Rapid growth among certain racial and ethnic groups means the nation is becoming more diverse more quickly than expected.

Census data from 2020 shows America is growing, but not equally.

The data, released in August by the Census Bureau, will provide insight into local communities, help officials redraw congressional and state political lines, and be used to determine much federal funding for the next decade.

Major population gains in the Southern and Western regions of the country bolstered a 7.4 percent national increase in population over the past decade, with some of the biggest changes in Texas, Florida, Georgia and Washington state. Despite the gains, the pace of national growth slowed to its lowest rate since the 1930s.

The data shows that as the country grows, its racial makeup is changing. In an increasing number of places, no individual race constitutes a large majority of the population.

The biggest driver of both growth and diversity: the Hispanic population.

Hispanic population booms across the country

In 1990, Hispanics accounted for 9 percent of the U.S. population. Now, they account for 18.7 percent, becoming the largest non-White minority group and the second-fastest-growing single-race demographic group.

Hispanics also account for half of the nation’s population growth in the past decade, showing increases in nearly every county across the United States.5M people2M+300k people+150kPopulation –growthCounty population

In Florida, the Hispanic population also flourished — and not just in the southern part of the state. Central Florida is home to a large Puerto Rican population, which continued to grow after Hurricane Maria caused many to flee the island in 2017. New Cuban residents also added to Florida’s population. In recent history, Cubans have been in the top 10 immigrant groups in the United States. The top four counties of residence for Cuban immigrants — approximately two-thirds of the Cuban American population — are all in Florida.

Immigration accounts for only a portion of the growth in the Hispanic population.

Instead, most of the growth stems from natural increases — more births than deaths — which is reflected in the diversity of the youngest Americans. Over half of the U.S. population under 15 identified as non-White for the first time in 2019. In the census a year later, almost 53 percent of people under 18 identified as non-White. Of that group, Hispanics made up half.

Widespread Asian population growth

The Asian and Pacific Islander population saw a growth pattern similar to Hispanics but on a much smaller scale. Despite relatively small numbers, Asians grew at rates faster than any other single-race group.

Seattle’s booming technology industry is attracting new residents to the area. The software developer career path is Seattle’s most common job, and in the United States 1 in 3 software developers are Asian, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The tech scene in Seattle also has the highest percentages of foreign-born workers in the United States.

A large portion of growth in the Asian population can be attributed to immigration. Since 2009, the increase of Chinese and Indian immigrants made annual Asian immigration counts higher than such numbers for Hispanics. Almost 60 percent of Asian Americans were born in another country.

The Asian American population grew by 36 percent over the last decade, and projections do not show gains slowing down anytime soon. By 2060, the Asian population in the United States is expected to pass 46 million, nearly four times what it was in 2000.

Black Americans move away from rural counties

Before the turn of the 21st century, the Black population was the largest minority group in the nation. Black Americans gained roughly 2.3 million people since 2010 but have roughly stayed consistent in share of the U.S. population, hovering around 12 percent, for the past three decades.5M people2M-300k people-150kPopulation –lossCounty population

The movement of Black Americans away from Chicago echoes patterns of a “reverse Great Migration.” Slowly beginning in the 1970s and continuously gaining traction, the group is moving to the suburbs and back to the South. Black people are moving to the South for a multitude of reasons: greater economic opportunity, lower cost of living, and high cultural and familial affinities.

While the Black population is shifting across the United States, it is also changing shape. Black Americans who identify as a single race are aging, adding five years to their median age since 2000, while multiracial Black people are younger than any other group — they have a median age of 16. Hispanics are the largest non-White U.S. population under 18, followed by Black people as the second-largest non-White group in the same age range.

American Indian and Alaska Native population saw modest gains nationwide

In the past decade, the American Indian and Alaska Native population increased by almost 11,000 people. It’s the smallest growth the group has seen since at least 1990, with only a 0.5 increase. After a 5 percent undercount of people living on reservations in the 2010 Census, the bureau prioritized accuracy in 2020.5M people2M+300k people+150kPopulation –growthCounty population

American Indians continue to move away from reservations and other tribal lands to cities because of increased educational and employment opportunities elsewhere, as well as more comprehensive health care.

Most American Indians and Alaska Natives reside in the West, the only region that gained population among this group. The small 3.3 percent increase in the West was bolstered by only three states — New Mexico, Idaho and Montana — that grew at rates above the national average.

The American Indian and Native Alaskan population has continuously grown since 1960, when Americans were able to choose their racial identity on census forms. It is unclear which factors primarily contribute to the population increases — high births, low deaths and immigration counts on their own would not suffice. Some researchers say it could be a cultural shift: less stigma and more pride in being of native identity.

White population falls for the first time

This census marks the first decade the total number of people who identify as non-Hispanic Whites declined. The population decreased by 5.1 million. It is the first time this has happened in the 230 yearssince the enumeration started.5M people2M+300k people+150kPopulation –growthCounty population

The White population suffered from two disproportionate characteristics that defined their decade: high mortality and low fertility. The shifts mean the group is becoming older, and the nation’s younger generations are becoming less White over time.

As recently as 1990, three-fourths of the U.S. population identified as White, a proportion that is rapidly declining. Now, only 57.8 percent of the population identifies as White. Roughly4 in 10 people identified as non-White in this census, a figure that is predicted to continue growing as the nation moves toward the next decennial census in 2030.

Mass Shootings and Gun Violence

While media coverage has focused on the symptoms of this problem, we must look at the broader issues around the epidemic of violence in this country. 

The United States ranks second on the list of countries with the highest number of gun deaths. In 2021, 45,011 Americans died of gunshot wounds and there were 692 mass shootings.

In the 10 years since Sandy Hook, 2,654 mass shootings have occurred. Just one day before the shooting, the FBI reported a 52.5% increase in active shooter incidents in the U.S. from 2020 to 2021. It is essential to point out that due to federal legislation in 1997 stating “none of the funds made available for injury prevention and control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) may be used for research on gun violence” that the federal government essentially blocked funding for preventive measures until 2019 when Congress specifically allocated funds to the CDC more than twenty years later.

“It is necessary to implement strategies guided by research on risk factors that contribute to violence, easy access to healthcare, and community-based programs to support families such as developing and evaluating programs and settings in schools, workplaces, prisons, neighborhoods, clinics, and other relevant contexts to prevent violence,” said Green Party US Steering Committee Co-Chair Margaret Elisabeth.

The Green Party’s vision includes “building communities that nurture families, generate good jobs and housing, and provide public services; creating cities and towns that educate children, encourage recreation, and preserve natural and cultural resources; building local governments that protect people from environmental hazards and violent crime; and motivating citizens to participate in making decisions.”

 “We need to stop normalizing gun violence and discuss real systemic solutions. Let’s talk about how those grieving and traumatized need a society that gives them the space to grieve and eventually heal without the worries of rushing back to work to put food on the table or if they can take the time off work to pick up their child from school until the day they graduate college. We must address the root cause to finally put an end to gun violence,” stated Green Party US Steering Committee Co-Chair Garret Wassermann.

The Faith Alliance for a Moral Economy, an initiative of EBASE, invites you to the Prayer Vigil and Community Speakout to Prevent Homelessness on Thursday, June 9th 5:00-6:00 PM at Todos Santos Plaza in Downtown Concord closer to the Willow Pass side.

We are hosting this event to promote passing a strong anti-harassment ordinance in the City of Concord to protect vulnerable tenants from abusive landlords. That’s why we are supporting a policy with strong enforcement mechanisms, including awarding attorney fees when tenants win lawsuits. Along with that, the faith community wants to show its support for housing rights measures to prevent homelessness.

Along with prayers from clergy, we will hear from speakers including tenants and unhoused Concord residents about why a strong and enforceable anti-harassment ordinance and other renter protections are important. There will also be an altar and a table with ways to write notes about people you know experiencing housing insecurity to add to the altar. Everyone encouraged to attend.

Why is this ACTION important NOW?

1. We need the Concord City Council to pass a tenant anti-harassment ordinance with strong enforcement mechanisms which will be on the agenda next Tuesday June 14th at 6:30 pm so that residents have a tool to fight back against intimidation, threats and abuse by a few unscrupulous landlords, which often results in tenants being pushed out of their homes.

2. The City of Concord also just released a draft of its Housing Plan as part of the Housing Element, a plan that will determine what actions the City takes to promote fair and affordable housing from 2023 to 2031. The Plan shows that the displacement of renters, immigrants, and people of color is the number one fair housing problem in Concord. Yet, the draft still doesn’t do enough to stop displacement and promote racial and social equity. Now is a critical time to tell the City what low-income renters, immigrants, and people of color really need to stay put and thrive in Concord. This Plan will also be discussed Tuesday June 14th at the Concord City Council meeting, and public comment on this plan is only open until June 27th.

which can help alleviate environmental damage!

opposite of addiction is connection

“Put a rat in a cage and give
it 2 water bottles. One is just water and one is water laced with heroin or
cocaine. The rat will almost always prefer the drugged water and almost always
kill itself in a couple of weeks. That is our theory of addiction.

Bruce comes along in the ’70s and said, “Well,
hang on. We’re putting the rat in an empty cage. It has nothing to do. Let’s
try this a bit differently.” So he built Rat Park, and Rat Park is like heaven
for rats. Everything a rat could want is in Rat Park. Lovely food. Lots of sex.
Other rats to befriend. Colored balls. Plus both water bottles, one with water
and one with drugged water. But here’s what’s fascinating: In Rat Park, they
don’t like the drugged water. They hardly use it. None of them overdose. None
of them use in a way that looks like compulsion or addiction. What Bruce did
shows that both the right-wing and left-wing theories of addiction are wrong.
The right-wing theory is that it’s a moral failing, you’re a hedonist, you
party too hard. The left-wing theory is that it takes you over, your brain is
hijacked. Bruce says it’s not your morality, it’s not your brain; it’s your
cage. Addiction is largely an adaptation to your environment.

Now, we created a society where significant
numbers of us can’t bear to be present in our lives without being on something,
drink, drugs, sex, shopping… We’ve created a hyper consumerist,
hyper individualist, isolated world that is, for many of us, more like the first
cage than the bonded, connected cages we need.

The opposite of addiction is not sobriety. The
opposite of addiction is connection. And our whole society, the engine of it,
is geared toward making us connect with things not people. You are not a good
consumer citizen if you spend your time bonding with the people around you and
not stuff. In fact, we are trained from a young age to focus our hopes, dreams,
and ambitions on things to buy and consume. Drug addiction is a subset of
that.”

End war on drugs: for legalization, treatment of
abuse

Greens call for an end to the “war on
drugs”, legalization of drugs and for treating drug abuse as a health
issue. The “war on drugs” has been an ill-conceived program that has
wasted billions of dollars misdirecting law enforcement resources away from
apprehending and prosecuting violent criminals, while crowding our prisons with
non-violent drug offenders and disproportionately criminalizing youth of color.

Nation is waking up to the end of the war on
marijuana

The silence on the illegal mass spying on
Americans by the NSA, and no doubt the CIA and other intelligence agencies, was
deafening. The lack of discussion about the legality of the drone program
showed once again the U.S. is a nation that violates the law rather than abides
by it. The failure to discuss the mistaken mass incarceration that is so
racially disproportionate was a missed opportunity as the nation is waking up
to the end of the war on marijuana.

Cannabis/Hemp is to be legalized

Cannabis/Hemp is to be legalized, regulated and
controlled like cigarettes and alcohol. Until this happens we advocate that
medical marijuana be made a prescription drug that doctors may prescribe to
their patients.

2022-06-05 Campaign Thank You Letter to All My Supporters

Dear Friends,

I want to thank you for taking a moment to sign my nomination papers, making a donation, endorsing my candidacy, or otherwise supporting me.   With your support I was able to qualify as the Green Party candidate for the new California Congressional District 10 and was on the June 7, 2022, primary ballot.

Election officials will be counting the votes by the time you receive this letter.  On your ballot, for those in CA District 10, you have only seen my name along with the incumbent Democratic Mark DeSaulnier. The Republican candidate was disqualified. He was a Ukrainian immigrant, but he didn’t meet the 7 years as a U.S. citizen to qualify.

With two of us on the ballot, you might think I am guaranteed one of the top two positions on the November general election ballot.  However, when no Republican qualified for the ballot, a local Republican was asked to run as a write-in candidate.   Normally write-in candidates have little chance, but I am vulnerable as a Green candidate because of the Green Party’s small voter registration base.   

My ability to withstand the write-in challenge will depend on two factors:

  1. How well a write-in campaign has been run by the Republicans.
  2. How many Democrats and Independents decide to vote for me as symbolic protest against the Democratic Party’s inaction on many important issues! Also, how many are not happy with the present condition of our society concerning the economy, the pending climate catastrophe and the promotion of war between Russia and Ukraine that could risk a nuclear war?   

Mark and I have known each other for over 10 years going back to his State Senator days when he took a personal interest in my local community of Bay Point.  I have nothing but good things to say about Mark as a person and I think he has represented Contra Costa residents in an honorable manner all through his long political career.

So why am I spending thousands of $ and many months of campaigning to run against Mark for a second time?   Mark has made a career of not rocking the boat against the established powers in the Democratic Party, especially in California.  Mark has created an aura around him as a polite, friendly progressive.   Mark, in all sincerity, tends to personally vote in Congress as a good progressive.   However, it is difficult to ever find him publicly opposing the corporate controlled Democratic Party leadership on any of those same progressive issues. These are progressive issues that continue to fail despite Mark’s vote.   Mark avoids controversy and never makes any loud public stand on many progressive issues considered controversial by the corporate run Democratic Party.  Mark is no Bernie Sanders or Alexandria Casio Cortez!   Mark is almost too nice to be in the U.S. House of Representatives currently, where corporate owned Republicans and Democrats control the leadership with iron grips!   

So why am I running?   America and the world are at some dangerous crossroads politically, militarily, and environmentally!  There is no time or value in being a timid person in Congress.  I will be an issue-oriented bullhorn in Congress and with the people in my district and beyond.   I will be outspoken about both the pending climate catastrophe and the near total seizure of our government, media, & society by the Military-Industrial-Media-Prison complex that President Eisenhower warned us about 60 years ago! 

As a Green, I will owe no allegiance to the powers politically in control, Democratic or Republican. I will expect them to do what is best for the people and environment and I will not accept anything less!   I realize that I will be among the very few in Congress who are willing to fight for what is right, but I will fight like hell to make a positive difference! I can certainly promise you that!  

I offer my website as my introduction as to the bullhorn I will be in Congress.  You might not agree with everything I say and support, but I base my opinions on facts and experts, especially those who are censored and banned by the MIMP complex. I welcome your respectful comments and concerns!   I enjoy issue-oriented debates and will always remain open to consider serious fact-based different viewpoints.  My viewpoints didn’t happen overnight, but from a lifetime exposure to countless experiences, information, and viewpoints from others! I have 50 years as a serious progressive activist!
