Iowa Vote Disarray

ACRONYM GROUP THAT SABOTAGED IOWA CAUCUS BIRTHED BY BILLIONAIRE WHO FUNDED ALABAMA DISINFORMATION CAMPAIGN

The force accused of sowing the confusion and disarray surrounding the first Democratic Party contest of the 2020 election season is a dark money nonprofit called Acronym. It was Acronym that launched Shadow Inc, the mysterious company behind the now-infamous, unsecured, completely unworkable voter app which prevented precinct chairs from reporting vote totals on caucus night.

The exceptionally opaque Acronym was itself created with seed money from a Silicon Valley billionaire named Reid Hoffman, founder of LinkedIn, Hoffman is a top funder of novel Democratic Party social media campaigns accused of manipulating voters through social media. He is assisted by Dmitri Mehlhorn, a corporate consultant who pushed school privatization

Acronym CEO Tara McGowan, a 33-year-old former journalist and Obama for America veteran, is now synonymous with the fiasco in Iowa. She also happens to be married to a senior advisor to Pete Buttieg’s presidential campaign.

Hoffman had just been exposed for funding Project Birmingham, a covert disinformation campaign consisting of false flag tactics that aimed to depress voter turnout and create the perception of Russian interference in the 2017 Alabama senate election.

“Hoffman and Mehlhorn, after all, are not just building a power base that could supplement traditional Democratic organizations, they are, potentially, laying the groundwork to usurp the D.N.C. entirely.”

2020-02-16 SEN. KLOBUCHAR SHIFTS STANCE ON ENGLISH AS OFFICIAL US LANGUAGE AHEAD OF NEVADA CAUCUS

Report: The presidential hopeful was among 17 Democratic Senators to vote in favor of an English-language amendment over a decade ago that would have reversed US President Bill Clinton’s executive order requiring federal agencies to provide materials in languages other than English. US Democratic presidential candidate and Senator from Minnesota, Amy Klobuchar, suggested on Friday that English should not be the national language of the United States, in contradiction to a prior “strong position against” the idea. The Senator’s shift comes one week ahead of the Democratic caucuses in Nevada, in a bid to gather support in a state where Latino Americans make up a significant percentage of voters.

2020-02-13 DID AMY KLOBUCHAR SEND AN INNOCENT TEENAGER TO LIFE IN PRISON?

Questions Mount over Her Record as DA. Klobuchar is also facing mounting scrutiny over her record as a district attorney in Minnesota. The Minneapolis NAACP, Black Lives Matter Twin Cities and other racial justice groups recently called on Klobuchar to suspend her presidential campaign following a shocking investigation by the Associated Press. The AP report centered on the case of Myon Burrell, an African-American teenager who was sentenced to life in prison over the 2002 murder of 11-year-old Tyesha Edwards. Klobuchar led the case against Myon Burrell when she was Hennepin County’s district attorney, but the AP report says she may have mishandled the case and that Burrell could be innocent. The Associated Press report shows how prosecutors had no DNA or fingerprints tying Burrell to the murder and that they relied on jailhouse informants, some of whom have since recanted their testimonies. Burrell has always maintained his innocence.

2020-02-12 NEW HAMPSHIRE RAP-UP

Amy Klobuchar ran a surprising and very respectable third last night, surpassing not just former Vice President Joe Biden, as I predicted at the close of Friday’s debate, but also Elizabeth Warren, whose vote she actually doubled. She also shone in what was effectively her introduction to the larger electorate last night in a speech that made her sound more grounded, empathetic and effective in going after President Trump than any of her fellow candidates. More than any other Democrat, she takes on Trump as a human being—the measure by which he’s weakest.

She introduced herself as a woman with working class roots, of apparently normal talents but exceptional grit.

She dealt with policy less than any of her Democratic rivals, alluding in one brief paragraph to dealing with climate change, making college and healthcare more affordable, and treating immigrants as human beings.

It was the human contrast with Trump that she stressed. When she became president, she vowed, she would take responsibility for errors, wouldn’t pick fights with everyone not singing her hosannas, wouldn’t tear the country apart. And on these rocks—responsibility and empathy—she pledged to build her campaign and provide the contrast to Donald Trump that would lead the Democrats to victory.

I am not an Amy Klobuchar fan as such; I fear that as president she won’t push for the transformative reforms our economy and society clearly need. That said, her pitch, her tone, her manner is more affecting than any that her rivals have exhibited, and ones that may be the most difficult for Trump to counter.

She also presents the Democratic establishment with a post-Biden option not named Buttigieg. My guess is that in coming days and weeks, more of that establishment will join Klobuchar’s column than Mayor Pete’s. Her electoral track record is far better than his, her resume reassuringly longer, and her manner all grown up.

That said, she doesn’t have time or resources to wage the kind of campaign she now needs to wage; doesn’t even have time to raise those resources. Moreover, as she and Buttigieg and Bloomberg combine to divide the non-Sanders vote, it will be Advantage, Bernie—as it was last night even in Bloomberg’s absence.

2020-01-30 AMY KLOBUCHAR BOASTS ABOUT PUTTING MYON BURRELL BEHIND BARS. BUT WHAT IF HE’S INNOCENT?

Before Amy Klobuchar was a United States senator and a Democratic presidential candidate, she was a prosecutor in Hennepin County, Minnesota. It was then, nearly two decades ago, that Klobuchar helped prosecute a teenager named Myon Burrell for murder. She hasn’t forgotten the case. She’s even touted it in the presidential debates to paint herself as a progressive who cares deeply for underserved communities.

But now an investigation by the Associated Press has cast serious doubt on Burrell’s guilt, and criminal justice activists are calling for Klobuchar to suspend her campaign.

The case revolves around the death of 11-year-old Tyesha Edwards, who was killed in the crossfire during a Minneapolis shootout in 2002.

Investigators used jailhouse informants, including a rival gang member, to implicate Burrell as the third man. (One informant later said his 16-year sentence was cut down to three years in exchange for a testimony.) Burrell was eventually sentenced to life in prison, even though no physical evidence tied him to the case.

The Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund evaluated each candidate on four key environmental issue areas: saving wildlife, protecting public lands, ensuring environmental justice and ending the climate crisis.

Senator Amy Klobuchar Overall Grade = D Wildlife = F Public Lands = D Environmental Justice = D Climate = D+

If elected president Senator Amy Klobuchar would be an unmitigated disaster for the environment.

Since becoming a senator in 2007, Klobuchar has consistently taken positions that harm the environment. She has repeatedly introduced legislation that would prematurely remove protections for endangered gray wolves and supports mines that threaten waterways in her own home state. Klobuchar’s climate plan is the weakest of any major candidate running for president and mainly consists of developing market incentives and voluntary measures to achieve “net-zero” emissions by 2050, without a single interim benchmark as scientists recommend.

2020-01-24 AK-46: THE CASE AGAINST AMY KLOBUCHAR

The first thing that is dangerous about Klobuchar is that she gets things done. She has co-sponsored 111 pieces of legislation as of 2018. She has voted for 56% of Donald Trump’s judicial nominees, despite explicit efforts by the President to abolish the rule of the courts themselves. She also sided with Mr. Trump on the United States-Mexico-Canada trade agreement. She was a non-vote on Trump’s highly dangerous repeal of EPA rules on emissions, and a no-show on Trump’s arm sales to Saudi Arabia and U.A.E. and humanitarian aid to the U.S.-Mexico border.

In 2014, Klobuchar sided with Obama’s farm bill that cut 8.7 billion in food stamps. Klobuchar supports copper mining in Minnesota’s greatest treasure—The Boundary Waters.

[Note: 2nd half of article is about Amy. It is not a pleasant picture! Let the author’s summation below suffice absent reading the details]

The Democratic Party goal is a contested convention. This would open the door for the Democrats to nominate Klobuchar themselves, throwing democracy to the wind. Donald Trump would coast to at least four more years and he wouldn’t even need to call on his militia to take out the liberals. The obscure Klobuchar would get her book deal and we would hear a sob story about the meanness of American politics and the danger of rising leftism.

But Amy would not be the one suffering. The working people of the world, the precious earth we call home and the disposable minority would feel the wrath of Trump once more. The ruling class will continue to use fascists as punishment until the working people of the world stand down from even their most reasonable demands.

In short, the danger of Amy Klobuchar is not her own dismal record that endangers people, planet and peace across the world. It is the fact that this record is so damn dismal that she will never get a chance to enact it. Continue to push Ms. Klobuchar down the people’s throats and the winner of 2020 will be cynicism, disengagement and alienation from the political games of the ruling class. This is of course exactly what the mainstream media wants. If they didn’t have a working class to blame, they’d have nothing to write about.

2020-01-20 ‘LOVE LETTER TO CAPITALISM AND WAR’

Progressive Scorn Follows New York Times Endorsement The timing—Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day— caught the eye of author and 350.org found Bill McKibben. “If I were going to go all weak-kneed like the New York Times,” McKibben wrote on Twitter, “I’m not sure I would have picked the day devoted to our most clear-eyed moral leader to do it.” It is “always worth remembering,” he added, “that the NYT editorial board slammed MLK when he came out against the Vietnam War.”

“The language of the NYT endorsement is so violent, just casually endorsing brutal wars and countless human deaths in the borderlands and more deaths at the hands of a ruthless healthcare industry—without even giving these things mention, all while claiming the mantle of civility,” Lazare added in a separate tweet.

Other critics focused on the discrepancy between the urgent action scientists say is needed to address the climate crisis and the backing of Klobuchar, who supports the continued use of fracked gas. Biologist and climate activist Dr. Sandra Steingraber said the endorsement was an act of “climate denial.”

2020-02-03 THE CANDIDATE WHO BEST REPRESENTS ME IS ONLY ONE SAYING IT’S ABOUT US

New York Times Editorial Board endorsed two women for President. At first glance, it appears they are tacitly endorsing simply the idea of a woman president, without regard to a candidate’s position on the issues. You don’t have to be a supporter of either Warren or Klobuchar to know that there are stark differences between the two, when you’re looking beyond gender.

Wanting a woman to be president for the sake of it is a child-like and shallow way to think about representation. You might say a woman represents me. What if we qualify that a little bit further? Does a rich white liberal woman who was a conservative until she was 47 years old represent me? What about one who potentially helped wrongly convict and sentence a black teenager to life in prison?

We’ve been sold the idea that as women we have a responsibility to tackle that glass ceiling together, to support each other unconditionally. But the truth is that the women in this race, like most politicians, are agents of the existing power structures.

2020-01-24 AMY KLOBUCHAR ISN’T GREEN

What few people outside of Minnesota are aware of is Amy’s record on environmental issues. In 2009 she co-sponsored a bill with Republican Sen. John Thune to prevent the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating greenhouse gas emission from man-made sources such as the livestock industry and factories.

In opposition to the science and what the Endangered Species Act says about wolf recovery, in 2010 she pushed to have gray wolves removed from the Endangered Species List, which she accomplished, and between 2012-2014 922 wolves were slaughtered. End of 2014 federal judge Beryl Howell placed wolves back under ESA protections. In 2012 at the Outdoor Heritage Alliance banquet she said she wanted to be the first to kill a wolf. That statement was made at a time nearly 80% of people surveyed in Minnesota said they did not want a wolf hunting or trapping season.

Between 2013-2017 she co-sponsored 3 bills with republican senator John Thune to prevent the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating lead in ammunition and fishing tackle to protect wildlife. In 2013 she co-sponsored the Silviculture Regulatory Consistency Act which amended the Clean Water Act to prohibit the EPA from requiring permits for a discharge of stormwater runoff resulting from silverculture activities.

In 2017, to override the decision by the courts, she co-sponsored a bill with republican Sen. John Barrasso to not only delist wolves once again but this time she included stripping citizens of their legal right to judicial review.

In 2018, she co-sponsored a bill with Sen. Tina Smith to override four separate lawsuits brought by environmental groups against the U.S. Forest Service decision to transfer 6,500+ acres of Superior National Forest lands to PolyMet, a foreign mining corporation. That land exchange violates the Endangered Species Act, the Federal Land Policy and Management Act, the National Environmental Policy Act and the Weeks Act.

She still refuses to stand with tribal leaders in Minnesota and reject the Enbridge Line 3 pipeline. Line 3 would contribute to global warming and pose a threat to clean water and indigenous lands used for hunting, fishing, and harvesting wild rice.

2019-12-04 WHY THE PUNDIT CLASS LOVES AMY KLOBUCHAR

However bleak her polling among the wider population might be, the Minnesota senator can at any rate rest easy knowing she’s doing well within the Pundit Track — a kind of special electorate for which elections are almost entirely aesthetic and political appeal has nothing to do with a politician’s ability to attract votes from real people. In this respect, she is the quintessential Beltway phenomenon: a Highly Electable Candidate with virtually no popular support. Satire hasn’t been this obsolete since Henry Kissinger won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Nonetheless, there’s a bit more at work in Klobuchar’s narrow appeal than the superficial crushes she’s induced in a handful of pundits made giddy by her canned one-liners and tiresome, “aw-shucks” Midwesterner schtick. Run through the most effusive coverage her campaign has received, and you’ll repeatedly find something else in the mix: namely, that Klobuchar is a darling of the pundit class because her principal political message involves telling people wracked by angst and economic insecurity that they can’t and shouldn’t expect anything better.

2019-11-08 A LONG OVERDUE DEBATE ON MEDICARE-FOR-ALL

Affordable health care for all is now at the center of the presidential debate. Two of the top three contenders for the Democratic presidential nomination — Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders — support Medicare for All. The third — Joe Biden — and those hoping to take his place as the leading centrist in the race — Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar — have attacked the plan to contrast their candidacies from Sanders and Warren.

2019-10-23 AMERICANS OVERWHELMINGLY REJECT ANTI-BDS LAWS, POLL FINDS

Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar – who polls between one and two percent – faced stinging criticism from progressives for calling Israel “a beacon of democracy” during last week’s televised debate. Such unquestioning praise of Israel had until recent years been standard fare for ambitious politicians of either main party. But the leading Democrats are heading in the other direction.

Senator Elizabeth Warren said this week for the first time that reducing aid to Israel would be “on the table” if Israel did not stop building settlements on occupied Palestinian land – a war crime. Warren has for years been loath to make any commitment to holding Israel accountable.

2019-07-08 A SECRET MEETING TO PLOT WAR?

On June 5, 16 heads of Jewish organizations joined 25 Democratic senators in a private meeting, which, according to the Times of Israel, is an annual event. All of the Jewish organizations but one were openly declared advocates for Israel and are supportive of its policies. Key groups present included the Council of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations, the Anti-Defamation League, and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. A number of the groups have lobbied Congress and the White House in support of the use of force against Iran, a position that is basically identical to the demands being made by the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The senatorial delegation was headed by Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), currently Senate minority leader who has described himself as the “shomer” or guardian of Israel in the Senate. The 25 senators in attendance constitute one-quarter of the entire deliberative body and more than half of all Democrats serving in it. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), who has emphatically linked her campaign to become the Democratic presidential nominee in 2020 to Jewish and Israeli interests, chaired the gathering.

2019-04-04 SHOW US THE MONEY

In 2016 Bernie rejected corporate PAC money. The move played well with working people concerned about corporate influence in politics, and many Democrats have found it politically prudent to follow suit, including Harris and Booker.

But this presidential cycle, it’s becoming clear that officially rejecting corporate PAC donations is not synonymous with holding industry elites at arms’ length. While the widespread adoption of the practice may lead to decreased influence of corporate PACs themselves in the Democratic Party, it also functions as a means of dissimulation, allowing pro-business Democrats to strike a progressive pose while quietly maintaining bonds with wealthy individual donors.

Senator Amy Klobuchar is also rumored to have been “particularly aggressive on the national donor circuit.” She has sworn off corporate PACs, which has helped her shore up a progressive reputation despite her business connections. Klobuchar’s campaign is a good example of the fragile balancing act Democrats are performing: in public she has been a harsh critic of tech giants, while in private she has maintained a close personal relationship with tech billionaire Sheryl Sandberg, and recently held an expensive fundraiser in San Francisco hosted by Silicon Valley angel investor Tom McInerney. Meanwhile, her social media presence is replete with references to her “homegrown” campaign.

Clearly Harris, Booker, Gillibrand, Klobuchar, and Buttigieg’s rejection of corporate PAC money is not a solid gesture of allegiance to the working class in the fight against capitalist power. It’s a compromise they have to make in the face of a credible challenge from the left. That challenge is posed chiefly by Bernie Sanders, who both refuses corporate PAC money and refuses to solicit donations from industry magnates — and has fared all the better for it. To her credit, Elizabeth Warren has refused to make that compromise.

2019-03-28 WAR, PEACE AND PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES

Senator Klobuchar is the most unapologetic hawk of the senators in the race. She has voted for all but one, or 95%, of the military spending bills since 2013. She has only voted as requested by Peace Action 69% of the time, the lowest among senators running for president. Klobuchar supported the U.S-NATO-led regime change war in Libya in 2011, and her public statements suggest that her main condition for the U.S. use of military force anywhere is that U.S. allies also take part, as in Libya.

In January 2019, Klobuchar was the only presidential candidate who voted for S.1, a bill to reauthorize U.S. military aid to Israel that also included an anti-BDS provision to allow U.S. state and local governments to divest from companies that boycott Israel. She is the only Democratic presidential candidate in the Senate who did not cosponsor Sanders’ Yemen War Powers bill in 2018, but she did cosponsor and vote for it in 2019. Klobuchar received $17,704 in “defense” industry contributions for her 2018 reelection campaign.

2019-02-26 AMY KLOBUCHAR’S DEFENDERS MISTAKE THE PROMISE OF FEMINISM

Sen. Amy Klobuchar’s 2020 presidential bid has been beset by grim reporting on her treatment of staff members since the Minnesota Democrat declared her intent to run earlier this month. Reports of Klobuchar’s abuse of staff members have included allegations that she has thrown office supplies such as phones and binders in the direction of underlings in fits of anger, that she regularly berates her workers, and that she has attempted to sink job prospects for staffers departing her office as revenge for their leaving. Her reputation for ill treatment of those in her employ apparently made it difficult for her to put together a team to staff her presidential campaign.

The reports drew criticism of Klobuchar from most commentators. But some people weren’t convinced. In fact, as former staffers have continued to speak with reporters and allegations of Klobuchar’s office antics have continued to emerge, a specifically feminist line of defense has arisen regarding the senator’s methods of doing business. It’s clear, now, that being a woman isn’t a barrier to claiming the party’s nomination. And that means that there’s no need to defend female candidates who just aren’t principled enough to reliably lead. In Politico, Jennifer Palmieri, the former director of communications for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign, argued that men with Klobuchar’s management habits would wear such reports as a “badge of honor,” and that “those who say that Klobuchar is getting the treatment she deserves also miss another, larger force at play: We still hold women in American politics to higher standards than men, which puts added pressure on female bosses.” And for Vox, editorial director Laura McGann mused: “It’s hard not to wonder, would a male candidate in the same position take the same heat?”

Sexism in our politics was one of the chief organizing narratives in the 2016 election, so it is not surprising to see it revived again ahead of 2020. But with at least four other women in the running in the upcoming Democratic primaries, it’s clear that Clinton’s 2016 jab at the “highest, hardest glass ceiling” changed something important in the party’s imagination: It’s clear, now, that being a woman isn’t a barrier to claiming the party’s nomination. And that means that there’s no need to defend female candidates who just aren’t principled enough to reliably lead. Klobuchar, in other words, needn’t be a hill to die on.

2019-02-22 HOW AMY KLOBUCHAR TREATS HER STAFF

Senator Amy Klobuchar was hungry, forkless and losing patience. An aide, joining her on a trip to South Carolina in 2008, had procured a salad for his boss while hauling their bags through an airport terminal. But once onboard, he delivered the grim news: He had fumbled the plastic eating utensils before reaching the gate, and the crew did not have any forks on such a short flight.

What happened next was typical: Ms. Klobuchar berated her aide instantly for the slip-up. What happened after that was not: She pulled a comb from her bag and began eating the salad with it, according to four people familiar with the episode. Then she handed the comb to her staff member with a directive: Clean it.

“No, I am not for free four-year college for all,” Klobuchar said. “If I was a magic genie and could give that to everyone and we could afford it, I would…I’ve gotta tell the truth. We have a mountain of debt that the Trump administration keeps making worse and worse, and I don’t want to leave that on the shoulders of these kids too.”

While supporting Medicare for All as “something we can look to in the future,” Klobuchar said Monday that her preference would be to build on the Affordable Care Act by creating a new public option plan within Medicaid that individuals and families could buy into, either as a replacement for, or in addition to, the state-level insurance exchanges. On the Green New Deal, Klobuchar said some of the plan’s goals were more aspirational than realistic—intended to “get this debate going,” she said. “Do I think we can cross every ‘T’ and dot every ‘I’ in 10 years? Actually, I think that would be very difficult to do.”

2019-02-08 SENATOR KLOBUCHAR’S STAFF MISTREATMENT REPORTEDLY GOES BACK A DECADE

Senator Klobuchar’s Staff Mistreatment Reportedly Goes Back a Decade, Includes Throwing Binders According to emails seen by BuzzFeed News, Klobuchar consistently rebuked her staff in all caps, often over minor mistakes and at odd hours, frequently sending messages between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. The senator would reportedly become angry if a staffer did not charge her iPad or if they used staples instead of paper clips. Her reputation as a demanding boss was so well known that, in 2015, retired Nevada Senator Harry Reid reportedly told her to reconsider her management tactics.

2020-02-04 BILLIONAIRE PRO-ISRAEL BUTTIGIEG BACKER SETH KLARMAN FUNDS GROUP BEHIND IOWA’S DISASTROUS VOTING APP

The delay in reporting is the result of a failed app developed by a company appropriately named Shadow Inc.

This firm was staffed by Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama campaign veterans and created by a Democratic dark money nonprofit backed by hedge-fund billionaires including Seth Klarman. A prolific funder of pro-settler Israel lobby organizations, Klarman has also contributed directly to Pete Buttigieg’s campaign.

The delay in the vote reporting denied a victory speech to Senator Bernie Sanders, the presumptive winner of the opening contest in the Democratic presidential primary. Though not one exit poll indicated that Buttigieg would have won, the South Bend, Indiana mayor took to Twitter to confidently proclaim himself the victor

2020-02-03 HOW HUGE MEDIA HYPE ABOUT PETE BUTTIGIEG OBSCURED THE SIGNIFICANCE OF HIS DEEP-POCKETED BACKERS

Buttigieg has remained silent about what made the ascent of his campaign possible—the early, major and continuing support from extremely rich people enmeshed with powerful and destructive corporate interests—enabling the Pete for America campaign to get off the ground and gain altitude. Buttigieg’s rise was propelled by the rocket fuel of funding from—and bonding with—wealthy corporate operators, who bundled big checks from other donors and provided an establishment seal of approval that resonated with mainstream media.

The deft spin from the Buttigieg apparatus and the huge media hype about him have obscured the significance of his deep-pocketed backers. Key information about those ties has rarely gotten into the mass-media echo chamber. Yet, occasional reports have offered a window into the big-money support for Buttigieg that he is eager to leave unmentioned.

2020-02-03 THE CREATION MYTH OF THE BUTTIGIEG CAMPAIGN

This weekend, Pete Buttigieg told supporters that he became a viable candidate for president “on the strength of our vision” and “the urgency of our convictions.” And Buttigieg offered reassurance to those concerned about big money in politics, saying: “What we built in 2019 we were able to put together without any contributions from federal lobbyists, or from fossil-fuel executives, and not one dollar from corporate PACs.” But, as Aldous Huxley wrote in the introduction to his classic novel of dystopian technocracy, Brave New World, “the greatest triumphs of propaganda” are accomplished by maintaining “silence about truth.”

Buttigieg may have started his presidential campaign a year ago “with a few volunteers” and “zero dollars in the bank” — but it wasn’t long before plenty of millionaires and billionaires flocked to back him with their own money and piles of checks from wealthy associates.

2019-12-18 THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY HAS A RACE PROBLEM IN THE 2020 ELECTION

Kamala Harris’ departure from the 2020 election drew cheers from many on the left who had associated the California senator with the most heinous policies of the mass Black incarceration state. Harris’ campaign was stocked full of billionaire donors in the earliest stages of the election. Kamala Harris was at one time the darling of the elite and an odds-on favorite to win the hearts and minds of Black American voters.

More and more people are realizing that diversity does nothing to fundamentally change the white supremacist character of the Democratic Party. Thus, the Democratic Party’s race problem extends beyond Harris’ failure. The 2020 election cycle is an anti-Black political affair. Wall Street’s new favorite candidate Pete Buttigieg is polling at 0 percent approval with Black voters and for good reason. Buttigieg has time and time again shown his disdain for Black America, whether by telling a Black woman in South Bend he didn’t need her vote when she questioned him on his support for racist policing or by faking Black political support in South Carolina . Joe Biden is the co-author of nearly every piece of legislation behind the mass Black incarceration state, including the 1986 Anti-Drug Abuse Act and the 1994 Crime Bill .

The Democratic Party is principally responsible for the crisis, which culminated in the rise of Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders in the 2016 presidential election. Bernie Sanders’ meteoric rise in popularity was predicated upon his willingness to challenge the American exceptionalist ethos that presumed neoliberal capitalism to be the most effective means of economic governance worldwide. Democratic Party elites have fiercely defended the racist logic of neoliberal capitalism and have made life more insufferable for key sections of its captive base in the process. Democratic administrations are just as much to blame for the end of welfare, the near end of public education, and the rise of mass Black incarceration as their Republican counterparts. Since as far back as the 1960s, the Democratic Party has operated as the most effective branch of the War Party by finding more covert, yet no less bloody, methods from which to devastate and annihilate humanity. Black Americans and other oppressed people owe nothing to the Democratic Party. The ruling class’ duopoly system won’t let up its white supremacist and imperialist grip on power unless met by the organized wrath of the people.

2019-11-13 JUSTICE DEMOCRATS ACCUSES BUTTIGIEG OF ABANDONING MEDICARE FOR ALL AFTER TAKING ‘TONS OF CASH’ FROM CORPORATE INTERESTS

According to a Business Insider analysis published in August, Buttigieg—who is now running on a public option plan called “Medicare for All Who Want It”—has received more campaign cash from the healthcare industry than any other 2020 presidential candidate aside from President Donald Trump.

Shahid suggested Tuesday that industry cash played a role in Buttigieg’s decision to ditch Medicare for All and go on the attack against the popular proposal in campaign ads and the presidential debates.

2019-08-07 FREEDOM RIDER: WHO’S A WHITE SUPREMACIST?

Americans have an openly racist president, racist foreign policy, racist law enforcement and racist corporate media. The heirs of the slave patrols promise not to give up their guns and politicians either agree with them or cower in fear of the well organized lobby.

American domestic and foreign policies were moving closer and closer to a definition of fascism before Trump ran for office. The United States threatens the world with nuclear annihilation, kills thousands with sanctions, and covers the world with military bases. At home the mass incarceration state created the largest prison system in the world. The surveillance state steadily diminishes civil liberties and human rights. Fascism is nothing new in this nation.

Buttigieg proves that much of the hand wringing about violence is phony. The same people who may shake their fist at the National Rifle Association, or call Trump the dreaded F- word will shrug their shoulders or openly support killing if it is carried out by someone wearing a U.S. military uniform. Those who steadfastly oppose American imperialism and all of its violence are few and far between. At the same time, racism is at the heart of domestic violence. A settler colonial state depended upon gun carrying white people to uphold the social order. The militias referred to in the second amendment were slave patrols needed to enforce the peculiar institution. Those militias continue in the modern day police force and in the minds of millions of people.

Speaking of the police, all the talk of hate crime is a reminder that they commit more of it than anyone else does. Every day one black person and two others of different races will be killed by the police. Yet the term hate crime is rarely applied to the people who kill at will and with complete impunity.

White supremacy is foundational to the United States. Rooting it out requires more self-awareness than this country is currently able to muster.

Bernie Sanders was placed on the debate with Wall Street’s three favorite candidates: Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and Pete Buttigieg. Far from a randomized selection process, the debates show that the ruling class is encircling Sanders with its political dogs with the hopes that the trio can collectively weaken his chances for the nomination.

2020-02-20 WHO WON THE NEVADA DEMOCRATIC DEBATE? OUR PANELISTS’ VERDICT

Mike Bloomberg demonstrated tonight that, in his life as a billionaire, he must not have had to deal with any character-building pressures in a very long time. All of the money in the world could not purchase charisma enough to make up for the dull and glum presentation he gave tonight.

Bloomberg was an existential threat to our democracy because of his ability to purchase everything from talent to silence. But no one could look at the debate tonight and honestly believe that the former mayor would stand a chance against Donald Trump. No one could look at Bloomberg’s performance and believe that this man could inspire the movement necessary to win in November.

Who won the Nevada Democratic debate? Our panelists’ verdict

2020-02-07 BLOOMBERG’S BID TO BUY THE PRESIDENCY

In a recent national poll, Bloomberg tied for third place with Elizabeth Warren with 14 percent of support among potential voters. With Bloomberg’s rapid ascent as a major presidential contender, Donald Trump, the Democratic establishment, and the mainstream press are all taking notice.

According to the ad tracking firm Advertising Analytics, Bloomberg has already spent an unprecedented $300 million of his own money on TV, radio, and digital advertising. Bloomberg, who is self-financing his campaign, is basing it on his self-proclaimed success as a technocratic, data-driven mayor and global business leader.

2020-02-07 Bloomberg’s Bid to Buy the Presidency

.

2020-02-06 OF COURSE BLOOMBERG’S AN OLIGARCH—AND HE’S COMING FOR YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY

By any common definition, Bloomberg’s an oligarch. He wants to buy your vote. Based on his record, he’s also coming for your Social Security. With Democrats celebrating Bloomberg’s return to the Democratic Party, his candidacy, and his pledge to up to a billion dollars to defeat Trump. (Few, if any, of these Democrats are repeating a line of attack often used against Sanders—that he’s not really a Democrat—despite the fact that Bloomberg is a former Republican who only rejoined the Democratic Party two years ago.)

With an estimated net worth of more than $60 billion, Bloomberg is the twelfth-richest person on the planet and the ninth-richest person in the United States. That’s a pretty small group of people. But do they control the country?

As Bloomberg told Face the Nation in 2013: No program to reduce the deficit makes any sense whatsoever unless you address the issue of entitlements, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, interest payment on the debt, which you can’t touch, and defense spending. Everything else is tiny compared to that. Bloomberg has called for raising the retirement age, a move that would cut Social Security benefits for all retirees and create physical hardship for many older workers.

Bloomberg has sometimes embraced tax increases, but he has long opposed tax hikes that reduce inequality by targeting the wealthy. In fact, he called the idea “class warfare” in a 2012 op-ed for the Wall Street Journal.

Given his virtually unlimited resources, Bloomberg could theoretically win both the nomination and the presidency for $12 billion.

Democrats should also be troubled by Bloomberg’s authoritarian streak. As mayor, Bloomberg had a history of suppressing peaceful demonstrations, sometimes with brute force. His police spied on Muslim gatherings and engaged in racially biased “stop and frisk” tactics that expanded sevenfold under his leadership. He took advantaged of privatized public spaces, including Zuccotti Park, to suspend basic liberties within them, while renting out his police force to the banks the movement was protesting. His unconstitutional suppression of Occupy even included the needless destruction of the movement’s library.

2020-02-05 THE WINNER: MIKE BLOOMBERG HE WASN’T EVEN IN IOWA, BUT WITH THE PREDICTABLE COLLAPSE OF JOE BIDEN, MAYOR MIKE HAD A BETTER NIGHT THAN MAYOR PETE.

He wasn’t even in Iowa, but with the predictable collapse of Joe Biden, Mayor Mike had a better night than Mayor Pete.

Bloomberg is doubling his paid staff to 2,000, and doubling his anticipated campaign spending to unheard-of sums approaching a billion dollars. Bloomberg’s hunch that Biden would crater paid off. So the center lane will now be a contest between him and Buttigieg, with Sanders and Warren contending for the left.

2020-02-01 ‘DEFINITION OF A RIGGED SYSTEM’: SANDERS CAMPAIGN HITS BACK AFTER DNC CHANGES DEBATE RULES FOR BILLIONAIRE LATECOMER MIKE BLOOMBERG

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) announced Friday afternoon that the criteria for making the debate stage will no longer include a requirement about individual donors—allowing Bloomberg, whose campaign is largely self-funded, to join the candidates if his polling numbers reach the new threshold.

The Intercept‘s Ryan Grim, citing Federal Elections Commission data, noted Bloomberg donated $325,000 to the DNC in November 2019.

How much money did candidates like Julián Castro and Cory Booker have to spend chasing donor thresholds that could have been spent building organizations in early states?” “Remember when they wouldn’t even think of changing them for like Cory Booker “This is what we mean when we talk about the DNC cheating, obviously and out in the open.”

.

2020-02-01 DNC SHOWING ITS TRUE COLORS (AGAIN)

The Democratic elites so fear Bernie’s political revolution they are changing the rules to promote a Wall Street centrist.

On Friday, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) showed it has learned nothing from the 2016 election disaster. The same DNC that recently complained it could not change the rules to allow the candidates to debate the gravest challenge facing humanity—the global climate emergency—has now rigged the rules to make it easier for Michael Bloomberg—a billionaire—to qualify for the Feb. 19 Nevada debate. This is an outrage.

Here’s what else scares the Democratic establishment: allowing a climate debate where the two most progressive candidates in the race will shine. They’re afraid of a debate where the climate emergency candidate will dominate.

All of the candidates who have qualified for the Feb. 7 New Hampshire debate have said they want a nationally televised, prime time climate-specific debate. The American voting public needs such a debate to help separate the Earth defenders from the pretenders. We need to know which candidate is best prepared to lead a climate emergency response.

A few short months ago, more than 11,000 scientists from 153 nations sounded the latest worldfire alarm by declaring we are in a “climate emergency.” The scientists wrote: “The climate crisis has arrived and is accelerating faster than most scientists expected. It is more severe than anticipated, threatening natural ecosystems and the fate of humanity.”

Humanity is foolishly playing with fire. Meanwhile, the DNC keeps dithering, while the world keeps burning.

2019-12-24 MIKE BLOOMBERG EXPLOITED PRISON LABOR TO MAKE 2020 PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN PHONE CALLS

Democratic presidential candidate Mike Bloomberg used prison labor to make campaign calls. Through a third-party vendor, the Mike Bloomberg 2020 campaign contracted New Jersey-based call center company ProCom, which runs calls centers in New Jersey and Oklahoma.

Two of the call centers in Oklahoma are operated out of state prisons. In at least one of the two prisons, incarcerated people were contracted to make calls on behalf of the Bloomberg campaign.

People incarcerated at the Dr. Eddie Warrior Correctional Center, a minimum-security women’s prison with a capacity of more than 900, were making calls to California on behalf of Bloomberg. The people were required to end their calls by disclosing that the calls were paid for by the Bloomberg campaign. They did not disclose, however, that they were calling from behind bars.

“The use of prison labor is the continued exploitation of people who are locked up, who really have virtually no other opportunities to have employment or make money other than the opportunities given to them by prison officials,” said Alex Friedmann, managing editor of Prison Legal News and an advocate for incarcerated people’s rights.

The Department of Corrections website lists the maximum monthly wage for the incarcerated at $20 dollars a month, but another policy document says there is a maximum pay of $27.09 per month.

2019-12-11 WILL THE DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION BE BOUGHT BY THE OLIGARCHS?

From three different vectors, the oligarchy is on the march to capture the Democratic presidential nomination. Pete Buttigieg has made big gains. A timeworn ally of corporate power, Joe Biden, is on a campaign for his last hurrah. And Michael Bloomberg is swooping down from plutocratic heights.

Those three men are a team of rivals—each fiercely competitive for an individual triumph, yet arrayed against common ideological foes named Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.

The obvious differences between Buttigieg, Biden and Bloomberg are apt to distract from their underlying political similarities. Fundamentally, they’re all aligned with the nation’s economic power structure—two as corporate servants, one as a corporate master. Bloomberg!

Writing for The Nation magazine this week, Jeet Heer aptly noted that Bloomberg “is utterly devoid of charisma, has no real organic base in the Democratic Party, and is a viable candidate only because he’s filthy rich and is willing to inundate the race by opening up his nearly limitless money pit.”

More powerfully than any words, Bloomberg’s brandishing of vast amounts of ad dollars is conveying his belief that enormous wealth is an entitlement to rule.

2019-12-09 BLOOMBERG CONDONED SEXUAL ASSAULT BY NYPD

Some of the perverts among the NYPD used Stop and Frisk as an excuse to invade the intimate body areas of black and Latinx women.

In a 195-page decision, Judge Shira Scheindlin found that the New York Police Department had resorted to a “policy of indirect racial profiling” in the way it stopped people in minority communities, and she ordered that sweeping reforms be imposed on the department and that a monitor oversee the process.” This upset Michael Bloomberg.

Despite the protests of Bloomberg, Bratton and others, her ruling has stood. She ended this Nazi practice, which was used against the Jews in the streets of Paris and Berlin during the 1930s and 40s and during the early 1900s when Irish cops picked on New Yorkers who looked Jewish.

2019-12-02 SAY NO TO BLOOMBERG

Bloomberg says he wants to stop Donald Trump but he’s really running to stop Bernie Sanders. “Bloomberg targeted black people for political gain with whites and he created great suffering in the process.”

In 2002 Michael Bloomberg was sworn in as mayor of New York City. In that same year the men known as the Central Park Five had their sentences vacated. They all served between 6 and 13 years in prison for a rape they did not commit. They sued New York City for the wrongful convictions but the Bloomberg administration refused to pay. They had to wait until he left office in 2014 to receive their $40 million settlement.

Bloomberg has an estimated net worth of $55 billion, a figure which makes him among the richest people on the planet. Like the old joke about the 900 pound gorilla he can do whatever he wants, including prevent a progressive from getting the nomination.

Bloomberg says he is “Running for president to stop Donald Trump and rebuild America.” In reality he is running to stop Bernie Sanders because he knows that given a level playing field Sanders would emerge triumphant.

He described New York as “a luxury product” and he acted accordingly by accelerating the displacement of black people through gentrification. In order to make sure that black New Yorkers got the memo and quickly left town he instituted the notorious stop and frisk police program. At the height of stop and frisk terrorism nearly 700,000 people, nearly all of them black and Latino, were stopped without probable cause.

Bloomberg’s approach of buying off opposition allowed him to get away with doing far worse. Al Sharpton was among those who took Bloomberg’s hush money. The National Action Network was a recipient of Bloomberg’s philanthropy and Rev. Sharpton was silent while every black person in town was a potential target for police abuse.

The corporate media always follow orders from the ruling elites. They were instructed to promote Joe Biden as being more electable but his campaign has been a gigantic embarrassment. Other “centrist” Democrats wring their hands because they can’t agree on a candidate while Bloomberg has decided that if he wants this thing done right he had better do it himself.

2019-11-27 MICHAEL BLOOMBERG’S PRESIDENT RUN RAISES QUESTIONS ABOUT DEMOCRACY AND A FREE PRESS

The 77-year-old former Republican has decided that he is the perfect candidate to prevent president Obama from achieving a second term. Bloomberg has a long history of support for conservative positions, including endorsing George W. Bush’s War on Terror and defending Israel’s 2014 assault on Gaza.

With a net worth of nearly $55 billion and he owns a huge eponymous media network, one of the largest in the world. It was noted that if someone had made half a million dollars per day since the United States’ founding in 1776, they would still be far poorer than Bloomberg himself is. Hackett concluded, “that kind of wealth shouldn’t be allowed to leverage success in our primaries.”

Yet Bloomberg’s run for President highlights another danger: that of freedom of the press. As the New Republic warned, the 2,700 journalists working directly under him in his extensive media network are in an impossible position. Can they truly report fairly and in an unbiased manner on the presidential race when their owner has such an obvious and important stake in its proceedings? If history is any judge, the answer to that will be “no.” Silvio Berlusconi, for instance, used his vast media empire to propel him and keep him in power as the Prime Minister of Italy for nine years.

2019-11-08 MIKE BLOOMBERG SIDES WITH FOSSIL FUELS AND FRACKING

Food & Water Action Climate & Energy Program Director Mitch Jones issued the following statement: “As mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg opposed efforts to ban fracking. He also supported the Keystone pipeline. Earlier this year he confirmed his support for continued use of fossil fuels.

It is clear that Bloomberg’s reputation as a climate warrior is drastically overblown. He has been and he remains a pro-fracking, pro-pipeline, pro-nuclear billionaire who favors half measures and false solutions because he’s more interested in protecting his friends in the C Suite than he is in stopping climate change.

2019-10-18 THE FIERCE URGENCY OF LESS, THE THREE B’S (BIDEN, BLOOMBERG, BUTTIGIEG) OF CAN’T-GO-BIG

The new moderate meme is that big proposals are not only unenactable but also disqualify those who make them from the presidency. That was the attack that Pete Buttigieg delivered last night against Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Beto O’Rourke. “Why unnecessarily divide this country over health care when there’s a better way to deliver coverage for all?” he asked Warren. “We can’t wait” for more comprehensive programs to be codified and implemented, he told O’Rourke, swatting down Beto’s proposal to outlaw assault weapons.

“The presidential aspirants are not short on big ideas,” Bloomberg wrote. But voters must demand they explain how they intend to move from proposing plans to actually implementing them, including passing them through Congress. Those who dodge the question by speaking of revolution and the bully pulpit aren’t up to the job. (Apparently, Bloomberg thinks neither Theodore nor Franklin Roosevelt was up to the job.)

And despite the objections of Bloomberg and Buttigieg, if you don’t mobilize voters for ambitious change and use the bully pulpit to build support for major reforms, you can’t even get incremental fixes.

At bottom, though, the aversions of Mayor Pete and Mayor Mike to the ambitious plans of Sanders and Warren aren’t strategic; they’re ideological and self-interested. Neither believes the American economy needs the upending it requires to produce a more egalitarian economy and politics. Mayor Pete’s campaign funding depends too much on those at the top who don’t wish to relinquish a share of their wealth and power; Mayor Mike is the very personification of the funders Mayor Pete relies on.

So when the three B’s of Fighting for Less—Biden, Bloomberg, and Buttigieg—tell us to demand less, they are laying the groundwork for winning nothing.

2014-05-28 IN LEAKED BLOOMBERG INTERNAL NEWS MEMOS, “THERE IS NO SUCH COUNTRY” AS PALESTINE

According to New York Times coverage on the weekend, Bloomberg “called the growing international movement for a boycott against Israel ‘an outrage’ that is ‘totally misplaced,’ but ducked a question about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.” Maybe because Bloomberg’s operation in Dubai is a cash cow.

The earlier Bloomberg memo says there “is no such country” as Palestine. MAY 16, 2002 Avoid referring to Palestine, as in “Israel’s incursion into Palestine,” because there is no such country. Instead, describe the occupied areas by their names, as in the West Bank or Gaza Strip. Palestinian people or Palestine Authority is OK.

It seems like an attempt to avoid using the term Palestine in any way that would signify that it ought to be or can be a country on its own. In ’02 the policy was to call Palestine the WB and or Gaza. The ’10 directive is even stranger. It looks like something out of an AIPAC primer. The land historically belonged to ancient Israel and Judah? It also belonged to a lot of other people. Plus, no reference to partition, ’48, ’67 occupation or millions of human beings living under Israel’s boot that have no vote.

2010- 11-18 FREEDOM RIDER: PRESIDENT BLOOMBERG

If the United States is going to be run for the profit of Wall Street and the super-rich, why not dispense with all the groveling intermediaries? Let the plutocrats rule, directly. Multi-billionaire New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg personifies government “of the rich, by the rich and for the rich,” and hopes to take the model nationwide. (This is the guy who told Rupert Murdock that Barack Obama is the “most arrogant” man he ever met.)

The prospect of a president whose only qualification is the ability to amass great wealth would mean that America has become a full fledged plutocracy, with no pretense of representative democracy. Government will be of the rich, by the rich and for the rich.

Bloomberg has his own wealth to use as a bottomless pit of campaign funding. His last mayoral election cost him $70 million and with an estimated net worth of $20 billion, money would literally be no object.

Bloomberg will also face an electorate which is disgusted by both parties and overly enamored of wealthy people. Uninformed Americans want rich politicians who won’t be “beholden” to other interests, unaware that the people’s interests are more likely to be addressed if politicians have an obligation to some constituency. If not they can act without any checks and balances, and that would be an absolute disaster for what is left of our democratic system.

It isn’t clear if Bloomberg could win outright or be just another Ross Perot, and act as a spoiler depriving one of the two major party candidates of election victory. If Obama and the Democrats actually worked for the benefit of working people, money wouldn’t be enough to defeat them.

But the Democrats have bailed out Wall Street, escalated wars and watched as millions lose their jobs and their homes. Now they bring the year to a close with a deficit reduction commission, dubbed the “cat food” commission, which has presented proposals that will destroy the small safety net which exists in this country.

In the absence of a Democratic Party that works for the public’s interest, it wouldn’t be surprising if voters looked to a rich man to solve their problems. The two major parties differ only in the details, but are locked in a pitched battle to continue enriching individuals and corporations.

Trail of Tears

In 1835, a few self-appointed representatives of the Cherokee nation negotiated the Treaty of New Echota, which traded all Cherokee land east of the Mississippi for $5 million, relocation assistance and compensation for lost property.

To the federal government, the treaty was a done deal, but many of the Cherokee felt betrayed; after all, the negotiators did not represent the tribal government or anyone else.

“The instrument in question is not the act of our nation,” wrote the nation’s principal chief, John Ross, in a letter to the U.S. Senate protesting the treaty. “We are not parties to its covenants; it has not received the sanction of our people.”

Nearly 16,000 Cherokees signed Ross’s petition, but Congress approved the treaty anyway.

By 1838, only about 2,000 Cherokees had left their Georgia homeland for Indian Territory. President Martin Van Buren sent General Winfield Scott and 7,000 soldiers to expedite the removal process.

Scott and his troops forced the Cherokee into stockades at bayonet point while whites looted their homes and belongings. Then, they marched the Indians more than 1,200 miles to Indian Territory. Whooping cough, typhus, dysentery, cholera and starvation were epidemic along the way, and historians estimate that more than 5,000 Cherokee died as a result of the journey.

Port Chicago Disaster and Mutiny

The Port Chicago disaster was a deadly munitions explosion that occurred on July 17, 1944, at the Port Chicago Naval Magazine in Port Chicago, California, United States. Munitions detonated while being loaded onto a cargo vessel bound for the Pacific Theater of Operations, killing 320 sailors and civilians and injuring 390 others. Most of the dead and injured were enlisted African American sailors. A month later, unsafe conditions inspired hundreds of servicemen to refuse to load munitions, an act known as the Port Chicago Mutiny. Fifty men‍—‌called the “Port Chicago 50″‍—‌were convicted of mutiny and sentenced to 15 years of prison and hard labor, as well as a dishonorable discharge. Forty-seven of the 50 were released in January 1946; the remaining three served additional months in prison. During and after the trial, questions were raised about the fairness and legality of the court-martial proceedings. Widespread publicity surrounding the case turned it into a cause célèbre among certain Americans; it and other race-related Navy protests of 1944–45 led the Navy to change its practices and initiate the desegregation of its forces beginning in February 1946.

In 1994, the Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial was dedicated to the lives lost in the disaster.

On June 11, 2019, A concurrent resolution sponsored by Representative Mark DeSaulnier was agreed upon by the 116th congress. The resolution recognized the victims of the explosion and officially exonerated the 50 men court-martialed by the Navy.

Panama – U.S. Invasion

The United States Invasion of Panama, codenamed Operation Just Cause, lasted over a month between mid-December 1989 and late January 1990. It occurred during the administration of President George H. W. Bush and ten years after the Torrijos–Carter Treaties were ratified to transfer control of the Panama Canal from the U.S. to Panama by 1 January 2000. During the invasion, de facto Panamanian leader, general, and dictator Manuel Noriega, who for a long time worked with the Central Intelligence Agency, was deposed citing racketeering and drug trafficking. Following the operation, the Panama Defense Forces was dissolved and President-elect Guillermo Endara was sworn into office.

The December 1989 US invasion of Panama really was a permission slip for Washington—led by both Republicans and Democrats—to waste whatever potential benefits the end of the Cold War might have brought. Remember the “peace dividend”? The Berlin Wall had just fallen on November 9, and George H.W. Bush, the “realist,” was quick to use Panama to leverage the collapse of Soviet rule in Eastern Europe, declaring the end of “sovereignty” and the right of the United States to invade other countries in the name of “democracy” and “human rights.”

December 20, 1989 is a day of infamy for the people of Panama. On that day, the most powerful military in the world descended on poor black communities in the middle of Panama City and carried out one of the most brutal war crimes of the late 20th century. Many in the U.S. have forgotten or never even knew that when George H. Bush ordered U.S. troops into Panama, Panamanians experienced their version of 9/11. By the time the carnage ended a few weeks later, U.S soldiers had murdered more than 3,000 Panamanians – changing the lives of Panamanians forever.

Panama Papers

The Panama Papers are 11.5 million leaked documents that detail financial and attorney–client information for more than 214,488 offshore entities. The documents, some dating back to the 1970s,were created by, and taken from, Panamanian law firm and corporate service provider Mossack Fonseca.

e journalists on the investigative team found business transactions by many important figures in world politics, sports and art. While many of the transactions were legal, since the data is incomplete, questions remain in many other cases; still others seem to clearly indicate ethical if not legal impropriety. Some disclosures – tax avoidance in very poor countries by very wealthy entities and individuals for example – lead to questions on moral grounds.

Other offshore shell company transactions described in the documents do seem to have broken exchange laws, violated trade sanctions or stemmed from political corruption, according to ICIJ reporters. ndividuals and entities may open offshore accounts for any number of reasons, some of which are legal but ethically questionable.

The documents contain personal financial information about wealthy individuals and public officials that had previously been kept private. While offshore business entities are legal (see Offshore Magic Circle), reporters found that some of the Mossack Fonseca shell corporations were used for illegal purposes, including fraud, tax evasion, and evading international sanctions.

The Panama Papers, the giant leak of documents, exposes offshore holdings of about 150 kings, crown princes, presidents, prime ministers, politicians, public officials, industrialists, bureaucrats, arms dealers, ganglords, businessmen, tea traders, jute giants, celebrities, film stars and players – all are players in the infamous world of property.

The leak, a collective investigation by hundreds of journalists, specifically the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), of more than 11 million records of about half-a-century, reveals the extent of big property holders’ use of shell companies to conceal their amassed wealth, launder money considered illegal even in the eyes of the laws their political arrangements enact, and their evasion of taxes with the help of “more than 214,000 offshore entities connected to people in more than 200 countries and territories”.

The Panama tax haven leaks reveal a lot about the lawlessness of the rich, as well as the ideological bias of the western press. “Vladimir Putin’s name appears nowhere, but the corporate media used his image repeatedly to drum up interest in what is an otherwise newsworthy story.” Americans are conspicuous by their absence from the story. That’s because rich people in the U.S. can avoid taxes “legally in Wyoming, Delaware or Nevada.”

October 1980 Election Surprize _Iran Hostage Release Delay

The House task force was concluding a year-long investigation into claims that Ronald Reagan’s 1980 presidential campaign had interfered with President Carter’s negotiations to free 52 Americans held hostage in Iran. A mixed bag of Iranian officials, foreign intelligence agents and international arms dealers had alleged a Republican deal behind Carter’s back. But the task force had decided there was “no credible evidence” to support allegations that the Reagan campaign had blocked Carter’s possible “October Surprise” of an election-eve hostage return.

Carter’s failure to free those hostages over 444 days had sealed his political doom and boosted Reagan from a neck-and-neck race to a resounding electoral victory. The hostages’ release, as Reagan was completing his Inaugural Address on Jan. 20, 1981, opened a floodgate of patriotic fervor that reshaped the political landscape and made Reagan a hero.

The possibility that this pivotal moment in modern American history had resulted from a nearly treasonous dirty trick had drawn understandably angry denials from Reagan-Bush loyalists — and even from Democrats who feared that the public would lose faith in politics if the charges proved true.

So, with a collective sigh of relief, the House task force debunked the charges by adopting an elaborate set of alibis for the key players, particularly the late CIA director William J. Casey, who had run Reagan’s campaign. One of the Casey alibi dates was nailed down, according to the task force, because a Republican operative had written Casey’s home phone number on a piece of paper that day, although the operative admitted that he had no recollection of reaching Casey at home.

To the shock of the task force, the six-page Russian report stated, as fact, that Casey, George Bush and other Republicans had met secretly with Iranian officials in Europe during the 1980 presidential campaign. The Russians depicted the hostage negotiations that year as a two-way competition between the Carter White House and the Reagan campaign to outbid one another for Iran’s cooperation on the hostages. The Russians asserted that the Reagan team had disrupted Carter’s hostage negotiations after all, the exact opposite of the task force conclusion.

As described by the Russians, the Carter administration offered the Iranians supplies of arms and unfreezing of assets for a pre-election release of the hostages. The Iranians “discussed a possible step-by-step normalization of Iranian-American relations [and] the provision of support for President Carter in the election campaign via the release of American hostages.”

But the Republicans were making separate overtures to the Iranians, also in Europe, the Russians claimed. “William Casey, in 1980, met three times with representatives of the Iranian leadership,” the Russians wrote.

At the Paris meeting in October 1980, “R[obert] Gates, at that time a staffer of the National Security Council in the administration of Jimmy Carter and former CIA director George Bush also took part,” the Russians said. “In Madrid and Paris, the representatives of Ronald Reagan and the Iranian leadership discussed the question of possibly delaying the release of 52 hostages from the staff of the U.S. Embassy in Teheran.”

Both the Reagan Republicans and Carter Democrats “started from the proposition that Imam [Ruhollah] Khomeini, was forced to acquire American weapons, spares and military supplies by any and all possible means,” the Russians wrote. According to the report, the Republicans won the bidding war.

“After the victory of R. Reagan in the election, in early 1981, a secret agreement was reached in London in accord with which Iran released the American hostages, and the U.S. continued to supply arms, spares and military supplies for the Iranian army,” the report continued. The deliveries were carried out by Israel, often through private arms dealers, the Russians said. Spares for F-14 fighters and other military equipment went to Iran from Israel in March-April 1981 and the arms pipeline kept flowing into the mid-1980s.

“Through the Israeli conduit, Iran in 1983 bought surface-to-surface missiles of the ‘Lance’ class plus artillery of a total value of $135 million,” the report said. “In July 1983, a group of specialists from the firm, Lockheed, went to Iran on English passports to repair the navigation systems and other electronic components on American-produced planes.” Then, in 1985, the weapons tap opened wider, into the Iran-contra shipments.

MOVE Philadelphia Bombing

On Monday, May 13, 1985, a Pennsylvania State Police helicopter dropped two bombs on a Philadelphia house where members of the MOVE black liberation organization lived. The resulting fire grew out of control, resulting in the deaths of 11 people, including five children, and the destruction of 65 area homes. An independent investigation of the event heaped criticism on the city’s administration and at least for a time earned Philadelphia an unwanted reputation as “the city that bombed itself.”
