2022-09-16 Children’s Health Defense California STRONGLY Opposes this New LACDPH Mask Mandate (e-mail)
It’s time to tell Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) and mask-loving Barbara Ferrer that enough is enough – no more mask mandates! We do NOT want this mandate spreading across the state.
NEW LA County-only mandate requires that asymptomatic K-12 students mask up for ten days following “close contact” with an individual who tests positive for COVID-19. LACPH Order
This goes against California State Guidelines!
On September 6, 2022, 24 brave superintendents from school districts within LA County, representing over 100,000 impacted students, sent a letter to LACDPH’s Barbara Ferrer asking her to revise her LA County mask mandate which goes against state mandates.
Barbara Ferrer responded by telling these 24 superintendents that they were in the minority. Obviously she doesn’t care.
Children’s Health Defense California STRONGLY opposes this new LACDPH mandate for the following reasons:
Masks are Disruptive to Learning: Forcing students to “mask up” whenever another individual tests positive for COVID-19 has already and will continue to result in substantial disruption to students’ learning. Students will –and already are – being subjected to back-to-back masking requirements, resulting in all day masking for weeks at a time.
Masks are not harmless. Hundreds of studies and real-world empirical data have now shown significant harms to students’ physical, mental, educational, and social well-being. Focusing on this one “health measure” while ignoring all of the actual, admitted, and recognized harms is negligent and reckless.
Masks are not effective: Numerous studies have shown that there is no difference in covid transmission or infection rates between schools that required masking and schools that did not. In fact, some studies show that the schools without masking did better in every single measurable metric of “health.” Click here to read mask studies.
Masks Violate Students’ Constitutional Rights: Masks cannot become the “norm” for access to in-person learning in Los Angeles County. Public education is a Constitutional Right in California, and Ferrer is depriving LA County students of equal protection under the law.
Masks are Cruel: Forcing unwilling schoolchildren to endure blocking their airways for 6-8 hours a day, five days a week for years on end is cruel and shamefully detached from the professed concern over their health. Other schools across the country, and indeed around the world, have long rejected or abandoned this dubious measure. It appears this never-ending punishment is imposed for some unknown and unarticulated purpose or goal.
