2024-04-23 Will the Freedom Flotilla Sail to Gaza?   We are calling on countries around the world to pressure Israel to allow us “free and safe passage” to deliver much-needed humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

The non-violence training to join the Freedom Flotilla Coalition’s ships to Gaza has been intense. As hundreds of us from 32 countries gathered in Istanbul, we were briefed about what we might encounter on this voyage. “We have to be ready for every possibility,” our trainers insisted.

The best scenario, they said, is that our three ships—one carrying 5,500 tons of humanitarian aid and two carrying the passengers—will reach Gaza and accomplish our mission. Another scenario would be that the Turkish government might cave to pressure from Israel, the United States, and Germany, and prevent the boats from even leaving Istanbul. This happened in 2011, when the Greek government buckled under pressure and 10 boats were stalled in Greece. With our boats docked in Istanbul today, we fear that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who recently suffered a crushing blow in local elections, is vulnerable to any economic blackmail the Western powers might be threatening.

Another possibility is that the ships take off, but the Israelis illegally hijack us in international waters, confiscate our boats and supplies, arrest and imprison us, and eventually deport us.      https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/will-freedom-flotilla-sail-gaza

2024-08-07 Norman Finkelstein Revealed: Iran’s Final _ Fatal Blow To Israel Is Coming! The IDF’s SUICIDE Move   Norman Finkelstein Revealed: Iran’s Final _ Fatal Blow To Israel Is Coming! The IDF’s SUICIDE Move  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5LMtxSHEQA

2024-06-24 Beyond the Rhetoric: Standing in Integrity: Norman Finkelstein and Daniel Maté     This conversation is released with the premiere of the documentary ‘Where Olive Trees Weep’, along with 21 days of talks on Palestine with leading historians, spiritual teachers, trauma therapists, poets, artists and more.

Beyond the Rhetoric: Standing in Integrity  With Norman Finkelstein and Daniel Maté

Political scientist Norman Finkelstein and author Daniel Maté exposes the lies and propaganda which obscure the reality in occupied Palestine. They will challenge the false narratives used to justify Israel’s brutal oppression of the Palestinian people, from the distortion of history to the whitewashing of war crimes in Gaza. They show how the dehumanization of Palestinians, the censorship of critics, and the perversion of antisemitism claims to silence dissent all depend on a scaffolding of deception that must be torn down. It’s time for intellectual honesty and unflinching integrity in the fight for justice in Palestine.

‘Where Olive Trees Weep’ is a poignant, heartbreaking film about the struggles and resilience of Palestinian people under Israeli occupation. It explores themes of loss, trauma, and the quest for justice. We follow, among others, Palestinian journalist and therapist Ashira Darwish, grassroots activist Ahed Tamimi, and Israeli journalist Amira Hass.  It features Dr. Gabor Maté as he offers trauma-healing work to Palestinian women tortured in Israeli prisons.

The program expands on the themes explored in the film and provides a larger historical and social context. Access to the program and the film is by donation.

2024-06-14 Israel, the ICC and the global structures of power | Norman Finkelstein | The Big Picture S4E12    We are living through a moment of social and political upheaval – one that has somehow aligned the Houthi rebels in Yemen, South Africa’s greatest legal minds and students across the wealthiest campuses in the world.  They’re all fighting for Gaza, and against an increasingly isolated Israeli government and its Western backers. So are we witnessing a historic tipping point?

Norman Finkelstein has documented the Israel-Palestine conflict for over 4 decades, with a particular focus on Israel’s actions in Gaza.  As the son of Holocaust survivors, he became particularly critical of Israel’s use of history as a propaganda tool to shut down critique – something he documents in his book ‘The Holocaust Industry’.  Since October 7, he’s been one of the most prolific voices speaking out – accusing Israel of carrying out a Genocide – and describing Gaza as a concentration camp.

In this episode of The Big Picture podcast, we speak to him about the value of international law, the historic turning point in Palestinian advocacy and his view on Israel’s moral argument for its own existence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GeCzBHoKBY

2024-04-19 Palestine Talks | Norman Finkelstein   Activist, writer and public intellectual Norman Finkelstein speaks candidly about his early upbringing in New York City — raised by parents who were both Holocaust survivors — and how that has led to his tireless pro-Palestinian solidarity work, including his “forensic scholarship” of Israeli criminality and the related abuse of Holocaust memory.

Towards the end of the discussion, Finkelstein offers important though difficult advice to those who embrace “the values of truth and justice,” which — as he alludes — are ideals that do not come with any significant personal “reward”.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOdRk7Wptjg

2018-01-19 Norman Finkelstein: The “Big Lie” about Gaza Is That The Palestinians Have Been the Aggressors     Extended interview with scholar Norman Finkelstein, author of the new book, “Gaza: An Inquest into Its Martyrdom.” The book has just been published as Israel is facing a possible International Criminal Court war crimes probe over its 2014 assault on Gaza, which killed more than 2,100 Palestinians, including over 500 children.  Democracy Now! is an independent global news hourhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZGPZRkqJzY

Divestment

Divestment

Updated 2024-08-24

2024-05-15 University of California official says system has $32 billion in holdings targeted by protesters    Investments in weapons manufacturers and a wide array of other companies by the University of California targeted by students protesting the Israel-Hamas war represent $32 billion – or nearly one-fifth – of the system’s overall assets, the system’s chief investment officer says.

UC Chief Investment Officer Jagdeep Singh Bachher unveiled the estimate Tuesday at the first public Board of Regents meeting since nationwide pro-Palestinian student protests began in April. The calculation was in response to a letter he received last month from the UC Divest Coalition, which is scrutinizing the system’s overall $175 billion in assets.   The group asked for the system to halt its investments in weapons manufacturers, the investment firms Blackstone and BlackRock, and two dozen companies across the entertainment, technology and beverage industries.

Bachher said that would apply to investments that include: $3.3 billion in holdings from groups with ties to weapons manufacturers; $12 billion in U.S. treasuries; $163 million in the investment firm BlackRock and $2.1 billion in bonds that BlackRock manages; $8.6 billion from Blackstone and $3.2 billion from the other 24 companies.https://www.yahoo.com/news/university-california-official-says-system-232316555.html

2024-05-13 Christian School to Divest From Businesses Profiting From Israel, Hamas War    Christian seminary in New York affiliated with Columbia University recently announced plans to divest from Israel and other companies involved in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas militants.  On May 9, the Union Theological Seminary in New York announced that its board of trustees had endorsed a divestment plan from “companies profiting from war in Palestine/Israel.”

“Over the decades, we have developed what are called ‘socially responsible investment (SRI) screens’ to express our values and not financially support damaging and immoral investments,” the seminary said in a statement. “With respect to companies that are profiting from the present war in Palestine, we continue to hold these standards high and have taken steps to identify all investments, both domestic and global, that support and profit from the present killing of innocent civilians in Palestine, whose numbers are now over 34,000—and a humanitarian crisis of ever-growing magnitude.”

Pro-Palestinian protests began at Columbia University on April 18 before spreading to college campuses across the U.S., with students calling for schools to divest from Israel.  https://www.newsweek.com/union-theological-seminary-cut-ties-israel-columbia-campus-protests-1899854?

2024-05-07 Students Demanding Divestment: You’re on the Right Side of History   Israel has damaged or destroyed every university in Gaza. But no university president has denounced Israel’s genocide or supported the call for divestment.

Stanford students are rising up for peace and justice. They have established a “People’s University” encampment and they are demanding that Stanford: (1) explicitly condemn Israel’s genocide and apartheid; (2) call for an immediate ceasefire, and for Israel and Egypt to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza; and (3) immediately divest from the consumer brands identified by the Palestinian BDS National Committee and all firms in Stanford’s investment portfolio that are complicit Israeli war crimes, apartheid and genocide.

At this moment in history, there are two related military occupations occurring simultaneously – 5,675 miles apart. One is Israel’s ongoing 57-year occupation of Palestinian territory, which is now taking the form of a full-fledged genocide that has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians. The other is at Columbia University, where the administration has asked the New York Police Department to occupy the school until May 17. Both occupations are fueled by the Zionist power structure. Both have weaponized antisemitism to rationalize their brutality.

The students at Columbia are demanding that the university end its investments in companies and funds that are profiting from Israel’s war against the Palestinians. They want financial transparency and amnesty for students and faculty involved in the demonstration. Most protesters throughout the country are demanding an immediate ceasefire and divestment from companies with interests in Israel. More than 2,300 people have been arrested or detained on U.S. college campuses.  https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/israel-gaza-war-bds

2024-5-06 Antony Blinken Greeted by Protestors for Palestine   On Today’s Show: US Secretary of State in San Francisco, greeted by protesters with the mock blood of Palestinians. The East Bay City of Richmond, California takes a bold step to divest from companies that do business with the Israel apartheid State. 2024-05-06 War, Money, and US Universities’ Response to Israel Divestment Protests   Yes, the peaceful protesters are interrupting the status quo—setting up encampments, even occupying university buildings. For instance, at Columbia University, students actually renamed the occupied Hamilton Hall, declaring its new name to be Hind’s Hall, after Hind Rajab, a 6-year-old Palestinian girl killed by Israeli armed forces, along with the rest of her family (and several aid workers), as they were fleeing their home in Gaza. The point of the protests is, indeed, to change the world: to stop U.S., including university, support of the devastating “war” (i.e., carnage). They’re not trying to eliminate an enemy but, rather, illuminate the situation—putting themselves on the line to do so.

Some of the responses to the protests are definitely illuminating. A statement from UCLA’s Palestine Solidarity Encampment, for instance, noted:

The life-threatening assault we face tonight is nothing less than a horrifying, despicable act of terror. For over seven hours, Zionist aggressors hurled gas canisters, sprayed pepper spray, and threw fireworks and bricks into our encampment. They broke our barriers repeatedly, clearly in an attempt to kill us.

Furthermore, the account continued: “Campus safety left within minutes, external security the university hired for ‘backup’ watched, filmed, and laughed on the side as the immediate danger inflicted upon us escalated. Law enforcement simply stood at the edge of the lawn and refused to budge as we screamed for their help. . . .

“The university would rather see us dead than divest.    “https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/campus-protests

Crime Against Humanity

Crime Against Humanity

Updated 2024-07-16

2024-05-06 ‘This Is a Crime Against Humanity’: 600,000 Children in Line of Fire as IDF Moves on Rafah      Humanitarian organizations and United Nations officials are warning that the lives of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian children—nearly all of whom are sick, injured, or malnourished—are in grave danger as Israeli forces on Monday moved to forcibly evacuate the overcrowded Gaza city of Rafah ahead of an expected ground invasion.

An estimated 600,000 children are believed to be sheltering in Rafah in terrible conditions and under the near-constant threat of Israeli airstrikes, which rocked the city and killed dozens of people—including at least eight kids—hours before the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued its evacuation directives.

“They’re being told to move, quote unquote, to a ‘humanitarian zone.’ That’s a unilaterally declared humanitarian zone,” James Elder, a spokesperson for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), said in a BBC appearance Monday. “That’s not a humanitarian zone where humanitarians have been able to provide the services they need to. I’ve been talking to colleagues and friends in Rafah this morning, and they’re terrified.”  https://www.commondreams.org/news/rafah-children-idf

2024-05-02 Columbia’s President Sold Out Students and Faculty to Far-Right McCarthyism    The right is weaponizing antisemitism as a way of furthering its campaign to suppress the kind of freedom of thought and speech on campus that threatens its authoritarian goals of turning this country Christian, conservative, straight, and white.  Not only is the slaughter in Gaza getting lost in the growing fog of hysterical speech about antisemitism on American college campuses, but so is the fact that Arab and Muslim students are being targeted, too.

Shafik’s craven performance in front of Republican lawmakers opened a Pandora’s box of troubles. The student protesters swelled in numbers and erected their encampment. Faculty members wrote outraged opinion pieces condemning Shafik’s behavior. And when she called in the police to arrest students, more students than ever joined the protests all over the country.   Then, on April 24, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson visited Columbia with Republicans Mike Lawler, Nicole Malliotakis, and Anthony D’Esposito (and even Foxx from North Carolina), acting as if some kind of terrible riot had gone on here.

I looked behind me at the encampment on the other side of campus. In front of the tents on the grass, the students had erected a sign listing what they called “Gaza Encampment Community Guidelines.” These included: “No desecration of the land. No drug/alcohol consumption. Respect personal boundaries.” And most significantly, “We commit to assuming the best intentions, granting ourselves and others grace when mistakes are made, and approaching conflict with the goal of addressing and repairing.” Designated faculty and students stood at the entrance to make sure no outsiders got in, and that nobody entered the encampment unless they had read and agreed to that list of commitments. The noisiest people on campus were the thronging media. But nobody and nothing was out of control.  https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/columbia-sold-out-far-right

2024-05-02 Professors, Speakers Cut Ties With Universities Over Police Crackdowns on Protests     “What President Shafik did at Columbia moved the whole world a step closer to universally criminalizing direct action, and direct action is the ONLY thing that is going to help the world halt global heating,” said one climate scientist as she canceled a planned speech at the school.

Repercussions of American universities’ crackdowns on student protesters are becoming increasingly evident this week as faculty members, public speakers, and others who collaborate with higher education institutions announced they would cut ties with schools that have repressed students’ constitutional right to protest against Israel’s U.S.-backed assault on Gaza.

Last week, more than 2,100 academics from across the globe signed a statement expressing solidarity with student and faculty protesters and supporting an “academic and cultural boycott” of the school.   https://www.commondreams.org/news/speakers-cut-ties-universities

2024-04-22 Columbia Faculty Walk Out Over Student Suspensions, Arrests for Gaza Protests     The Guardian reported that “hundreds of members of the teaching cohort at Columbia walked out in solidarity with the students who were arrested” while “students put protest tents back up in the middle of campus on Monday after they were torn down last week when more than 100 arrests were made.”

While expressing gratitude for solidarity actions, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar—whose daughter was suspended—said that “this about the genocide in Gaza and the attention has to remain on that.”

Over 34,000 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed by U.S.-backed Israeli troops, and Columbia University students have been suspended and arrested by New York Police Department officers in recent days for protesting the slaughter—which led to a walkout by the Ivy League institution’s faculty on Monday.

Yonah Lieberman, co-founder of IfNotNow, a Jewish-led U.S. group that organizes against Israel’s apartheid, declared: “Solidarity with these faculty members. Shame on establishment politicians and agitators who are smearing the anti-war protest at Columbia as anything other than what it is: a courageous stand for freedom and peace.”   https://www.commondreams.org/news/columbia-university-protests

2024-04-21 Edward Said Warned Against Anti-Palestinian McCarthyism       Said’s legacy reads today as a scathing condemnation of the hypocrisy of U.S. liberal institutions, their moral corruption, and the hollowness of the very values that they profess to teach.

Students across the United States are rising up against Israel’s genocide in Gaza, bringing to memory the student movements of the 1960s. From Columbia to Brown, from Yale to Harvard, students are staging sit-ins, hunger strikes, class walkouts, and interfaith prayers, demanding an end to U.S. support for Israel and the complicity of their academic institutions in the ongoing genocide.

While some U.S. institutions are treading a delicate path, the Columbia University administration, led by President Minouche Shafik, has violently cracked down on its own students, summoning the NYPD to mass arrest over 100 students, and suspending others with a 15-minute notice. In an unprecedented brutal crackdown on free speech on campus, the police destroyed solidarity encampments and student belongings, while charging arrested students with “trespassing” on the campus that they are charged a whopping tuition of more than $60,000 a year to attend!

In its attempt to appease far-right extremists in Congress, and to save Columbia from “being cursed by God,” as a Republican Congressman warned Shafik, Columbia has sided with genocide, thus undermining its own legacy of safeguarding free speech and peaceful protest on campus   https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/edward-said-anti-palestinian-mccarthyism

2024-05-01 Cutting Ties With Israel, ‘One Colombia Shows Far More Courage Than the Other Columbia’   “The times of genocide and extermination of an entire people cannot return,” said leftist Colombian President Gustavo Petro. “If Palestine dies, humanity dies.”

In sharp contrast with Columbia University in New York City, Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Wednesday announced the imminent suspension of diplomatic relations with Israel over that country’s assault on Gaza.

“The government of change informs that as of tomorrow diplomatic relations with Israel will be broken… for having a government, for having a president who is genocidal,” Petro told a crowd in the capital Bogotá during an International Workers’ Day event, referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “The world could be summed up in a single word that vindicates the necessity of life, rebellion, the raised flag, and resistance,” the leftist leader added. “That word is called Gaza. It is called Palestine. It is called the children and babies who have died dismembered by the bombs.”  https://www.commondreams.org/news/colombia-israel-gaza

Bowman, NY Rep. Jamaal

Updated 2024-07-15

2024-06-22 Bowman Calls for Primary Voters to Reject AIPAC Money at Rally With Sanders, AOC   Congressman Jamaal Bowman, a prominent critic of Israel’s war on Gaza, called on Saturday for voters to defeat the influence of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, which has poured millions of dollars into defeating him, as he made his final campaign push before the Democratic primary in New York’s 16th Congressional District on Tuesday.

The contest has seen one of the largest influxes of money of any U.S. House of Representatives primary race in history, mainly because of AIPAC’s super PAC, the United Democracy Project (UDP), which has spent more than any interest group has ever spent on a House race—more than $14 million, according to The New York Times.

“AIPAC is scared to death,” Bowman (D-N.Y.) said at an animated rally in the Bronx in which Sen. Bernie Sander (I-Vt.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) also spoke. “They are afraid they have already lost,” he said, citing public opposition to AIPAC’s agenda. https://www.commondreams.org/news/jamaal-bowman-rally

Biden Redline

Biden Redline

Updated 2024-07-15

2024-05-20 Biden’s ‘Red Line’ President Joe Biden said he would draw a “Red Line” if Israel invaded Rafah in southern Gaza. Yet there is already a river of Palestinian blood from over 220 days of Israel’s genocidal assaults in every area of Gaza. There will be an ocean of blood as Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu carries out his threatened all-out assault on Rafah, which appears to be in process. What is Biden waiting for?

Two days after Israel invaded and closed the Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza, in open violation of established international treaties, Biden’s only response was that he wouldn’t go ahead with plans to provide Israel with 1,800 more 2,000-pound bunker-buster bombs, capable of destroying entire city blocks, and 1,700 500-pound bombs.

Even after Israel closed all access for desperately needed food, medicines and other supplies to Gaza, the Biden administration manipulated Congressional investigations into Israel’s use of U.S.-provided weapons in Gaza, although their use violated humanitarian law. The administration actually said that while there was “reasonable” evidence to conclude Israel had breached the international laws protecting civilians in Gaza, they “couldn’t link specific U.S. weapons to individual attacks by Israeli forces in Gaza.”

As a result, the administration claimed leeway in whether or not to restrict more offensive weapons to Israel, and Biden backed away from limiting weapons to Israel other than 2,000-pound bombs. This doublespeak has characterized most of the Biden administration’s response to Israel’s genocide in Gaza. When Vice President Kamala Harris called for an immediate six-week ceasefire between Israel and Hamas on March 4, other U.S. officials were quick to publish statements downplaying her remarks. Harris has issued no public statements regarding a ceasefire since then. Her claim that there was “clearly a humanitarian catastrophe” in Gaza fell by the wayside. https://www.workers.org/2024/05/78744/
