreams.org/news/bernie-sanders-2668176062

2024-05-01    57 House Dems Call On Biden to Prevent Israeli Assault on Rafah     Dozens of U.S. House Democrats on Wednesday joined Congresswomen Pramila Jayapal and Madeleine Dean in pressuring President Joe Biden to prevent a full-scale Israeli assault on Rafah, a city in the southern Gaza Strip that’s now full of over a million displaced Palestinians.

“We write with urgency to say: an offensive invasion into Rafah by Israel in the upcoming days is wholly unacceptable,” states the letter from Jayapal (D-Wash.), Dean (D-Pa.), and 55 other members of Congress. “We welcome your administration’s efforts to dissuade the Israeli government from this military operation, which would deepen both the humanitarian catastrophe for people in Gaza and the strategic challenges that regional and global stakeholders face in this conflict.”

“We now urge you to enforce U.S. law and policy by withholding certain offensive weaponry or other military support that can be used for an assault on Rafah, including the offensive weaponry and aid already signed into law,” the letter continues. https://www.commondreams.org/news/rafah-gaza-strip

2024-03-11 UN Chief Warns Rafah Invasion Would Plunge Gazans Into ‘Even Deeper Circle of Hell’   United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres marked the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan on Monday by reiterating his call for an end to Israel’s war on Gaza and warning against a ground invasion of Rafah, a small city near the Egyptian border in which more than 1.5 million people are sheltering.

“My strongest appeal today is to honor the spirit of Ramadan by silencing the guns—and removing all obstacles to ensure the delivery of lifesaving aid at the speed and massive scale required,” said Guterres. “At the same time—and in the Ramadan spirit of compassion—I call for the immediate release of all hostages.”

The U.N. chief described the level of death and destruction that the Israeli military has inflicted on Gaza since October as unprecedented during his seven-year tenure as secretary-general. Most of the territory’s population is displaced, over 60% of housing has been destroyed or damaged, and at least 21 children have died of malnutrition and dehydration.   https://www.commondreams.org/news/guterres-rafah-invasion

2024-03-06 What a Leaked US Cable Says About Israel’s Looming Assault on Rafah     An Israeli invasion of Rafah would have “catastrophic” consequences for the 1.5 million civilians sheltering in the southern Gazan city, a U.S. diplomatic cable has warned.

The cable, written by members of the Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), was sent from Jerusalem to the State Department in Washington, D.C. on Monday and reported by The Intercept on Tuesday.

“A potential escalation of military operations in within Southern Gaza’s Rafah Governorate could result in catastrophic humanitarian consequences, including mass civilian casualties, extensive population displacement, and the collapse of the existing humanitarian response, multiple relief actors have warned USAID’s Levant Disaster Assistance Response Team,” the cable reads.  “A ‘military incursion’ into a tent city of unarmed civilians is a horrifying, psychopathic action.”  https://www.commondreams.org/news/leaked-cable-rafah-invasion

2024-03-01 The World Must Act to Prevent the Invasion of Rafah     If the international community does not finally develop the will to stop Israel, this horrific crime will, by far, prove worse than all the crimes that have already been committed.   Currently, there are anywhere between 1.3 to 1.5 million people in Rafah, an area that, before the war started, had a population of merely 200,000 people.

The Palestinian city of Rafah is not just older than Israel, it is as old as civilization itself.    It has existed for thousands of years. The Canaanites referred to it as Rafia, and Rafia has been almost always there, guarding the southern frontiers of Palestine, ancient and modern.   As the gateway between two continents and two worlds, Rafah has been at the forefront of many wars and foreign invasions, from ancient Egyptians to the Romans, to Napoleon and his eventually vanquished army.

Now, it is Benjamin Netanyahu’s turn. The Israeli prime minister has made Rafah the jewel of his crown of shame, the battle that would determine the fate of his genocidal war in Gaza—in fact the very future of his country.  “Those who want to prevent us from operating in Rafah are essentially telling us: ‘Lose the war,’” he said at a press conference on February 17.   https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/prevent-rafah-invasion

2024-02-15 Peace Group Urges Biden to Prevent ‘Catastrophic’ Israeli Assault on Rafah    The head of a leading U.S.-based peace group on Thursday joined the growing chorus of voices imploring the Biden administration to do everything in its power to pressure the Israeli government to prevent an Israel Defense Forces ground invasion of Rafah, the southern Gaza city where 1.5 million Palestinian war refugees and residents with nowhere to go are bracing for the worst.

“A full-scale attack on Rafah would be catastrophic and the Biden administration must use every tool at their disposal to stop it from taking place,” said Win Without War executive director Sara Haghdoosti.  https://www.commondreams.org/news/rafah-invasion-2667290725

2024-02-13 The Stakes of Rafah  Over the past several months, the Israeli military has gradually forced about 1.5 million Palestinians in Gaza to the city of Rafah, on Gaza’s southern border with Egypt. Now, the Palestinians displaced to what Israel has called a safe zone are under severe risk of Israeli bombardment and a military ground campaign. Many of the refugees have been displaced several times since Israel began its military operation in Gaza in October.

During Sunday night’s Super Bowl, Israel launched airstrikes on Rafah that killed at least 67 people, among the some 28,000 Palestinians killed since October. This comes after Israel conducted several other deadly military strikes in Rafah in recent days. Israel has claimed that the operations are necessary to eliminate Hamas, which it believes to be active in the border city. It’s difficult, however, to square this extreme and seemingly indiscriminate violence with what Israeli officials have said is a shift toward a new, lower-intensity phase of the war.

The Rafah crossing is where most humanitarian aid enters the occupied Palestinian territory. Israel pushed Palestinians from their homes in northern and central Gaza to the south, and they are enduring a humanitarian catastrophe.   https://prospect.org/world/2024-02-13-stakes-of-rafah/

2024-02-08 Expanded Rafah Assault Would Be ‘Stain on Israel’ and Its Backers: Refugee Group     Accusing Israel of waging war on a “gigantic refugee camp” where more than 1 million Palestinians have moved to escape air and ground attacks over the last four months, the head of the Norwegian Refugee Council on Thursday called on the Israel Defense Forces to stop its shelling of the southern Gaza city of Rafah and halt further plans for an intensified assault.

With Israeli military officials reporting that they have not devised a plan to protect civilian lives in Rafah, NRC Secretary-General Jan Egeland said that a ground offensive in the city—previously designated a “safe zone” where more than 1 million Palestinians were told to go as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched air and ground attacks across the enclave—would be a “stain on both Israel and those nations providing arms,” including the United States.

“It would be a bloodbath, and among children and women, among the innocent,” Egeland told CNN, adding that reports of Hamas’ tactic of “blending in with civilians… does not in any way justify indiscriminate attacks.” https://www.commondreams.org/news/israel-attacks-rafah

2024-02-06 UN Warns of Israeli War Crimes as Rafah Invasion Looms     Any Israeli invasion of Rafah in southern Gaza could lead to “war crimes,” a United Nations official warned on Tuesday.  The warning comes as Israel has signaled its intent to move on the city on the Egyptian border, where around half of Gaza’s population is now seeking refuge.

“We as the U.N. and member states of the U.N. can bear witness,” U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) spokesperson Jens Laerke told reporters in Geneva, according toUN News. “We can make clear what the law says… under international humanitarian law, indiscriminate bombing of densely populated areas may amount to war crimes.”  https://www.commondreams.org/news/israel-invasion-rafah-war-crimes

2024-02-05 Palestinian Groups Warn of Catastrophe as Israeli Forces Close in on Rafah     A coalition of Palestinian human rights groups issued a joint statement Monday warning of impending catastrophe as Israel’s military signaled plans to expand its ground assault to Rafah, the small city near Gaza’s border with Egypt where hundreds of thousands of people have sought refuge from Israeli bombs.   The Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR), Al Mezan, and Al-Haq appealed to the international community to intervene and prevent an attack on Rafah, warning that an Israeli incursion “would significantly exacerbate the ongoing genocidal acts perpetrated by the Israeli military and authorities against the Palestinian population in Gaza and blatantly violates the provisional measures order issued by the International Court of Justice on 26 January 2024.”

Roughly half of Gaza’s population of 2.2 million is currently in Rafah, with many living in makeshift tents and struggling to survive without adequate food, medicine, and clean water. The city is so crowded that humanitarian relief officials have said there is just one toilet for every 500 people, conditions that are accelerating the spread of infectious diseases.    https://www.commondreams.org/news/rafah-gaza-israel

2024-02-03 ‘Pressure Cooker of Despair’: UN, EU ‘Deeply Concerned’ about Rafah Invasion    Israeli occupation forces intensified their attacks last night in the southern Gaza city of Rafah as their fighter jets struck three homes, killing 24 and wounding dozens, the Ministry of Health announced.  Rafah is densely populated with displaced people from all around the besieged Gaza Strip.

On Friday, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant confirmed that the Israeli army was preparing to move to Rafah. However, Israeli media reported on Saturday that Tel Aviv had pledged to Egypt it would not start an operation in Rafah before reducing its population.   According to the Israeli media, the Israeli government would move the displaced people to Khan Yunis or Deir Al-Balah and not back to the northern part of Gaza.   https://www.palestinechronicle.com/pressure-cooker-of-despair-un-eu-deeply-concerned-about-rafah-invasion/

2024-02-03 Nowhere Left to Flee: Rafah to Become Israel’s New Battlefield in Gaza War    Israeli forces shelled the outskirts of the last refuge on the southern edge of the Gaza Strip on Friday, where the displaced population, penned against the border fence in their hundreds of thousands, feared a new assault with nowhere left to flee.  More than half of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents are now homeless and crammed into Rafah. Tens of thousands more have arrived in recent days, carrying belongings in their arms and pulling children on carts, since Israeli forces last week launched one of the biggest assaults of the war to capture adjacent Khan Yunis, the main southern city. If the Israeli tanks keep coming, “we will be left with two choices: stay and die or climb the walls into Egypt,” said Emad, 55, a businessman and father of six, reached on a mobile phone chat app.   “Most of Gaza’s population are in Rafah. If the tanks storm in, it will be a massacre like never before during this war.” https://www.palestinechronicle.com/nowhere-left-to-flee-rafah-to-become-israels-new-battlefield-in-gaza-war/

Middle East War

Middle East War

Updated 2024-02-26

2024-02-07 PATRICK LAWRENCE: Lost & Fearful in The Middle East     Of all the amateurish moments to arise as the Biden regime conducts its foreign policy, the White House’s official statement as B1–B bombers let loose over Iraq and Syria last Friday may be the taker of the cake.   As the ordnance fell on 85 targets in seven locations, many of them outposts of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, our addled president felt compelled to insist, “The United States does not seek conflict in the Middle East or anywhere else in the world.”  How many times have we heard this since these latest operations in Iraq, Syria and Yemen began? Antony Blinken, the secretary of state, has said the same thing in the same words. Lloyd Austin, the defense secretary, has, too. So has Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser. So has John Kirby, the National Security Council spokesman.

Once we are finished counting, we can consider the astounding stupidity that has led the Biden regime into this impossible contradiction. Reflecting the president’s compulsive support for Israel over the whole of his political life, the U.S. has incautiously stayed with the Zionist state as it seeks to widen the war all the way to Iran by way of Lebanon and Syria.   Now, as the war runs straight up to the Islamic Republic’s borders, Biden and his people take to insisting they do not want that wider war the Israelis are bent on provoking. https://consortiumnews.com/2024/02/07/patrick-lawrence-lost-fearful-in-the-middle-east/

2024-01-31 America Has Stumbled Into an Avoidable Middle East War   Despite plenty of warnings, the United States has stumbled into a worst-case scenario: an incredibly dangerous, expanding regional Middle East war with the United States fighting on multiple fronts.   And it was all entirely avoidable.

On Sunday, Iraqi factions from the Iran-allied Axis of Resistance killed three Americans at a base in Jordan. Miraculously, until the attack on the military installation on the Jordan-Syria border known as Tower 22, no Americans had died in more than 150 strikes on American bases in the region since October 7. Axis of Resistance forces have vowed to continue attacking American targets, and global shipping through the Red Sea, until the war in Gaza comes to an end.

Without a swift course correction, the president who ended the war in Afghanistan might go down in history as the same president who started a new, unwinnable regional war that mires the United States in asymmetric conflict from Iran to the Suez Canal, from the Red Sea to the Turkish border.    https://prospect.org/world/2024-01-31-avoidable-middle-east-war/

2023-12-11 Israel’s Strategic Calamity   Its brutal war on Gaza is turning it into a pariah state and risking regional war.   A more nebulous yet still serious risk is that Israel’s unending civilian massacre will alienate its allies, above all the U.S. Now, the power of the Israel lobby can be seen in the yawning gap between, on the one hand, Congress and the Biden administration, which have backed Israel almost in lockstep, and on the other the American people, who favor a permanent cease-fire by a 2-to-1 margin.

The biggest immediate risk is that the war will spiral into a regional conflict. Tensions have been escalating along the border with Lebanon for weeks now, and American officials tell Akbar Shahid Ahmed at HuffPost that Israel is considering using U.S. aid for attacks in Lebanon. “There is a will on the Israeli side to take advantage of the current rise in tensions to change the realities on the ground … to push Hezbollah far from the Israeli border,” a European diplomat said. Fighting against Iran-backed militias has long since spread to Syria, and massive protests have put major pressure on the Jordanian government to cut its relatively close ties to Israel. (Some Israeli extremists call for a “Greater Israel” including most of Jordan, by the way.) Egypt has forcefully criticized the Gaza war, and categorically refused to accept large numbers of refugees.

So Israel could see itself bogged down in street-to-street fighting against Hamas in Gaza, a shooting war with Hezbollah (which is far more formidable) in Lebanon and Syria, while greatly damaging its relationships with its other neighbors, all at the same time.  https://prospect.org/world/2023-12-11-israels-strategic-calamity/

Marwan Barghouti

Marwan Barghouti (also see Palestine’s Nelson Mandela)

Combining unfolding events on the ground, in-depth interviews and powerful archive spanning over 30 years, we see Marwan’s evolution from activist to learned politician, uniting people and bringing hope to a flatlined peace process. 2024-02-15 ‘Palestinian Nelson Mandela’ – Who Is Marwan Barghouti?    Branded the ‘Palestinian Nelson Mandela’, Marwan Barghouti is perhaps the most popular Palestinian political figure in the Fatah party.   Predicted to be released from Israeli military detention, in a coming Hamas-Israel prisoner exchange, he is being held up as a potential competitor to become the next Palestinian Authority (PA) President.

However, it wasn’t until the first Intifada, in 1987, that Marwan Barghouti would rise to prominence, during this uprising he emerged as a popular figure and led various demonstrations against the occupation, in the West Bank, before his deportation to neighboring Jordan.

As a result of the Oslo Accords, signed between the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) and Israel, Marwan Barghouti was allowed to return to the West Bank. In 1994, he then became secretary general of the Fatah Party for the West Bank.

Come to the Second Intifada in the year 2000, after having expressed his agreement with the opinion held by the PLO that pursuing negotiations was the most viable option, he publicly advocated resistance against the occupation and led demonstrations during the uprising.

In 2002, Barghouti was arrested by the Israeli occupation forces and was handed five life sentences. Israel has accused Marwan Barghouti of masterminding various resistance operations which resulted in the killing and injuring of Israelis.   From within Israeli detention he has helped lead the prisoner movement, established hunger strikes, the most prominent of which occurred in 2017, even calling for a Third Intifada in the year 2014.

Viewed as a political figure with unifying potential, he is a favorite to win any future Palestinian Presidential election and is seen by many Palestinians as a better alternative to other leading figures within the Fatah movement; which has shrunk in popularity significantly in the era of PA President Abbas.  Hamas has repeatedly signaled its intentions to exchange Israeli prisoners it holds in Gaza, for Marwan Barghouti and other high-profiled Palestinian political leaders.   https://www.palestinechronicle.com/palestinian-nelson-mandela-who-is-marwan-barghouti/

2024-02-03 No Palestinians Will Be Killed in Malaysia – Prime Minister    Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed yesterday that he discussed with Egyptian officials ways to bring aid into Gaza through the Rafah crossing.  Ibrahim stressed the need for the focus to be on the humanitarian tragedy that Palestinians are experiencing in the Gaza Strip and not on relations with Hamas.

Commenting on Yemen’s Ansarallah Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, Ibrahim added in statements to Al Jazeera that the problem did not begin with the operations launched by the Yemeni group but rather with the Israeli aggression against Gaza.

The Malaysian official affirmed that the security services in his country are at the highest level of caution in anticipation of any assassination operations of Palestinians, emphasizing that his country will not tolerate any attempt to kill Palestinians on its territory.   https://www.palestinechronicle.com/no-palestinians-will-be-killed-in-malaysia-prime-minister/

2024-06-18 Why Queer and Trans Activists Who Support Palestine are Calling for Boycott of SF Pride     Yaffa A.S. is the Executive Director of the Muslim Alliance for Sexual & Gender Diversity. 2024-02-04 Why We Must Reject the Pinkwashing of Genocide in Gaza     The Progress Pride Flag was never intended to fly over the corpses of dead Palestinians. Like many queer young people today, I have watched with paralyzing anger as the symbol of our liberation waves atop armed Israeli killing machines and our existence is commodified as justification for Israel’s imperial violence. Israel has no right to wave any flag over the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Yet, for that flag to be colored with a rainbow is illustrative of the settler state’s incorrect, dangerous rationale for carrying out its ongoing genocide.

In 2011, a New York Timesop-ed popularized the term pinkwashing, accusing Israel of using pro-LGBTQ rhetoric as a cover-up for itsillegal and brutal occupation of the Palestinian territory. The term describes how colonial powers like the U.S. and Israel use false acceptance of sexual minorities to distract from and justify rapid, brutal expansion. Any queer person who has been an advocate for the rights of Palestinians has encountered this phenomenon: “Try living in Palestine for a day and see how you like it,” online colonialist apologists tell us. “Where are the pride flags in Gaza?”https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/pinkwashing-genocide-gaza

Updated 2024-08-27

2024-07-30 Israel Bombs Beirut in Escalation of Attacks   Israel launched a strike on Beirut, Lebanon’s capital city, on Tuesday, killing one and wounding dozens of others in an escalation of Israel’s months of attacks on Hezbollah forces and civilian areas of Lebanon that have pushed the conflict to the brink of war.

Several sources reported that the attack, which Israel took responsibility for, was carried out by a drone in a populous area of a southern suburb of Beirut. Al Jazeera reported that the attack was carried out on an apartment in the zone where Hezbollah is known to operate.

The Lebanon health ministry reports the attack killed one woman and wounded 68 others. Initial reports have found that Israel’s target, a Hezbollah commander, survived the strike.   https://truthout.org/articles/israel-bombs-beirut-in-escalation-of-attacks/

2022-09-16 Sabra and Shatila massacre: What happened in Lebanon in 1982?       Israeli-backed Phalange militia killed between 2,000 and 3,500 Palestinian refugees and Lebanese civilians in two days.   Shatila, a Palestinian refugee camp, and the adjacent neighborhood of Sabra are located southwest of Lebanon’s capital city Beirut.  The refugees were victims of the 1948 Nakba, or “catastrophe” in Arabic, fleeing the violent ethnic cleansing of Palestine by Zionist militias as Israel was formed.

In June 1982, Israel invaded Lebanon during the country’s 15-year civil war (1975-1990), with the stated aim of destroying the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), which had been based in Beirut and was launching attacks on Israel from southern Lebanon.

The PLO withdrew from Lebanon by September 1, 1982. Assurances were provided by the United States and a multi-national force that the remaining Palestinian refugees and civilians would be protected.

Two weeks later, the Israeli military besieged Sabra and Shatila and provided cover for their allies, a right-wing Lebanese militia called the Phalange, to carry out the mass killings.  But between September 16 and 18, 1982, the refugees, now living in Shatila and Sabra, along with Lebanese civilians, were attacked by a right-wing Lebanese militia, in coordination with the Israeli army. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/9/16/sabra-and-shatila-massacre-40-years-on-explainer

2009-08-02-16 Flooding South Lebanon- Israel’s Use of Cluster Munitions in Lebanon in July and August 2006   Human Rights Watch’s researchers were on the ground in Lebanon throughout the conflict and after, and our findings paint a quite different picture of the IDF’s conduct. Research in more than 40 towns and villages found that the IDF’s use of cluster munitions was both indiscriminate and disproportionate, in violation of IHL, and in some locations possibly a war crime. In dozens of towns and villages, Israel used cluster munitions containing submunitions with known high failure rates. These left behind homes, gardens, fields, and public spaces-including a hospital-littered with hundreds of thousands and possibly up to one million unexploded submunitions.[2] By their nature, these dangerous, volatile submunitions cannot distinguish between combatants and non-combatants, foreseeably endangering civilians for months or years to come.

Cluster munitions are large, ground-launched or air-dropped weapons that, depending on their type, contain dozens or hundreds of submunitions. During strikes they endanger civilians because they blanket a broad area, and when they are used in or near populated areas, civilian casualties are virtually guaranteed. They also threaten civilians after conflict because they leave high numbers of hazardous submunitions that have failed to explode on impact as designed-known as duds-which can easily be set off by unwitting persons. As yet these weapons are not explicitly banned. However, their use is strictly limited by existing international humanitarian law on indiscriminate and disproportionate attacks. Moreover, global concern at the impact of cluster munitions, all too graphically manifested in south Lebanon, is lending impetus to international efforts to develop a legally binding instrument banning those that have an unacceptable humanitarian effect.

Israel continues to have a duty to investigate publicly, independently, impartially, and rigorously these extensive violations of international humanitarian law. Investigation should include a thorough examination of whether individual commanders bear responsibility for war crimes-that is, for intentionally or recklessly authorizing or conducting attacks that would indiscriminately or disproportionally harm civilians.

The continuing failure of the Government of Israel to mount a credible investigation one and a half years after the end of the 2006 conflict in Lebanon-and failure on the Lebanese side of the border to investigate Hezbollah’s compliance with international humanitarian law-reaffirms the need for the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) to establish an International Commission of Inquiry to investigate reports of violations of international humanitarian law, including possible war crimes, committed by both sides during the conflict. https://www.hrw.org/report/2008/02/16/flooding-south-lebanon/israels-use-cluster-munitions-lebanon-july-and-august-2006

Labor Unions

Labor Unions

Updated 2024-02-26

The US Labor Movement Calls for Ceasefire in Israel and Palestine     We, members of the American labor movement, mourn the loss of life in Israel and Palestine. We express our solidarity with all workers and our common desire for peace in Palestine and Israel, and we call on President Joe Biden and Congress to push for an immediate ceasefire and end to the siege of Gaza. We cannot bomb our way to peace. We also condemn any hate crimes against Muslims, Jews, or anyone else.

In issuing this call, U.S. unions are joining the efforts of 13 Congressmembers and others who are calling for an immediate ceasefire.  The basic rights of people must be restored. Water, fuel, food, and other humanitarian aid must be allowed into Gaza, power must be restored, and foreign nationals and Palestinians requiring medical care must be allowed out of Gaza.

The Israeli hostages taken by Hamas must be immediately released. Both Hamas and Israel must adhere to standards of international law and Geneva Convention rules of warfare concerning the welfare and security of civilians.   There must be a ceasefire in Gaza. The cycle of violence must stop so that negotiations for an enduring peace proceed.   The U.S. must act. We call on President Biden to immediately call for a ceasefire.   The road to justice cannot be paved by bombs and war. The road to peace cannot be found through warfare. We commit ourselves to work in solidarity with the Palestinian and Israeli peoples to achieve peace and justice.

Union members come from diverse backgrounds, including Jews, Muslims, and Middle Eastern communities. The rising escalation of war and arms sales doesn’t serve the interests of workers anywhere. In the end, we all want a place to call home and for our children to be safe. Working people around the world want and deserve to live free from the effects of violence, war and militarization.   Thousands of Americans have joined the groundswell of global solidarity demanding a ceasefire now.

It’s the labor movement’s turn to make our voices heard and demand a ceasefire. Together, we can stand for peace, justice, and a better future for working people everywhere.   See the many dozens of Unions that have signed the ceasefire demand,   https://secure.everyaction.com/w1qW7B3pek2rTtv9ny5bqw2

2024-01-30 American Federation of Teachers Joins Call for Gaza Cease-Fire     The union’s executive council called for a cease-fire after months of pressure from educators across the United States.     The result of “significant” input from rank-and-file members of the American Federation of Teachers from across the United States, the 1.72 million-strong union’s executive council on Tuesday unanimously adopted a resolution calling for a cease-fire in Gaza.

The resolution calls for a “negotiated bilateral cease-fire” that would be guaranteed by the international community, including the U.S. and other countries that are supporting Israel’s bombardment of Gaza.   “A cease-fire agreement must include the immediate provision of desperately needed food, water, medical care, clothing, emergency shelter, and other humanitarian aid to Palestinian civilians in Gaza and the release of all hostages abducted by Hamas from Israel on October 7,” reads the statement.

The resolution also reaffirms “the AFT’s support for a two-state solution,” condemns antisemitism and Islamophobia, and demands that all people should be “safe to express dissent” in the United States.   “The conflict should not be used as an excuse to wage political attacks on American colleges and universities, or as a pretext to undermine necessary efforts to increase diversity, promote equity, and advance inclusion,” reads the union’s statement.https://www.commondreams.org/news/union-ceasefire-2667126890

2024-01-22 Labor unions are making unprecedented calls for a ceasefire in Gaza     Before dawn broke on Jan. 14, hundreds of labor organizers and activists convened at the Port of Oakland for a protest to prevent ships carrying weapons bound for Israel from leaving the docks. Activists from the Arab Resource and Organizing Center (AROC) and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), which co-organized the event, kept the momentum going all day. In the afternoon, 200 workers reportedly refused to cross the picket line to help load the ships.

“The labor movement has the power to disrupt supply chains,” said Zachary Valdez, a union steward with United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 2110 based in New York. “Workers can shut everything down.”   The action was an impressive show of solidarity between the labor movement and the Palestinian cause, one of a number of actions in the Bay Area and across the country co-organized or supported by unions in recent months, including teach-ins and other civil disobedience efforts.https://prismreports.org/2024/01/22/labor-unions-unprecedented-calls-ceasefire-gaza/

2024-01-22 SEIU Becomes Largest US Union to Demand Gaza Cease-Fire     With over 25,000 Palestinians killed so far in the U.S.-backed Israeli assault of the Gaza Strip, the Service Employees International Union on Monday became the largest union in North America to join a growing coalition of labor groups calling for a cease-fire.

“SEIU’s almost 2 million members believe that wherever violence, fear, and hatred thrive, working people cannot,” said Mary Kay Henry, the union’s president, in a statement. “We condemn antisemitism, Islamophobia, racism, and hate in all its forms around the world. Our union includes many members and their families—Palestinian and Israeli, Jewish, Muslim, and Christian—who have been impacted by the recent violence.”  “As a union family strongly committed to justice and democracy, we believe all people across the globe deserve to live safely and free of fear, with dignity and respect for their human rights, as well as access to food, water, shelter, medicine, and other necessities,” she continued. “SEIU members understand that working people often feel the impact of war most deeply and bear the brunt of its terrible consequences.” https://www.commondreams.org/news/union-ceasefire

2023-11-30 International Trade Unions Urgently call for Ceasefire in Gaza amidst Ongoing Human Rights Violations   Delegates at 31st World Congress of Public Services International (PSI) which took place in Geneva on October 14 – 18, 2023 took a strong and clear position when they voted to support Resolutions 48 The war in Israel and Palestine and 32 For a Free and Sovereign Palestine State. The resolutions are a call to action that reaffirm PSI’s affiliates’ commitment to justice, human rights, and the self-determination of all people. These resolutions follow the resolution on Palestinian solidarity: Support for the Boycott Disinvestment and Sanctions campaign (BDS) passed at PSI’s 2012 global congress in Durban, South Africa.   https://publicservices.international/resources/news/international-trade-unions-urgently-call-for-ceasefire-in-gaza-amidst-ongoing-human-rights-violations?

2023-11-29 The International Labor Movement Is Mobilizing for a Free Palestine     Global labor unions are responding to Palestinian workers’ calls for solidarity and demanding an immediate ceasefire.

Which side are you on?” a worker with the independent New Seasons Labor Union asked other unionized workers at a November 11 rally in Portland, Oregon. “Now normally this means, ‘Are you on the side of the workers, or are you on the side of the bosses….’ But today when we ask what side are you on, we are asking, ‘Are you on the side of the oppressed, or on the side of the oppressor?’”

The rally was organized by the labor coalition Portland Jobs with Justice (JWJ)* and a group of union activists concerned with the growing death toll in Gaza. A recently extended “humanitarian pause” between Israel and Hamas has been in effect since November 24, but as Truthout reported, “Israeli forces have continued killing Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza throughout the supposed pause.” Moreover, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has said the assault will resume once the temporary truce ends. This means that a true ceasefire has yet to be established.

While many of the groups who joined the rally were familiar to the fight for Palestinian rights, such as the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), what was notable was that this was a rally by and for the labor movement. “At Portland Jobs with Justice, we mean it when we say ‘solidarity to workers everywhere,’” Jill Pham, the executive director of Portland JWJ, told Truthout. “Palestinian trade unions made a call for labor to take a stand and we’ve answered.”    https://truthout.org/articles/the-international-labor-movement-is-mobilizing-for-a-free-palestine/

2023-12-15 Largest Health Union in US Calls for Cease-Fire in Gaza     Days after U.S.-backed Israeli forces conducted its latest raid on a hospital in Gaza and as the spread of diseases including meningitis and chickenpox were reported in the besieged enclave, the largest healthcare union in the United States joined the international call for a cease-fire.

The executive council of 1199SEIU, a union that represents more than 450,000 healthcare workers from five states and Washington, D.C., said all parties involved “must commit to negotiating a permanent, just resolution to this conflict which will enable Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace and build a future.”

“1199SEIU calls for the immediate cessation of hostilities in the Gaza Strip, to allow for urgent humanitarian relief amid the collapse of the territory’s health and other infrastructure,” said the executive council. “International humanitarian law and the laws of war must be upheld without exception, which include the inviolability of healthcare facilities. War crimes committed by one side of the conflict cannot and do not serve as justification for crimes and breaches of the Geneva Conventions by the other.” https://www.commondreams.org/news/health-union-ceasefire

2023-12-01 UAW Becomes Largest US Union to Back Gaza Cease-Fire  Fresh off historic contract victories, the United Auto Workers on Friday became the largest U.S. union to endorse a cease-fire in Gaza as Israel resumed its bombardment of the Palestinian territory following a weeklong pause.  From opposing fascism in WWII to mobilizing against apartheid South Africa and the Contra war, the UAW has consistently stood for justice across the globe,” said United Auto Workers president Shawn Fain.

Fresh off historic contract victories, the United Auto Workers on Friday became the largest U.S. union to endorse a cease-fire in Gaza as Israel resumed its bombardment of the Palestinian territory following a weeklong pause.    The UAW’s cease-fire call makes the 400,000-member union part of a growing segment of the American labor movement that is pushing for a negotiated end to the bloodshed in the Gaza Strip, where U.S.-backed Israeli bombing has killed more than 15,000 people in less than two months. https://www.commondreams.org/news/uaw-cease-fire-gaza

2023-11-16 Why These Teachers Unions Are Demanding a Cease-Fire    When asked why her union voted to call for a cease-fire in Gaza, Marcia Howard, a teacher of 24 years, turned to an education metaphor. “It’s an object lesson for the nation and for other laborers,” she said over the phone, ahead of classes at a Minneapolis area high school, where she teaches language and literature to 11th graders. “The challenge has been for the entire working class to move the nation to do the right thing.”

Howard is the acting president of the teachers chapter of the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers (MFT) Local 59. On October 25, her chapter voted at a general membership meeting to pass a resolution urging an immediate cease-fire, rejecting violence against civilians on all sides and condemning “the role our government plays in supporting the system of Israeli occupation and apartheid, which lies at the root of the Palestinian Israeli conflict.”  https://www.thenation.com/article/activism/labor-teachers-union-ceasefire-gaza-israel/

2023-11-09 American Postal Workers Union Becomes Largest US Union to Call for Gaza Cease-Fire      “We join the calls for an immediate cease-fire, the release of hostages, and urgently needed massive humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza. The cries of humanity demand nothing less.”

The American Postal Workers Union on Wednesday became the largest U.S. union to call for a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip, joining a growing labor movement mobilization against Israel’s assault on the Palestinian enclave.

Leaders of the APWU, which represents more than 200,000 U.S. Postal Service employees and close to 2,000 mail workers in the private sector, said in a statement that their union is “shocked and saddened by the tragic and ongoing violence in Israel and Palestine.”  https://www.commondreams.org/news/postal-workers-gaza-cease-fire
