2024-03-28 I Could Not Stay Silent: Annelle Sheline Resigns from State Dept. over U.S. Gaza Policy A State Department official working on human rights issues in the Middle East resigned Wednesday in protest of U.S. support for Israel’s assault on Gaza. Annelle Sheline, who worked as a foreign affairs officer in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, was not planning on publicly resigning, but her colleagues asked her to “please speak out” against the Biden administration’s unconditional support for Israel. “At the end of the day, many people inside [the State Department] know that this is a horrific policy, and can’t believe that the United States government is engaged in such actions that contravene American values so directly, but the leadership is not listening,” says Sheline. “I’m trying to speak on behalf of those many, many people who feel so betrayed by our government’s stance.”
Sheline describes being moved by the words of Aaron Bushnell, the active-duty U.S. airman who set himself on fire outside the Israeli Embassy in protest of the war on Gaza, who implored everyone to take a stand against genocide. “I have a young daughter, and I thought about, in the future, if she were to ask me, ‘What were you doing when this was happening? The legendary pop music band Pink Floyd’s founding bassist, Roger Waters, is one who has bravely chosen to face this conundrum head-on in defiance of it all; for which, in his case, in the world of music, he has been horrendously castigated, vilified and economically persecuted by those sectors of higher-ups around him in the music industry who accuse Waters of being “one of the most widely-known antisemites in the world”.
Because of the famed rocker’s defiant attitude towards Zionist Israel’s genocide of the Palestinians, as well as other related disparaging, comments he has made in the past about America’s involvement in the war in Ukraine, the record giant BMG that once lionized Waters music, has since dropped its contracture plans to do a 50th anniversary release of Pink Floyd’s historic signature album Dark Side of the Moon; that nevertheless was subsequently released by the UK Label Cooking Vinyl. “They’re trying to cancel me like they cancelled Jeremy Corbyn and Julian Assange, and I will not be cancelled.” Waters candidly declares, “War isn’t about ideology. It isn’t about religion, it’s about money.”
As a result of being a longtime supporter of Palestine and critic of Israel, Waters vehemently continues to deny such accusations; while further causing an uproar in 2023 when he wore a “Nazi-style” uniform on stage in Berlin. Many of his concerts continue to be cancelled over his support for an international boycott of Israel.

Palestinian National Initiative – Wikipedia Palestinian National Initiative is a Palestinian political party led by Mustafa Barghouti. Its formation was formally announced on 17 June 2002 in Ramallah on the West Bank, part of the Palestinian Territories, by Haidar Abdel-Shafi, Mustafa Barghouthi and Ibrahim Dakkak. The PNI views itself as a “democratic third force” in Palestinian politics and opposes the dichotomy between Fatah (which it views as corrupt and undemocratic) and Hamas (which it views as extremist and fundamentalist).

Mapping Palestinian Politics Mapping Palestinian Politics provides an interactive overview of the main Palestinian political institutions and players in Palestine, Israel, and the diaspora. Its goal is to provide an easy-to-use, scene-setting resource for researchers, journalists, and policymakers ahead of significant transformations to the Palestinian political order centred around the anticipated departure of President Mahmoud Abbas in the near term.
Since succeeding Yasser Arafat as Palestinian leader in 2004, Abbas has consolidated his grip on power within the Palestinian Authority (PA), the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), and Fatah. Over the years, Abbas has steadily purged or constrained his political rivals, monopolised the various Palestinian decision-making processes, and pursued increasingly authoritarian measures to stifle dissent and shrink the space for Palestinian democracy and popular participation. This political fragmentation and fragility has been compounded by continued infighting between Fatah and Hamas and the ensuing political and geographic separation between the West Bank and Gaza.
Unsurprisingly, Palestinian public confidence in traditional Palestinian governance structures continues to decline, confronting Palestinian institutions, Abbas’s presidency, and the PA with an unprecedented crisis of legitimacy. Moreover, both Fatah and Hamas – both considered the most dominant Palestinian political parties – have seen a similar decline in popular support. This shift is particularly noticeable among Palestinian youth, who have become increasingly alienated from Palestinian politics and elites.
The ever-present backdrop to Palestinian political fragmentation, of course, remains Israel’s prolonged occupation of Palestinian territory and enactment of policies designed to weaken and divide the Palestinian liberation movement. The result is that, while the Palestinian liberation movement remains united around a unifying vision of ending the occupation, it is currently in disarray over how to achieve this following the failure of the Oslo peace process launched in 1993. This is occurring as different elements vie with each other to succeed Abbas as president of the PA, chairman of the PLO, and head of the ruling Fatah party.
Crucially, there are no institutional mechanisms currently able to manage the upcoming PA leadership transition given that Israeli policies and intra-Palestinian splits for now preclude legislative and presidential elections. Meanwhile, Abbas’s marginalisation of the PLO’s Executive Committee (EC) and Fatah’s Central Committee (CC), and concentration of power within his person, further challenges the ability of the PLO and Fatah to ensure a smooth leadership transition. This democratic atrophication of the nascent Palestinian state – combined with growing popular frustration, shrinking diplomatic horizons for achieving an end to Israel’s occupation, and humanitarian pressures in Gaza – is feeding an increasingly volatile situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT).
This ‘map’ charts Palestinian political actors in order to help understand where Palestinians may turn for organisation and leadership in the post-Abbas period. It is based on research, including publicly available resources and literature, as well as discussions with experts and academics. It aims to give a big-picture view but should not be considered comprehensive or exhaustive.
