Rashida Tlaib Attacked

Rashida Tlaib Attacked

Updated 2024-08-29

2024-08-02 Rashida Tlaib: A Profile in Courage    During the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., famously said, “The time is always right to do what is right.”  While she may have been a lone protest voice during Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s speech to a joint session of Congress last week, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) did what is right.

Most mainstream news reporting either ridiculed her or only briefly mentioned her silent protest displaying a sign with “War Criminal” printed on one side and “Guilty of Genocide” on the other. Missing was any analysis as to whether she was right. Let’s look at the facts.    https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/rashida-tlaib-courage

2024-07-24 Tlaib: Netanyahu Should Be Sent to The Hague, Not Addressing Congress   Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Michigan) has said that it is “utterly disgraceful” that Congress has invited “war criminal” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address the chamber as he continues committing genocide in Gaza.

In a fiery statement on Tuesday, Tlaib said that Netanyahu should be arrested and sent to the Hague to be tried for war crimes — far from being given the distinction of speaking to Congress, which he is slated to do Wednesday evening.

“Netanyahu is a war criminal committing genocide against the Palestinian people. It is utterly disgraceful that leaders from both parties have invited him to address Congress. He should be arrested and sent to the International Criminal Court,” said Tlaib, the only Palestinian American in Congress.https://truthout.org/articles/tlaib-netanyahu-should-be-sent-to-the-hague-not-addressing-congress/

2024-02-06 Tlaib Calls for DOJ Hate Crime Probe After Palestinian American Stabbed in Texas     “The constant dehumanization of Palestinians, Arab, and Muslim Americans has real, dangerous consequences,” the Michigan Democrat warned.   Democratic Michigan Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib on Tuesday joined a leading Muslim advocacy group in urging the U.S. Department of Justice to open a hate crime investigation following the stabbing of a young Palestinian American man in Texas.   https://www.commondreams.org/news/palestinian-american-stabbed

2023-11-21 Becca Balint, First Jewish Congressmember to Back Ceasefire, Expresses Support for Rashida Tlaib   Dozens of members of Congress are now calling for a ceasefire or cessation of hostilities in Israel and occupied Palestine. We speak to Democratic Congressmember Becca Balint of Vermont, the first Jewish member of Congress to join these calls. “The horrific violence has to stop. Hostages must be released. We have to end the suffering in Gaza. Palestinians and Israelis both deserve safety and security. And now more than ever, I believe that we need a true, negotiated ceasefire to get to a two-state solution,” Balint says of her position. We also discuss her friendship with fellow Democratic congressmember and the only Palestinian American in Congress, Rashida Tlaib. https://www.democracynow.org/2023/11/21/becca_balint_gaza_israel_ceasefire

2023-11-15 Defending and Respecting Rashida Tlaib’s Standpoint Does Not Mean Abandoning My Own      Rashida Tlaib has been long been demonized and denounced for her general outspokenness and her strong and unyielding defense of Palestinian rights and Palestinian resistance to Israeli occupation. In the weeks since Hamas’ vicious October 7 attacks, the vitriol leveled against her has increased exponentially.

I consider the attacks on her nasty, intellectually unserious, and contrary to a basic principle of pluralist democracy—the principle that fellow citizens with whom one disagrees are not thereby existential enemies to be attacked and defeated. I also think that the refusal to listen to Tlaib, and understand where she is coming from, is an awful way to respond to the ongoing crisis in Israel-Palestine, by blinding U.S. foreign policy to Palestinian perspectives and deafening U.S. political leaders and citizens to the criminal death and destruction now being rained down on Gaza by the Israeli military, even as Hamas continues its dangerous but much less deadly rocket attacks and continues to hold over 200 innocent civilians hostage in the manner of a terroristic pirate gang.

For these reasons I have defended Rashida Tlaib in three recently published pieces, insisting that censuring her means censuring democracy and seeking to silence the U.S. Congress’s only Palestinian voice, and also insisting that it is essential more generally to distinguish between pro-Palestinian activism and antisemitism, and to stop demonizing the former.https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/defending-rashida-tlaib

2023-11-10 Congress’ Censure of Rep Tlaib Shows There’s a ‘Palestine Exception’ to Free Speech       “I find it horrific that the politicians have the nerve to censure righteous voices for peace and for the lives of Gazans, who are being murdered,” Holocaust survivor Marione Ingram said.

In the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, the nation’s founding documents are on display, including the Bill of Rights, which enshrines free speech. As Israel subjects Gaza to a massive air and ground assault, Congress has reminded us of what has come to be known as “the Palestine exception” to free speech.

On Tuesday, 22 Democrats joined with the Republican majority to censure Palestinian-American Congressmember Rashida Tlaib. Just before the rare vote, Tlaib addressed the House, surrounded by her progressive colleagues including the two other Muslims in Congress, André Carson and Ilhan Omar–herself the only African refugee in Congress, their fellow African American Congressmembers Ayanna Pressley, Summer Lee, Jamal Bowman, and Cori Bush, along with the chair of the Progressive Caucus, Pramila Jayapal.

“I’m the only Palestinian American serving in Congress, Mr. Chair, and my perspective is needed here now more than ever. I will not be silent, and I will not let you distort my words,” Tlaib said. “Trying to bully or censor me won’t work, because this movement for a cease-fire is much bigger than one person. It’s growing every single day. There are millions of people across our country who oppose [Israeli Prime Minister] Netanyahu’s extremism…They are done watching our government, Mr. Chair, supporting cutting off food, water, electricity, and medical care to millions of people with nowhere to go. Like me, Mr. Chair, they don’t believe the answer to war crimes is more war crimes.”https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/tlaib-palestine-free-speech

2023-11-07 ‘Palestinian People Are Not Disposable,’ Says Rashida Tlaib During House Censure Debate     “Speaking up to save lives—no matter faith, no matter ethnicity—should not be controversial in this chamber. The cries of the Palestinian and Israeli children sound no different to me.” “I’m the only Palestinian American serving in Congress… and my perspective is needed here now more than ever,” Tlaib asserted. “I will not be silenced and I will not let you distort my words.”   “Folks forget I’m from Detroit, the most beautiful, blackest city in the country where I learned how to speak truth to power even if my voice shakes,” she added. “Trying to bully or censor me won’t work because this movement for a cease-fire is much bigger than one person. It’s growing every single day.”

U.S. House lawmakers voted Tuesday night to censure Tlaib. The vote was 234-188, with 22 Democrats joining almost all Republicans in approving the resolution. Four GOP lawmakers voted against the measure.

Many Republicans and Democrats have accused Tlaib of antisemitism, especially for calling Israel’s war on Gaza a “genocide”—an assessment with which many experts concur—and for using the phrase, “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.”     Tlaib has explained that, to her, the phrase—which is also a core component of the original platform of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud party—”is an aspirational call for freedom, human rights, and peaceful coexistence, not death, destruction, or hate.”   https://www.commondreams.org/news/censure-rashida-tlaib-2666179441

2023-10-26 Tlaib Denounces MTG Resolution Against Her as ‘Deeply Islamophobic’    Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib hit back at Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene on Thursday after the Georgia Republican introduced an “unhinged” resolution to censure the Michigan Democrat—and only Palestinian American in Congress—for participating in a recent peaceful Capitol sit-in supporting a Gaza cease-fire.

Greene’s privileged resolution—which requires House consideration within two legislative days—seeks to censure Tlaib “for antisemitic activity, sympathizing with terrorist organizations, and leading an insurrection at the United States Capitol” on October 18.   That day, thousands of Jewish protesters and allies rallied in and outside the Capitol to demand members of Congress push for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza, where Israeli forces have killed nearly 7,000 Palestinians, wounded over 17,000 more, destroyed or damaged nearly half of all homes, and displaced more than 1.4 million people.

Tlaib, who was one of the speakers at the rally outside the Capitol, said in a statement that Greene’s “unhinged resolution is deeply Islamophobic and attacks peaceful Jewish anti-war advocates.”     https://www.commondreams.org/news/censure-rashida-tlaib

2023-10-26 Appeal from Rashida   As the only Palestinian American member of Congress, Rashida’s voice and lived experience are more critical now than ever. But in response to her leadership in calling for a ceasefire and an end to the genocide unfolding against millions of people trapped in Gaza, Rashida has been under relentless attack.  In some of their first business since electing a new Speaker of the House, Republicans introduced a resolution to censure Rashida, with even some Democrats joining these right-wing Islamophobic attacks:

Newsweek    Headline: Marjorie Taylor Greene Gets Democrat Support to Punish Rashida Tlaib

Marjorie Taylor Green’s unhinged resolution is full of dangerous lies and distortions. It isn’t just Islamlophobic and bigoted, it also attacks non-violent Jewish anti-war activists.

Last week, Rashida spoke at a rally in Washington DC organized by Jewish Voice for Peace and IfNotNow, and an interfaith prayer vigil and rally to hold the political establishment accountable for continuing the drumbeat of war that will lead to more lives lost, especially children in Palestine.   From Rashida E-mail

At the rally, Rashida reminded us that we must not lose our shared humanity. The cries of the mother in Gaza who lost all of her children in the unrelenting bombing by the Israeli government are the same cries of a father who listened to his daughter being attacked by Hamas not knowing if she is alive.

Rashida’s voice is needed. Will you donate today to have Rashida’s back as she demands a ceasefire and works to protect everyone in the region, no matter their faith or ethnicity?

If the United States government and the world do not speak out now, more lives will be lost. The collective punishment of people in Gaza has been relentless, with whole neighborhoods destroyed, and generations of families wiped out. And the Israeli military is saying that they are just getting started.

Our movement demanding the human rights of Palestinians―and of all people―is growing. Americans are rising up, saying we will not be complicit in the genocide of Palestinians.

2023-10-26 Rashida Tlaib’s alleged links to the Hamas terror organization – report   Palestinian-American Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib has been an outspoken supporter of the Palestinian cause. However, her alleged connections to the Hamas terrorist group have only recently been uncovered, according to the Canary Mission.  [MEK Note: Canary Mission is pro-Israel that collects information on Groups and Individuals that are antisemitic (anti-Israel‘s genocide, occupation and oppression) to smear and intimidate. Using their own logic, their organization has connections to the terrorist Israel government and other pro-Israel groups]

In an article it published on October 25, the mission, a group dedicated to fighting antisemitism in the United States, claims that Tlaib has extensive funds tied to the Hamas terrorist group.

“Universities are filled with anti-Israel professors and antisemitic campus groups such as Students for Justice in Palestine. The streets are filled with highly organized extremist groups that support Hamas. It is being tolerated. If we want this to stop, we have to be intolerant to intolerance.”

“Congresswoman Tlaib failed to condemn the murder, rape, and beheading of 1,400 Jews and the kidnapping of 222 others. She has significant ties to Hamas-linked extremists. Her hatred of Israel and Jews should have no place in Congress.”   https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/rashida-tlaib-s-alleged-links-to-the-hamas-terror-organization-report/ar-AA1iQYqJ?

2023-10-10 Israel’s apartheid caused Hamas massacre, kidnapping, says US Rep. Tlaib     Israel’s Ambassador to the United States Michael Herzog condemned the statement. Herzog attached a photo of Tlaib’s comments, which read: “I grieve the Palestinian and Israeli lives lost yesterday, today and everyday. I am determined as ever to fight for a just future where everyone can live in peace, without fear and with true freedom, equal rights and human dignity.

“The path to that future must include lifting the blockade, ending the occupation and dismantling the apartheid system that creates the suffocating, dehumanizing conditions that can lead to resistance.  https://www.jpost.com/international/article-767383
